I have had knee osteoarthritis since 2006. I had physiotherapy to get the swelling down. My orthopaedic doctor advised exercises to strengthen all the muscles that support the knees. I do them daily and have been pain free. I even go trekking in the mountains. I am 75 years old.

My right knee was stage 4 arthritis I built my quad muscles up with a knee extension machine and started walking lost weight and took cod liver oil pills and I'm walking normal again knee will never be 100% but hey I'm take 85% anyday

Are you referring to the knee extension machine in the gym where you sit and push your leg below the knew upward?

Best thing for my knee was your recommendation to straighten my leg to loosen the knee cap, the massaging the heck out of it. It felt amazingly better the next day, but took a few weeks of doing it to maintain the better feel. But now I only have to massage it every now and then and usually only if I do something more strenuous than normal. I know the causes are different for everyone, but it's been amazing to me that this fixed mine so easily. Thanks again!

My ortho told me (after two scopes) that this was just my life since I was 40 years old and 100 pounds over weight. I left really mad and insulted and then when I lost 80 pounds three years later and my knees felt great I knew he was right. It’s hard to hear for sure. I heard every pound of weight is four pounds of pressure on your knees.

Weight is a huge factor. My doctor explained it to me calculating my weight with the pounds of pressure on my knees. It made sense to me.

I have slowly lost weight (in my 60s). I highly recommend using the Circadium Rhythm strategy explored by Dr. Panda (AFAR). Just the change in schedule made it so much easier to achieve results. Try it. It works (along, of course, with all the good advice for Bob & Brad !)

I developed daily stabbing pain in One knee (OA). I am 68 6-3, 185lbs (slim) A couple weeks went by and then my Walmart $60 one- size-fits-all D width Chinese boots fell apart. I just happened to have a pair of Redwing hightop hiking boots that i had paid $150 20yrs ago. My feet fit a size 12 and are a Narrow A. These USA made quality boots were not only 12 but also narrow A. A day after wearing these Redwings my knee pain dropped 90%! I never thought quality shoes could make such a difference but it has, thank God.😀 (No I have no affiliation to Redwing)

I had pain on my left knee due to bone spurs (osteoarthritis) so bad that the only thing that really helped was going to the pool for water therapy. It was the only way that I was able to get my knee moving without feeling severe pain. I did it for one month 3-4 times a week along with some stretching and strengthening exercises I did on my own. I found that it made a huge difference and was able to manage my pain. Now I am able to do the land exercises without pain. Before having done the water therapy, my body compensated for the knee pain and caused all sorts of imbalances creating more pain in other parts of my body such as my back. So I definitely think that water therapy is crucial initially.

What kind of exercises did you do in the pool?

I would do the same motion as riding the bike but in the water. I would swim across the pool on my front and then on my back. When I got tired I would just stay in one spot and keep my arms and legs moving. I also walked forwards and backwards in the pool. I would alternate doing these things for about 30 minutes and then go into hot tub and do some stretches while in the hot tub. Then I would go back into the pool and do the same thing for 30 minutes and then back to hot tub or sauna doing more stretching.

My brother-in-law had a minimally invasive surgery to have the bone spurs removed and the problem gone, i't's been >3 years by now still good, worthwhile a look into it

What worked for me: low carbs and walking on the front of my foot and not my heel - this was a huge change and took weeks of sore calves but it made for a massive improvement. It’s better shock absorption and less pressure on the knee.

@@AMM-ws5tz I think what they mean is to not walk where you're striking the ground with your heels first. A running book I read, which was a study of many individual studies, concluded that a flat foot or slightly toe forward "plant" was best. To achieve that they recommended that runners shorten their stride, so that is what I try to do when I go for walks. Mind you, I walked for years with my old heel first natural step without issue, but I guess age has a way of catching up with all of us. It is really hard to change the way you walk :(

Thank you. Feels like a bone spur in my arthritic knee. Was going to ask my doctor about surgery but after watching this I’ll focus on knee exercises, weight loss, and getting other shoes.

This is my first time listening to you both & I’m enjoying hearing all these things. I have osteoporosis throughout my body. I wear special footwear. I have lost 20 pounds & my A1C 6.5 finally came down… I would just like to get rid of the pain. Thank you for all the ideas

Diet change has worked for me, I have stopped eating nightshades, gluten, white rice and white pasta.....my pain disappeared!

I was told by my orthopedic Dr. that both knees were bone on bone. I decided to see if water aerobics would help. I’ve been doing it for 6 years, and I feel completely different. My balance has improved along with a stronger core. I also walk most days, with no pain. I would not consider a total knee replacement now, unless my joints deteriorated and surgery was the best option. The only activity that hurts is dancing and floor aerobics!

