Fire Emblem Fates release in Japan quite a bit before its international one. And like all original scripts, localizations try to alter and adjust them to fit the market they’re about to sell to. This video lists the 7 biggest Fire Emblem Fates main story (conquest, birthright and revelation) writing differences between the original translated Japanese script and the localization that we received. This won’t include Support or DLC differences, as there are plenty enough here to analyse.
While some differences vary from slight to a little more significant, the story of Fates is of course the same. So while these may be the 7 biggest differences, bear in mind that these simply manage to present events/characters in a slightly different way between versions.
The idea for this video is thanks to The Corrin Fans tumblr blog. This blog keeps a record of translations and comparisons. Many of the differences noted here were made by the author of this blog, first. So credit and inspiration goes to them. So if you want a much more in-depth look at the differences, check the link in the description. They go through literally everything.
This video contains spoilers for Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, Birthright and Revelation.

Faerghast do you think it would been better if they Had Garon Soul fighting from the inside his Animated corpse and Try to warn Xander and Corrin about Anonklos being the true Threat? A lot of people called Garon a poor villain... of course most Gamers do not understand that he was dead from the beginning and it was simply an animated corpse some loyal only to Anonklos.. However this Fault comes from bad writing and terrible. Then there's the subject or Theory of ananklos in His Maddened State acually being Jealous of Corrin.. Which is Why Animated Corpse of Garon Wanted To Make Corrin miserable...What was The Point of Keepung Corrin Alive and Then try to assassinate them multiple times?

I feel like the Corrin and Garon changes kinda coincide with each other. In JP Garon was clearly more outwardly respectable. With a less Saturday morning cartoon villain-sounding agenda. It makes sense that people could be blindsided by his villainy more easily in that version vs English.

To me what surprised me the most is how paranoid JP Garon is overall. Like, both versions of him are *huge* jerks, but in the original script dude is so paranoid that I can legit believe his "scorched earth" tactics come less from a place of sheer evil and more from how he just isn't willing to leave anything to chance (the fact he also says "kill them all" far less also helps). The weird part about that though, is that it also makes the whole "present Garon was a slime monster all along" reveal all the more jarrying, so I dunno...

@Moltz: Firstly, it bears mentioning that not only are Nohr and Hoshido on opposite sides in the middle of a war, but that the Hoshidans are quite biased against the Nohrians as well, even more so by the sounds of it in the original Japanese script, so knowing that, it makes quite a bit of sense to me personally why Garon would act the way he does. Don't forget: the ARE enemies, and given how hostile Hoshido is towards Nohr, it makes sense to me to think that this would be grounds for belief that Hoshido would go to great lengths to win the war. As for the whole reveal of Garon being a "slime monster", well, to be completely frank, if it IS jarring, than that just means they did a good job with it, because in my opinion, it's supposed to be, given that we're talking about a character that was not only once human, but also is in command of one of the two nations that are at war with each other, as well as also being the father to 4 of the most important characters in the game as well

5:40 Regarding that first line of "If things were turned around, they wouldn't hesitate to kill us", I actually believe that to be an inaccurate translation. The sentence in question is : 逆らう者がおればもろともに殺せ。 The first word of the sentence is 逆らう(sakarau), meaning "to oppose". Following this is the word 者 (mono), indicating a person or a doer of the verb preceding it. Thus, the sentence would mean "Kill everyone who has the audacity to oppose you" [said to Xander, who is given the order of executing prisoners]. The confusion arises from the word 逆らう beginning with the kanji 逆 (gyaku), meaning "reverse; inverse; turnabout". Unfortunately I'm not overly familiar with the other references regarding Garon, so I cannot comment. A localization change I never see people talk about is how different the dialogue is in the cutscene "Mingled Tears" (Birthright Xander cutscene). The script is as follows: [マークス]: では…お前が信じるその正義とやらに、殉ずるがいい!! (my translation) Xander: Very well... Believe in that justice of yours. Sacrifice yourself for it! (Off. Localization) Xander: Very well. You will die fighting for your cause. I shall defend my homeland! [Xander Strikes Elise] [マークス]: エリーゼ!!!! エリーゼ、しっかりしろ!!! エリーゼ!!!! (my translation) Xander: ELISE!! Elise! Don’t let go, Elise! (Off. Localization) Xander: Elise! Elise! Please! Speak to me! [エリーゼ]: マークス…おにいちゃん… それが…正義…? …愛する者を守るために、必要なのは… 本当は剣じゃなくて温かい手と、涙なの… (my translation) Elise: Xander… Brother… Is that... justice? To protect those you love... you don't need a sword, but a warm hand, and tears/sympathy (its the same word in Japanese) (Off. Localization) Elise: Xander… Your sword… Lay it down for me. Nohr needs more from you. Not just your strength... What we need… is caring… and a warm hand, and tears. [Xander sheds a tear] [エリーゼ]: おねがい、闘いをやめて… (my translation) Elise: Please, stop fighting... (Off. translation) Elise: That’s the way. Try to be at peace. So in the original Japanese, this scene is a direct continuation of Xander and Corrins' ideological battle regarding justice (the Birthright version of the "justice is an illusion" speech, but with Corrin there to argue that he and Hoshido are the just force). Xander physically retaliates Corrin, for him to die a martyr for his definition of justice. Elise then steps in to display her stance on justice and to make her eldest brother reconsider his established meaning of justice - that he needs to protect his family, not kill them. In localization, the scene is basically ripped away from context, making the focus instead be how Xander should be serving Nohr differently, rather than changing what his definition of justice is. Of course, if anyone else would like to contest my translations, please do! I accept the possibility of being wrong (I know I used to read the Xander section a bit differently).

