I have adequate filtration, medium light on a timer, nitrates never go above 20ppm, 30%WC weekly, and yet I still get BBA ? The worst is that they are on plants that took 6-12 months to spread

Great information MJ. Please do green air algae that won't come off with toothbrush or anything else. Then the algae that grows on my annubis and also won't rub off

I had a huge problem with BBA, regular water changes ( once a week ) cutting back on feeding and reduced lighting. Its a long process but Perserverance works. Seachem helped in reducing algae but upset my Coolie loaches no end so stopped using it. Thanks MJ for your advice and tips.

You did one on GSA quite a while back, so likely no new revelations. Watched it, but still dealing with GSA in my 120-gallon going on 2 years. Prune and scrape , and back in a week. Every combination of light spectrum/intensity and many different fertilizers (w/ PO4), from lean to heavy, has done nothing to remedy. RO-DI water changes (50-70%) weekly without fail (remin with the Seachem lineup). Running CO2 as well. I think it’s just mocking me for sport at this point. Or these twin 59W Fluval 3.0 plant lights are partly to blame. Never had algae until I switched to LED.

Baby oil has been known to work as well. The viscosity will be different between water, baby oil, and glycerin. Just make sure you are checking your CO2 checker and adjusting the flow for whatever you are using.

My river aquarium only issue I have is the black colored algae goes crazy on the River rock and gravel, every surface of rock that faces the light will have it. What can I do to fix it and what am I doing to create it? I added some live plants to help with the nutrient load they need time to grow though lights are on for 10 hours or more but I still get it even with 6 hours of light
@forrealfifavids714420 күн бұрын
Could it be as simple as my light is too close to the water?
@BRSfresh19 күн бұрын
It could be that - lighting is a good place to start when kicking off an algae investigation. Are you running CO2? CO2 fluctuations can definitely cause algae to form (especially Black Beard). Cut back on ferts if you're using them, drop your light to 4-6hrs, or if you keep it 6-8, take the intensity down. You can try raising the light up as well. Clean the surfaces as best you can, do a water change and then adjust the lighting. Algae is forms when CO2, lighting and nutrients are out of balance. It may take some testing and trying to find what works best for your set up.

Do you still add plant fertiliser to your tanks alongside the co2? I'm just in the process of learning about it and want to add a co2 kit and was hoping to cut bk on all the chemical fertilisers in my tank
@BRSfresh20 күн бұрын
May depend a bit on your set up - but while the combo of CO2 and ferts will likely result in the best plant growth, if your goal is to cut back on ferts go ahead and just use CO2. We have multiple setups with only CO2, no ferts, and they are doing great. That said, when your planted substrate deteriorates (maybe after a year) ferts may be a needed supplement for your root feeders if you’re not otherwise using root tabs or changing the substrate.

If glycerin or mineral spirits were to get to your diffuser, you would need to replace it. But that is unlikely to happen (at least in our experience)

Is 5.8PH okay? I have the seachem alert and I added some carbonate hardness from a lizard supplement that just has calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate in it when I realized it was that low in my second betta tank after moving the PH alert to that tank and it’s slowly getting more PH but it’s still less than 6.5PH because the powder doesn’t dissolve very quickly it is more stable and long release of KH, but I have trouble keeping much KH for very long in my water even with that and the PH is usually pretty acidic in my tanks even though the tap water is around 8PH because I have some driftwood and leafs along with rocks and plants and ceramic hides covered in nice pretty green algae. Unfortunately the seachem alert tags are pretty sharp thin plastic edges even though they are really helpful for a quick check and monitoring to make sure everything is still going well but they have injured both of my bettas since I took the alert out of one tank and put it in the other to see the difference between them and I know it was the alert tag that caused the injuries because I noticed they happened right soon after adding them on water change day and I hadn’t had any problems with injuries before that so I need to find a better way to put the alert tags in the tank so the edges are covered in a safe way because hanging them on the included suction cups let them flap about a bit too much and then the fish can brush against the edges and cut parts of their fins or scales off if they get spooked by me being clumsy and dropping something during water change day and that’s not good, I put some seachem stress guard in the tank when I noticed the injuries to keep them from getting infected and help to heal but I wish they had not been sharp at all so that wasn’t necessary.
@BRSfresh27 күн бұрын
5.8 is pretty low. Would be a good idea to get to 7-8. Some non-inert rocks with calcium should help. If increasing KH isn’t doing enough, you can try oxygenating the water (surface agitation or bubbler) to decrease the CO2 content which increases pH. Or you can try proper pH from API to bring it up (amongst others).