I had severe pain from oa in my right hip, and a bad limp. A rheumatologist wanted to send me for a hip replacement. Said I would definitely need one within 5 years. I told him that I had started taking glucosamine and wanted to see if it worked. Within a week, I was pain free in all normal activities, sitting, standing, walking. I could sprint to catch a bus with no pain. My limp was gone. This worked for 15 years, from 2000 to 2015. I then started to become active in sports again and my pain returned. The glucosamine was no longer effective, but I had a great run of 15 years. Then I got a hip resurfacing which preserves the hip bone. Not all brands of glucosamine are effective. A cheap $10 brand is unlikely to work. Glucosamine is a large molecule. To absorb it in the joint requires a special formulation. Not all products are well-absorbed. I used a number of different brands over this period of time. Some would work for a few years, then stop working. I switched a number of times. It's necessary to experiment.

I find that with the knee pain from osteoarthritis it is hard for me to walk very long but exercising in the water is much less painful. Also, I do stationary bike and don't feel pain while doing it but afterward can have knee pain walking. I am scheduled to have hylauronic acid injection and am hopeful it will help ease the pain and allow me to exercise more. I would like to hear you two discuss various types of knee injections.

Time after time over the years, doctors have insisted that I should use ice packs for chronic daily headaches and any kind of joint pain (back, hips, knees, etc.) but it takes my pain from miserable to practically unbearable. Only a heating pad helps!

From my experience, icing an area is relevant after a twist, strain or sprain, because it immediately attacks swelling resulting from the injury. Reducing swelling aids in healing. The following day, heat is the best application to the effected area.

@@abradfordajb Brad thanks you guys are great. But the mechanics of doing so don't make sense. The reason why swelling happens is to accommodate enough blood supply to do the repair. Swelling goes down as repair progresses. Suppressing swelling is working against the body.

I'd like to put a word in for Nordic Walking, i.e. walking with 2 poles which look a little like the ones Bob showed at the end, but I think those were Trekking Poles (sometimes called Hiking Poles). Poles designed for Nordic Walking have straps that bind closely to the hand with velcro (so you can actually let go of the pole and not lose it, and letting go of the pole on the backward movement is one of the advanced techniques taught). And the rubber pads which fit to the bottom of the pole are normally shaped such that when the pole is held about 45 degrees, the bottom of the pad (known as a "paw") is flat with the ground, providing maximum traction. The pads are removable, to expose a hard metal tip which can be useful in soft ground. Nordic Walking poles can help you to take some of the weight off your knees. The idea is that after you "plant" your pole in the ground, you exert a strong downward force with the hand (the force is transmitted to the pole via the special strap which is known as a "glove") which you continue as long as you can, and expert Nordic Walkers follow through with the hand as far back as they can, finally letting go of the pole (though it is still attached via the strap). As well as hopefully helping the knees somewhat, it provides a workout to the upper body, and also improves the all-important Posture. I love my Nordic trekking poles. I have bone on bone and it takes the weight off my knees plus it is way cooler than. Walking with a cane! Plus you get a great workout!

I have benefited from acupuncture, losing weight, swimming, heat and ice treatment, jacuzzi spa, resistance training,. and believing I can heal myself. Still playing basketball at age 59, just not so mush as I used to. I know it won't last forever, but hopefully, I will just keel over on the court someday, and die doing what I love.

I had a meniscus surgery for a tear and my knee has never been right since. Never. I also tore the meniscus in my other knee, did not have the surgery and today it is fine. Getting that surgery is the biggest mistake of my life.

A friend of mine had the same issue. Last month she had a stem cell injection- $5000.. she said it was life-changing. Pain is minimal and no limping.

I had meniscus surgery on my left knee in 2016, had PT twice & I agree, my knee hasn't been right since either; just constant pain. My rt knee is developing chronic pain as well for compensating. The saddest thing is I used to be very active before this, I'm a nurse who wears lead (radiology), I still try to workout, but the pain afterwards is horrendous.

I have osteoarthritis in both knees for the last seven years or so. I used to be about 285 pounds. I have gotten down to 230 pounds. That has helped tremendously. I did that .by cycling. I now do rides that are minimum 35 to 50 miles each time. It does NOT hurt my knees the least little bit on those rides. But if I walk a half a mile, my knees hurt. Getting orthoscopic surgery to clean out my knee did nothing. Aleve helps a little bit. Tramadol helps a little bit. I think I'm at the point where I can take the pain that I have. I'm going to try to lose more weight so I can put off knee replacement as long as I can. I just wish we were a lot further along with knee osteoarthritis treatments than we are. It just seems like everything is old technology and that nothing new is making any really good headway. But, thank God I can cycle to get exercise. Because I surely can't hike like I used to or walk long distances.