The mayority of the localization changes are Alright, but some do feel like a straight downgrade. The "best" one is probably Corrin being more aggresive to Zola in Birthright and In Conquest, Takumi thinking Nohrians are more despicable. It fits better with the narrative and that they both have actual thoughts. The worst ones are definitely the one where They changed Sumeragi's Ambush to a Peace Treaty that was dishonorable. It just makes Sumeragi look stupid for trying to make Peace with Garon In His Kingdom.

Makes sense. Look at the modern wars being fought today. Who's leading the grunts into wars? For what purpose? When you weigh the options of what two sides have to gain from working together versus what they have to gain by working towards eliminating the other side, it's REAL freaking easy to deduce that the path that involves the least amount of bloodshed is the most ideal. Yes, train your country to prepare for the worst because evil people are real, but never train them to live in paranoia and false claims about their "enemies". When the reality of it is people around the world are more similar to each other than they'd ever like to admit.

@SeraphimDragon

@@AbstractTraitorHero Single out an issue with "the system" and we can talk. Until you break down every single rule/law in existence for a country and clearly define it's purpose, how it is supposed to work, and who benefits from it, then no one can have an open honest conversation about what's actually wrong and who to hold accountable. I mean you and I could watch an "example" of police brutality and draw two entirely different conclusions. The problem is coming to an agreement and deciding what is actually wrong, versus what we *think* is wrong. And a lot of people like to *think* they're right, even when what they think is completely impractical when you apply that logic to a real situation. For the record, I didn't disagree with you. I agree that there's definitely some fucked up issues that need to be addressed. But I'm not for opting to shed blood on the first disagreement. That completely defeats the purpose of forming a society in the first place. If you can't win people over without the use of force, then you're a tyrant. But if people simply don't want to compromise and only want to live in a society that serves THEIR ideology alone, then you're still a tyrant because instead of letting people live freely, you're forcing them to be silent and just do what you want them to do. "Agree to disagree" seems to be a completely lost concept in the "Land of the free".
@AbstractTraitorHero
@AbstractTraitorHero 2 жыл бұрын
@@SeraphimDragon I will be quite frank that the world is in an apocalyptic state and those in power are only thinking of short sighted monetary gains. There can't really be compromise anymore, it is either we solve these issues or let those who profit directly from those issues live out lives of luxury on our blood and our children's blood. I don't think this is very hard to see, revolution seems to be the only option, as those in power are not intrested in compromising. They are old men and women who will die long before the consequences of their actions rich and successful. They simply put do not care, violence is the only real solution at this point. We do not have the time for decades of peaceful struggle if we want the earth to be anything worth living and peaceful protest has always been widely unsuccesful, only succeeding in it's aims when backed by more radical and forceful movements. Whether in India, the united states or otherwise, I'd argue that the form of capitalism we have now has obviously caused the problems we have now, with corporations lying for decades while knowing about climate change. Buying our politicians and more. When but now is the time to stand up? When but now while we still have a world to save? We cannot truly wait, it is all or nothing at this point, any compromise they will hand us will simply not be enough and these company's are desperately even now trying to roll back regulations.

@TheGamersState
@TheGamersState 2 жыл бұрын
This isn't specifically related to the video itself but since we're talking about Fire Emblem Fates, there was something I thought could be interesting. Imagine if the way Corrin turned out in terms of character depended entirely on the route you take. What I mean by this is imagine if you chose the Conquest route and as time went on, Corrin actually started to become infected with Garon's ways and essentially went on to become a full blown villain that you played as? I got this idea when Corrin was pretending to be in agreement with Garon (Even though I doubt Garon fell for it) and it got me thinking; What would it be like if Corrin wasn't pretending and really did start to think the same way Garon did? As for the Hoshidan path, it's basically the opposite and Corrin just...well...pretty much stays the same as he's already a very peace-loving character. And for Revelations, you'd have a mix of both. He'd still be a good guy technically but he'd have a cold and calculating that kept him from being way too trusting and does what he has to do. Thoughts?
@V-Jes
@V-Jes 2 жыл бұрын
I think that may give Corrin bit too much specific type of character what could make it feel bit more inconsistent as well, because the thing holding Corrin back in Fates is the fact that it's also supposed to be a bland avatar character so the player could self insert better to it at same time, if it wasn't for that then it could work lot better.

I had a similar idea, but I was thinking the opposite happens. In Birthright, Corrin is so upset by Garon's betrayal that (s)he actually starts to believe in what everyone says about Nohrians being bloodthirsty and starts to see them less as humans and more as monsters. Ironically because of these thoughts, Corrin starts themself starts to become more bloodthirsty and ruthless and has to be pulled out of it by other characters. Meanwhile in Conquest, we could get a similar story to canon of Corrin trying to change things from the inside (only this time without the V*lla is behind everything twist).

I don’t think it would work, at least for a Fire Emblem game. In every Fire Emblem game, you fight for the side of good, so having Corrin be corrupted wouldn’t really jell well with that. It is a Nintendo game, they aren’t much for having their playable character be outright stated to be evil. If it were not a Fire Emblem/Nintendo game, then it could work, but due to staying within theme of previous entries, it wouldn’t pan out.

@@ignika84 Another reason why Nintendo should branch out and cover more areas. Being honest, I find the japanese script to be more nuanced, like the little changes that they make really give it a different view in the story. I felt that the nohrian side in the japanese version is more sympathetic than in the english version, Garon has less of the cartoony villain vibe, and actually feels like a character, since, there are motivations behind his actions, and avoids several of the downfalls that the english version falls for (mainly the "I don't care about my people" and "Kill them and everyone who defies me"), while showing that his actions come from a place of mistrust and paranoia, and also, Zola's redemption was actually good, like, he tried to repay his debt to you by protecting you when Garon wanted you dead, and Corrin accepts it, instead of acting petty (which is something that always bugged me from the english version, like, it felt bad how Zola was pleading Garon to save Corrin's life, and Corrin being like, "What's gotten into you. Weren't you evil and all?"). Also, the response to Gunter's view of the nobility is honestly a lot more elegant, because it's true, there are some nobles that act like that, and he is justified to feel like that after what he has been through, so, silence is honestly the better way to express how they learn from that and that helps them improve in the future. And the way Corrin reacts in the japanese version to Takumi being posessed is honestly quite good, Corrin in the english version felt like he didn't learn, that he was always in the right, or always found excuses to deflect responsability, but in the japanese version, it feels like at least at some parts, they acknowledge that their actions have consequences, and try to improve, so their mistakes don't hurt anyone more, claiming that he will atone for what he did (it's surprising, but, I can relate with Corrin in the japanese version, which is something I couldn't with the english version. I may even like the character a bit, it feels a little bit more nuanced).

The lore information is nice but I think the passing down of weapons was easy to figure out as the royal siblings dying and thier kids holding the weapons sorta shows the cycle of arms much like Lucina taking falchion from chrom eventually. I kinda like the add on of garon and sumuragi making a peace as eventually war would have happened more so than cheve being the place for oniy hoshido. It adds more to the scene and why hoshido steals azura eventually for a more personal vendetta Corrin sure is More bloodthirsty in en which is funny as they soften it useally for overseas but headless Scarlett is still a thing. Keep forgetting to say this but I honestly like en Morgan in awakening more than jp. She in my theory was broken about betraying her friends so the risen sent by grima would be after her and her post amnesia state would be a good counter for all the bad thoughts. Plus she would probably want to be dotted on by robin as even future past robin is sorry for putting Morgan Through all that so it syncs up well