@@tenesantos I still ride my bike a lot. But I do need the replacement surgery for both knees. It's not killing me, but I'd rather get it now then wait till I'm older and not as in good shape. Hopefully within the next year I can get at least one of them done.

I loved water therapy! It really helped me with knees, back, and hips. Like others have mentioned you can rock it in the pool, but the return to reality when you go to get out is always an adventure. A blend of land based and water based workouts was a winner for me.

In the water, people can go harder, which if they overdo it could make it flare up... but water is more full body then isolated.

6 months later did you find something? And or do you know if knee braces work? I was once an active vibrant fitness fanatic, but after 12days on LEVOFLOXACIN antibiotics for sinus surgery, I am LITERALLY CRIPPLED :( My archilies was 1st to be a problem and finally started feeling better and now my knees are SO bad I cannot walk again.

@m c They dont only cause arthritis, they eat away the collegean in the body with is what tendons and ligs are made of. Thererore at certain ages its harder and takes longer for the body to make up what is lost. In the meantime, it is VERY easy to tear or rupture something just by everyday activities (walking fast, twisting, turning, lifting things ect) and even moreso for athletes (as I once was :( ) who are active. Google it. Im not a scientist, but I DO know I am living in a side effect nightmare.

@@luvfitall I know, I'm sorry, I was having a terrible night after several in a row and let the negativity get to me. I feel slightly better today. I've been on a ketogenic diet for the last 3 years or so and it's helped a lot, but it makes it more confusing when a flare up happens seemingly out of nowhere when I haven't changed anything.

The first two are malarkey, the rest I agree with. I have osteoarthritis in both knees. I play tennis 2-3 times a week, swim laps (500m-2000m) 4-6 times a week, lift weights 3 times a week, and try to walk 10,000 steps or more a day. I also stretch daily. I ice my knees after tennis, and some workouts, and it makes a huge difference. I take glucosamine daily. With the glucosamine, I don’t notice much until I stop taking it. I have quit taking it several times and within a day or two my knees are worse. I rarely take an NSAID. Ice in my opinion is the best anti inflammatory, and recovery agent out there. By the way I am a 65 year old male, 6’4”, a lean 225lbs and I have played sports my whole life. I am not a “scientist”, but I have a wealth of personal experience rehabbing, and preventing injuries.

I had a meniscus trim and 30 years later I'm beginning to have problems. Also, the combination of Capsaicin and a knee brace allows me to work a full day with practically no pain, as long as I don't sit with my knee bent for any length of time. Covering Capsaicin with the brace makes it burn more which some people cannot handle, but it does work if you can tolerate the initial burning sensation. I had no luck with the Hyaluronic Acid shots or the offloader knee brace.

@@rositameggs4559 I use a McDavid least expensive brace with adjustable straps that I got at Academy. The braces come in 4 sizes and they have paper measuring tapes. Also, I do the exercises to strengthen the leg muscles. Leg lifts and duck walking with power bands.

I have arthritis pain in my knee. A friend recommended copper infused kniesiology tape. My Knee is always wrapped with it! It works! I am a Zumba Instructor medium intensity) It works, I would not live without it! Linda Mendoza

I started doing water exercises 6 months ago. My pain has lessened and. I now have much greater range of motion in both knees. I attend classes at the local park district. The pool has a staircase to walk in and out of the water I could never use the ship ladder.

I have been afflicted with bilateral osteopathy of the knees for about ten years. The medication prescribed was the usual and I cannot confirm or deny that it has or has not improved or worsened the condition. The situation to begin with was such that I had much pain and movement limited to about half the normal. The clinic I visited treated me with twenty minutes of what they referred to as pulsed electromagnetic knee massage every day for fifteen days and stated that I would be pain free for about three months. It is now about ten years and I have never had the pain experienced before treatment or any other sort of pain. I have found that strict adherence to the hour long daily exercise routine is absolutely obligatory to maintain almost normal mobility. I have found that if the other exercises are for some reason cannot be performed, traction just cannot be, no matter what.