Though that doesn't fix all the mistakes but does show some effort was made to fix the story a bit. Also same with awakening. I think making Morgan of a daddy's girl in the English version works better considering she is the youngest and only child that doesn't worry about thier younger selves so being a bit spoiled worked better. Not to mention the unmentionable world. Vice Versa how many exist in Nohr? Also interesting that Siegfried is the name of Xander's weapon the dragon slayer of Germanic folklore, while Brynhild is Leo's Tome the love interest of Sigurd and Valkyrie leader, Sigurd is the Norse equivalent of Siegfried who also known for slaying the same dragon Fafnir (in myths it's uncertain if they're the same person or not). 2 Gods in a world where dragons are their Gods, a dragon slayer and another dragon slayer's Juliet... interesting, and how many dragons are there truly in this world, I hope this is expanded more in some future remake... sequel seems very unlikely at this point, but maybe a potential sequel too.

The change to Corrin being overall less aggressive and apparently more naïve may be because they thought that no one would want to insert themselves into the role of a character who is so aggressive. The bit with Birthright and Conquest also not revealing so much of anything of Anankos may be to try to make the story a little bit more complete on both of those routes, without mentioning the instigator of the whole thing as that would create loose ends, which may be why Revelation itself seems to come out of nowhere. It may be that at the time, they didn't understand the point of Revelation and regarded it as simply a non-canon DLC story similar to Infamous' Festival of Blood before finding its true nature, or it may be that they wanted to keep it a complete surprise until you buy the DLC, though that surprise part *is* what ruined it.

Gotta admit this video was pretty confusing to follow, going at such a rapid pace back and forth between versions. I always found it frustrating that people went to such great lengths to get the "real" story by direct translation, that they trusted the official localization that little, and blaming the official localization for "ruining the story." No, the story is still deeply flawed and problematic in the JP script, it is just presented differently. Some of these points from the original script do make certain things make a bit more sense, but the majority is just attitude and slight context, which doesn't change the majority of bad writing the story leans into just to function.

I mean, he's basically calling her out on her immaturity in both lines -- if she IS 13 or something in Japanese, then she still lacks the typical decorum you would expect from a royal 13 year old. 7:14 Is this saying JP Xander fully believed and knew Garon was off his rocker and did nothing anyways? That's a baffling decision, especially if the JP script originally had the line of Xander threatening to execute Corrin if leading them to the Hosidan throne is a trap at the start of Ch. 27.
@daz1543
@daz1543 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree, it makes more sense that Xander is hesitant to betray Garon if he's spent his entire life being submissive. What makes Xander look bad in the localization is that he has multiple scenes showing defiance, especially in his supports where he outright says in EN that he'll always believe Corrin and his siblings over anything else, yet still threatens Corrin about Garon anyways.
@suicune95
@suicune95 2 жыл бұрын
Okay so the whole context of that line is this: “You bastard, what do you understand of Father…! …All this time, I had to pretend not to see. I never disobeyed any order. Someday, everything would go back to the way it used to be… I fought believing that. But, the father of those days is already…” In the Japanese it's a bit more overt in implying/discussing the abuse + trauma the Nohrian siblings faced from Garon. Xander is very much approaching the situation as an abuse victim who has neither the courage nor the power to defy his abuser. On top of that, we know from Leo and Elise's support that Garon actually used to be a good man, at least for the first few years of Leo's life (and probably a significant part of Xander's childhood). So it's not that Xander saw something wrong and just chose not to act. It's that he was so beaten down by Garon's abuse, massively in denial, and (perhaps a bit naively) desperately hoping if Garon got what he wanted then he would eventually return to being the good person he used to be. This line is Xander finally being able to accept that his father is dead and gone and never coming back, and that his denial of the situation needs to end and he needs to have a hand in stopping the monster he's become. Xander's overall defiance toward Garon is mostly an invention of the localization. In the original script he's much meeker toward Garon overall and throughout the game you see him working through his denial at the situation. I highly recommend you look through the conquest story changes post mentioned in the video because it outlines a lot more of these Xander characterization differences.