Thank you Shirley Stein for your comment and request for information about exercises for knee arthritis. There is nothing special about the exercises which are the usual that any physiotherapist would suggest. There are three groups into which the exercises fall. The first group involves bending movements to increase range of motion. There are some six such. In the supine position the lower leg is bent up towards the thigh as far as possible either using just the thigh muscles or forcing the lower leg to bend using a towel wrapped around the ankle and pulling on the towel. The second exercise involves large cycling moments of both the lower leg and thigh while supine movements both forward and reverse. The third exercise is raising the lower leg vertically so that both thigh and lower leg are vertical while supine. At start both the thigh and lower leg are bent so that it is only the lower leg that is raised to be inline with the thigh which is already vertical. The fourth exercise is slow exaggerated marching movement while standing in one place the knee being raised as high as possible.The fifth is a slow squat with the back pushed out back . This is done on to a high stool or bed and support taken by a chair back to prevent falling. The sixth is a wall squat done with the back sliding against a wall and the squat limited to a very shallow squat from which it is possible to stand up straight. The second set involves muscle strengthening exercises. These include supine leg raise to thirty degree up, lower leg raise from a seated position, standing lateral leg raise, standing backward leg raise, standing total body raise from heel to toe. The third set includes three very effective traction exercises. While seated on a high stool swing lower legs with ankle weighs to one seventh of body weight on each ankle.Reduce weight if discomfort felt. Stand next to a padded seat stool with lower leg placed o horizontally on it. Place rolled up towel in between thigh and lower leg close to back of knee. Bend forward pressing down on lower leg press down up to comfort level. The final traction exercise is done lying on floor. Place stretch cord around ankle and fix other end of cord to strong fixed bed leg or other very heavy furniture leg. Move body up so the leg is stretched.You will find many excellent videos on KZfaq illustrating all these and more , The exercises involving flexing of the knee and traction are very effective and yield quick results. Not relevant to your request, but I have found wheat, oats and other grain products to be bad and most decidedly sugar in all forms. Millets of any kind are the best and have absolutely no ill effects on arthritis. Alcohol is to be limited to a maximum of two pours per day of red wine and no hard drinks and of course no smoking. @@shirleystein6521 I am happy that you liked the information passed on to you. None of the exercises are of my making. These are the standard exercises that any physiotherapist would prescribe. If you should find that the regime is much too drawn out, you could limit your choices to just two of each type. Two of forward leg raises, two of total knee bends while supine, two of standing leg raises , three exaggerated cycling movements while supine and most important never to be missed three full knee traction exercises, If you still find the exercises to be too much then for all that is valued, do not ever miss the three knee traction exercises. Traction does provide immediate results, though these are of a temporary nature. If the three traction exercises are done with three repetitions each of 20 minutes duration per day for one month the results will last for about three to six months. I had very bad knees since I was in my 30's (inherited from my grandma and arthritis). In the early 1990's, my orthopedic surgeon determined I needed arthroscopic surgery. I had bone spurs, knees were hanging up, pain on the right side of the right knee (something was torn on that side). My doctor said it would take six weeks to recover. WRONG! It rook me MONTHS to recover, and I don' feel it did me much good at all. I've since read not to have that kind of surgery. I'm now 65 and my knees act up now and then, but I take collegen, MSM, and other quality supplements, plus exercises to keep my various leg, hip, ankle muscles strong, and my knees seem better than when I was in my 30's. I haven't had any kind of knee injections or any more surgery, and I'd like to keep it that way!

Had arthroscopic surgery in both knees. Had to use crutches before surgery but the surgery was an absolute success. Still walking great and very little pain.

I have been taking glucosomane/chondroitin for about 17 years. A friend recommed itsince it was the first reliefshe had ever gotten from severe back pain. I ignored her suggestion, so later she gave me a 30 day jar. After I used up that jar I did not buy another, but after 2 weeks the pain returned, so I was convinced. About a year later I added MSM upon the advice of 2 other friends. It was clear that also added to the relief. The research I have read about appears to be limited by their methods: limited time frame, limited pain range, low dose, not going month on/month off, generally no study of those who do claim relief - usually calling that a placebo effect, rather than taking a look at why it works for some people and not for others. My hypothesis: it works for some people and not others for reasons yet to be understood.

MSM has also helped me with herniated disks and the insane pain from inflammation. I took powerful pain killers for months to even function at all, but MSM stopped the pain in 2 weeks.

I have severe arthritis in my right knee. I walk all the time but the pain is almost unbearable. Fortunately I have a local indoor pool at my disposal. They teach a 45 minute deep water aerobics class. I can be in severe pain and barely able to walk, before the class but after I am able to go up and down stairs without pain. I would love to be able to do tai chi but I have spinal stinosis and bulging disks pressing on nerves and I lose feeling in my feet so I get stumbly and my lower back starts to spasm when I stand too long. So land exercises are out for me. I love the water anyway so will continue with the water aerobics.

I had a very bad knee pain I started doing self massage with very hard hands and also started Massaging with rolling pin on my legs and arms Every day and it really worked now I have no pain and also walk almost 25 to half an hour everyday believe me it’s going to work

@@akperheogheneovo4954 some pain is associated with auto-immune issues that are aggravated by poor diet like high sugar. i don’t fall in this category so i stopped pursuing it, but if you are interested in this sort of information i would look into mikhaila peterson’s story

Great stuff as always chaps. I had micro fracturing on my knee back in 2018 - 5 years ago when I was 52 on 2 small areas. Was pain free within 3 months after surgery. As long as you stay on the crutches for the recommended time I swear by the surgery. I was warned at my age that there was the potential for the arthritis returning and sure enough this week it feels like I am getting the arthritis back. Thoughts on micro-fracturing?

Japanese acupuncture helped my arthritis fibromyalgia and chronic migraines so much!!! I saw a retired ER Doc with 30 years of experience. He had taken additional training at Harvard on Japanese acupuncture. I think the combination of both his experience as a physician and additional training plus he did three treatments instead of one each time I saw him. I was in bed all the time and could started working part time after seeing him. He did retire for good after about 4 years though and every time it's going to rain I sure wish I could see him! Acupuncture really works for arthritis. Both of my parents started going to him just for arthritis in their knees. I've actually had Chinese treatments (before the Japanese) and they both helped.

I've been watching these guys and another Dr. I started dieting just a few days ago and I have more energy. Still have joint pain but I can tell it's improving. Trying to lose 130 lbs or more. I would still be overweight but I don't have to carry a whole extra person 24/7.

I had a radial meniscus tear in my knee. After that, every couple weeks, some floating part in the meniscus would lodge a certain way and it was like a lightning bolt of pain would happen again in my knee. I did not want surgery, but the possibility of that happening while driving scared me too much. I had the orthoscopic surgery and it cleared it out, have not had one incident since and that was 20 years ago. You guys are great, but I disagree with that study from my own experience/situation.

Hi Bob and Brad, I'm 49 and have been dealing with right knee pain since I was 16 and thrown from a horse and landed wrong. Well I complained for years to my family doctor and she thought I was exaggerating the pain. Well 1day when I was 45 yrs old my knee finally swelled, and then took me seriously. She sent me to a orthopedic doctor and did an MRI on it with x-rays, and had it scoped, they did a latteral release with my knee cap cause it was almost worn into 2 pieces. And they cleaned up the damaged cartilage and bone spurs. I started physical therapy immediately, well at some point hurt it again. And for a year complained to the physician assistant about the pain I was in and couldn't understand why it wasn't better. Well after a year of shots in my knee. I noticed my knee made a kluncking feel when I moved it from side to side, they did another scope and my mydiscus muscle had torn and went in-between the bones in my knee. It had completely worn off the cartilage in my knee and now I have to have a knee replacement. The physician assistant lost her job over it for not listening to me the patient. So I have to wear a knee brace until my surgery date.

Right??!! The placebo effect occurs when someone uses or does something that has not really been shown to improve that specific thing, and the body heals anyway! It's not just that someone "thinks" they feel better. Objective testing can show that they really are better! The placebo effect is awesome!!

I had my left knee drained and injected with cortisone nine times in one year. Then I had an arthroscopy and I haven’t had swelling in two years. Now my right knee has started to swell, so I hope I can get surgery on that knee as well. Highly recommend it.

Re K tape: there is often a benefit from the amplified proprioception which can correct bad form and therefore change the use of a joint or the pronation etc. There is also a benefit in the compression given in that area. So I wouldn’t rule it out completely. IMHO

I have been suffering for 14 months without relief of the pain in my right hip, bursar, and knee & ankle. Dr want to operate. I decided to go to Goodwill. There I found a cane, crutches, walker, stretch bands, pedaler , ankle weight...not recommended unless you can wear it above the knee or at the hip. Best thing I found was a ThighMaster set. Everything in. excellent condition. Total under $100. So far the Thigh Master is great. I overdid at first but am now improving. I will donate canes, crutches and most everything but the walker , cane.... & ThighMaster, back to GW. Thanks to Bob and Brad, I ditched the dr.

I've been doing the GLA:d program for knee artritis...it's a program developed in Denmark which focuses on strengthening the muscles etc that support the knees and hips, mostly using resistance bands, steps, and core strengthening....I'm not sure it's available in the US yet, just Denmark, Canada and Australia...it's 2 one hour classes a week for 6 weeks and I've seen significant improvement over that time...a lot less pain, and more movement in my knee...

@@pegdunn9236 I actually just started doing a repeat of the course...my knees are still better than they were when I started the course last year, but starting to deteriorate again, so I thought the course would help... The thing I noticed most was that my balance is so much better than it was when I started the course last year, and I'm able to do the movements much easier, so the physiotherapist started increasing the difficulty on my second week, where last year I was a month or so in before they started to increase things...I do highly recommend the course, it's not cheap, but it's worth it..

I had the meniscus surgery in 1979, thereafter mostly walked ok with an ace bandage on my right knee. In 1915, my knee gave way climbing just a few stairs, and became dependent on crutches and a wheelchair that I still use just to move around in one room of my house. I found loss of weight and indoor bicycling the best exercise to strengthen the muscles around my knee.

There's one general practitioner that I'd listen to and that's my current one. I nearly ended up in a wheelchair thanks to a general practitioners incompetence, sorry but I'd take this research with a pinch of salt. If the natural and alternative methods work, keep doing them! It's your body and you know it better than anyone

I on the other hand am trying to get a wheelchair so I'm not stranded at home due to pain, instability, etc and can't get one. This after a major injury and arthritis and PT and being told I can't be prescribed meds strong enough to fix the pain. So I've been at home most of 2 months. The 2 helpful things are tape and injections but I still can't go out without a wheelchair

I’ve had two total knee replacements in the last 4 months. There was just about nothing left of my cartilage. I did 12 weeks of PT, and finally said there was nothing else they/I could do. I feel great, even after 4 months.

My left knee has given me arthritic pain for years, particularly when cold or wet weather comes. Some days it is so bad I can hardly walk or climb stairs. I treated it gently for years, but that didn't help...as a matter of fact my knee just got weaker. Then I figured I might as well hit the gym and do leg weights and lo and behold, it really helps! I legs are overall much stronger, my knee hurts less and flares up less dramatically. I never wanted to go the surgery route...I'd rather use a cane, if I it got that bad. Dropping about 10lbs/4.5kg also made a big difference.

I have bone on bone on both knees I’ve been doing exercise and I’ve been riding a bike five days a week for 40 minutes the knees don’t seem to be doing any better I noticed my balance is off also I really don’t want to go for a knee replacement I would have to do them in both knees 83 years old and I really don’t want to go and have them done what could I do to make them stronger

For some people Glucosamine can cause an increase in blood pressure. I took Glucosamine for few days and started to have heart palpitations, on checking my blood pressure I was shocked to find it had risen substantially above my normal levels. Whilst this is very rare it is something to consider when taking the supplement, especially if there is no real evidence to prove that it is effective. Thanks for your channel I find your post extremely helpful for all sorts of health issues. .

I live is SA and am 93. Had a left knee replacement in 2007 which is still walking well now the right knee is painful when walking. If I use a walker it is manageable but still painful. I am not overweight. What about the Hylalutonic acid injection ?

I too have a right knee that is on schedule to be replaced. I was told non weight bearing exercises is best. What is your opinion of cycling as an exercise before and after surgery? I'm an avid road cyclist so my weight is not an issue. I tend to be not in pain when I ride. The pain is always there when I walk. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge! You guys are awesome! Have you guys researched diet as a form of treatment for knee pain as well? I’ve suffered from knee pain and had a laparoscopy surgery on one of my knees and thankfully doing well but my other knee is hurting a lot now. Since I’m on a plant based diet now, my pain has improved drastically. I’ve omitted dairy since it causes inflammation and my pain has gone away since I’ve switched to this diet. I highly recommend it!

My knees are so bad, I cry most of the day, can’t sleep and nothing helps. I’m morbidly obese but part of the reason I’m obese is because my knees got worse and worse and I walked less and less because I couldn’t without severe pain. My obesity didn’t cause my knee pain, my knee pain caused my obesity.

I had the scope surgery at the age of 31; about 10 months later ( after I had my baby) pain started all over again! As If I never had the scope done. At the age of 34, I was told I have severe arthritis and should consider a knee replacement. I'm only 36 now; I'm young! It now locks up, gives out and throbs like crazy. I'm seeing my Dr next week to discuss options. I can relate to this video....I've tried all of this and more. I'm only 36, I should not have to consider a knee replacement! Walking helps some as well as the brace.

I understand totally after being injured at work. I had to have a meniscectomy after having a bed slammed into my knee. I suffer still with the exact knee issues as well. I was told a knee replacement would most likely be my last option. I use a wheelchair to get around at work mostly because of the pain. It’s upsetting not being able to walk more than 5 minutes before the pain really starts. Tired of taking pain meds. Praying for healing for us all. 🙏

That's no joke about hand pain from using assistance devices. I had to use a walker (could never get the hang of crutches!) and be non weight-bearing for six weeks after microfracture surgery on my left knee TWO YEARS ago and my right palm of my hand STILL hurts. Do you guys know of anything that can be done or that I can do to fix that?

I disagree that water fitness doesnt work bcus i had severe pain and i started a water therapy program and when i got better i started water jogging water walking water fitness and i feel great. I got 80% of my strength back and im able to do more things then ever b4.

I wish I knew this long ago. Torn meniscus at 15, arthroscopic surgery at 35 (I held out!), and pretty significant arthritis at 52.

Even if you had never had any surgery, you would have developed arthritis as well. And I think it even seems that in your case, arthritis took longer to develop. By the way, how did you tear your meniscus?

I’ve got to go back and see who did this study…haven’t finished watching this yet, but so far half the things they recommended have been helpful to me - I watched what glucosamine did for my old arthritic cat and started taking it….and I can tell when I don’t take it…topical aspercreme helps me, as does ice sometimes, as did meniscal surgery (in fairness, a flap of my meniscus was stuck in my joint) I also get synvisc injections, exercise (walking) and take a daily supplement with hyaluronic acid, collagen and boron…Vitamin K2 helps calcium go into bones and not arteries…when my knee is really sore, I put two salon pas patches on in in a “V” shape and wear my copperfit sleeve….every lb you lose takes 4 lbs of pressure off the knees…..

@@alansenzaki4148 they actually do recommend this in the guidelines, so keep it up, there is some evidence it works in the trials, not that that that matters in your case as anecdotally you already know it works.

It actually hurts mine a lot. I’ve tried multiple bikes. Walking is fine however, it’s skiing that bugs mine and stairs

I had a locking knee, the surgeon went in cleaned it up and I have forgotten about the pain and locking. Its still good 10 years later.

@@tonywalker1954 50 years young. The best thing for my knees I have every done is work on a once a day bridging exercise(20 kg weight) 5 days a week with a black band around my knees to work all the booty muscles.

Funny thing for me was, after losing 35 lbs, my knees actually got worse. I do think I lost muscle mass though & need to strengthen my quadriceps to give my knees better support & strength.

Me too! I lost 50# which was great, but I noticed I lost A LOT of muscle- especially in my quads. I don't have pain, just joint stiffness... sometimes my knees turn to stone. I take Ibuprofen daily. Trying out collagen peptides and light exercise to rebuild the muscles.

@@HA-dn4ez Okay, so I found out my THYROID level was very abnormal (June)...I have Hashimoto's Disease. My Endocrinologist put me on Levothyroxine and within 3d, I was able to walk without a limp. Though my gait is much improved, and I'm able to do short workouts daily, my leg/hip muscles still get fatigued. My eyesight even improved slightly! I lost weight by going vegan.

Ok I thought I was going nuts. I recently lost 10 pounds, I know it's not much, but I know it's still alot to help with knee joints and I swear I've noticed more pain than before. I know it doesn't help that I basically sit all day at a desk job but still. I've been looking for days for something to help

I have recently discovered kineseo tape and I couldn't be happier. I have had one knee replaced and it was doing well until a physical therapist insisted on doing a thing I told her not to do because she was hurting me. I couldn't walk the next day and it took me a month to get back to where I had been. There is still a very sore area on the side of my knee and it is always painful but does not keep me from walking. My other knee is a hot mess. Totally bone on bone and ready to collapse. I have back of knee pain with that one that is horrendous. There are days when I simply can't walk. I am not in a life place where I can get the knee replacement now. So I suffer. Then, there was tape. I followed the instructions from online classes and learned how to tape for both conditions. The relief was immediate for both knees. Don't get me wrong; they still hurt but not nearly as much. I cried. I'm pretty sure this is not a placebo effect as it works as I sleep as well. I have not woken up screaming in the night as I had been for nearly two years. The experts can say what they want, but this stuff is a miracle.

Agreed about the tape. Same goes for plantar fasciitis. I'm able to walk without bracing myself for the pain due to KT tape.

UK NHS, I went through all the phisio, injection, route with a knee meniscus tear. Ended up with surgery but, with degenerative arthritis in the knee, it stopped catching but was still painful and unusable. Now booked in for total knee replacement surgery. Hoping for an end to all the pain and get walking again.

I had arthroscopic surgery and they are right. Wound up with a knee replacement. Much better. Looking at one for other knee also.

I only did yoga and jump rope. I dont know what I did other than these. Whenever I squat now my knees make super crunchy noise, there is no pain. But this sound has made me with draw from exercising.

Would have also liked to hear the "why" behind these recommendations (for or against.) Like why dis acupuncture? Did it just not work? Did it cause additional knee problems? Was it considered too expensive for the results one gets? Is it too difficult to find a good practitioner? Also, eliminating inflammatory foods should be the very first step in trying to alleviate any joint pain!

Aussie here. I was told to use glucosamine and chondroitin and I did for ages. It was useless and cost so much money. I was in so much pain but eventually had knee replacements. I wish I was born when stem cell or other recushioning will be available.

I had meniscus repair and cartilage regeneration 15 years ago. 3 months NWB. It started hurting again 3 months ago. For fifteen years I had no pain. I am an RN and worked hard for several years.

Hmm. I hope the rec against acupuncture was either conditional or based on cost, because I’ve had really good results treating patients with knee arthritis pain in my clinic. (I’m an acupuncturist.) It’s not always a permanent fix but for a lot of people it’s the only thing that’s worked, including PT and surgeries. (Though for many of my patients I recommend going to PT to strengthen around the knee to complement my treatment.) I wonder what outcomes they were looking at in the acupuncture studies. Because I don’t know that there would be much structural change, and possibly the arthritic bone changes would still be there, but there is definitely (in most cases) good pain control, improved mobility and improved quality of life.

Shoving those trocars into the joint after the incision when doing a knee arthroscopy, made me decide a long time ago that I would never get one. I am a Surgical Tech of 25 years and I have assisted in many, many knee scopes, and I agree that unless there's locking or a foreign object, I will avoid knee arthroscopies like the plague.

I can agree 100% on #3 (arthroscopic surgery). I have OA in both knees where I basically have no meniscus left. both knees have had arthroscopic surgery to clean up the meniscus, with my left knee having it twice. always back to square one.

Iam asking because my right leg started cracking and creaking really bad since last week, just happened out of no were...i have no pain at all... the cracking sound lead me to 2 different doctors. One told me its OA of the knee and the otber one told me if theres no pain forget about it . Iam still concerned

So I had arthroscopic for torn meniscus in June, today the inside knee joint has been excruciating pain for the past week. I’ve, Voltaren, Motrin, Icy Hot, nothing works. I’ve already finished PT and all was good, started doing stairs at the gym and taking walks couple times a week and now I want to cry. Going to try KT tape, maybe some heat first. I have a follow up this week with ortho surgeon, I hope I can get some answers. All of this started in April when I twisted my knee in a divot walking through a park…I need a better story.

Of course there can be exceptions. Also maybe the exception has to do with a secondary issue, some mal-tracking or other underlying health condition. So the tape or glucosamine might help certain people. Plus "biochemical individuality" of course. As to land therapy vs water- land has the full weight, heavier gravity helps build muscle. Plus when you actually do walk it is on land. Also gravity plus muscle development may help bone mass? Maybe a factor in there somewhere?

I had arthroscopic cleanup on my knee in 1998. It was great. I’ve not had any other surgery on it since. My other knee was bothering me and I finally got a steroid shot and that has worked for the past two years. Guess I’m lucky at 71. Now…my spine is an entirely diff story.

I wonder why injections were not covered? Or are those primarily for injuries? I have mild arthritis along with both meniscus torn horizontally. The pain was through the roof until the cortisone shot. Now I can walk and strengthen with weight bearing exercise... until the shot wears off!

Hi. the key words are BEE VENOM THERAPY. Place two bee stingers just above knee cap and wait one week to do two bee stingers below knee cap. Do avoid the cap entirely -- injections can be just behind cap and leave stinger in place for 20 minutes before flipping it out with index finger nail's under edge. This process can be done for serval months, and the end result is often walking normally soon after. Enjoy.

Just a thought. Maybe the reason that study suggested against water exercise was due to the amount of weight put on the knees when exiting the pool. I myself am a big lady and I lover exercising in the pool because you don't get over heated and your weightless for that time. However when I exit the pool I am so very aware of my weight and gravity. Just thinking out loud. Thank you

I think Bob and Brad were at fault for providing only half the information. I am sure the report will have said that water exercise was beneficial but also that it provided no long-term solution. When race horses are injured, they are often exercised in pools before returning to normal terra-firma exercise. Admittedly, arthritis is more of a condition than an injury, but current thinking is that (as well as weight loss) the knee muscles have to be strengthened by resistance training to take pressure off the bones.

I agree if you can do land based exercises it would be better than water but if not by all means go to the pool. It made a huge difference in my wife's knees.