@@suicune95 If I may add onto this, I personally believe that a big part of the reason why Xander didn't try to actively go against Garon also has to do with the fact that he's the crown prince of Nohr, so it wouldn't do for him to betray his king and father, hence why I disagree with anyone who thinks that Xander is not acting in the right in Birthright. After all, he would likely be looked down upon as a traitor if he did turn his back on Garon, even knowing how corrupt he had become, because as the crown prince, his loyalty has to be to Nohr, regardless of rather he likes it or not. I'm not saying I disagree with your point about how Garon had been abusive this whole time and that Xander simply couldn't bring himself to stand up against his father (in fact, it's actually quite refreshing in my opinion to see someone actually analyzing why Xander acted the way he did rather than criticize him for not taking action against his obviously evil father), because I think you bring up some good points that put this whole thing into perspective better

@@matthewkuscienko4616 Oh there's absolutely a lot of factors at work here! His position is definitely part of it for sure. I think his desire to protect his siblings is also part of his deference, since he can't protect them if he's dead or exiled. I was mostly commenting on the abuse though, since the video left out the last bit of context for that line I quoted which directly alludes to his greater arc as a victim of Garon's abuse. So I thought I would provide context. Since a lot of that got outright left out or changed in the localization people might not be familiar, and the video doesn't really go into depth with it like the linked posts do. In light of that context to Xander's character, I do think his actions in the game are pretty understandable. It's like advanced Stockholm Syndrome mixed with learned helplessness mixed with all of the expectations placed on him as the eldest brother and a prince. I know it's easy to look at the story and judge him for not doing anything/doing more, but even normal, real life abusive situations can be hard to break out of even without all those additional problems stacked on top. So I find this depiction pretty realistic.

That would not be a good thing. Localization is the best way to make a profit because to just translate it many points and full on stories would not make sense do to the different cultures. The only way that someone could enjoy a pure translation is if there was no conflict of culture, they already know what everything means, or do research which not many people want to do when they just want to enjoy something on their downtime. So it would cause reviews to lower and a decrease in profits that could lead to it not being brought over here. Even studio ghiblis, that is remembered for the creator having a no cuts policy, spirited away still was a localization because of added inner dialogue to explain what stuff was when necessary to avoid confusion. What really needs to happen is that localizers need to respect the original work

@@shadeofthenight8988 No one is asking for a google translate. We want stories that are translated well. We don’t need all this unnecessary changes of simplification and censorship. It’s stupid. Most concepts will translate over to english because the game is focusing around lots of idea we already have equivalents for. No need to make something different for a different audience. All this just reinforces my opinion that Xander and Nohr Corrin are such a tools both of them knowning that being complicit in Garon's crimes is wrong but cotinue to do so anyway, also, when it came to Xander's speach on justice. all I could think of was "you tell your self that every night ya privilaged jackass?". Localization Hoshido Corrin seems on the money, as they would ofcourse be suspicious and be preprared to be backstabbed having it already happen to them rather than continue being a naive idiot. Unfortunately a broken story can only be patched to much with a localization and only a complete rewrite could solve all my problems with the story. Like having key infomation be in the actual story and not locked away behind 1 on 1 character conversations across games or be mentioned way to late for it to have any effect.

I think you're misinterpreting Xander here: the way I heard it, it sounded more like he was aware of how corrupt Garon was acting and decided to follow orders against his will out of obligation to his father and king rather than that he knew about Garon's true "slime monster" form this whole time. In fact, I'd argue it doesn't make sense for Xander to know the truth about Garon, just consider this for a moment: 1) For starters, it seems like Garon's true form is quite unstable, so he would want to hide it as much as possible, not just simply because it would make the Nohrian royals not able to trust him (since they would know he's actually a monster, and I would think that if Xander actually was aware of this, he would've said something to his other siblings so that they could know the truth as well), but because it would probably be difficult for him to maintain that form for too long, since his body seems to be dissolving itself. 2) If Xander actually did know about Garon's true form, he would most likely not have held out hope that he could possibly have somehow found a way to get Garon to return to his former self, since the whole reason for WHY exactly Xander is obeying Garon to begin with is because of this very reason specifically. If Xander knew about this the whole time, I believe that he would know that his father is no longer human, and thus most likely beyond saving. 3) It should also be mentioned that Xander was quite surprised to see "Slime" Garon at the beginning of chapter 27, and it wouldn't make sense for him to react that way if he actually did know about this all along. All of this also puts into context his speech about how he knew his father better than anyone and had always wondered what made him change, as well as his comment about how the Garon that was in front of them wasn't truly his father and that the real Garon having been long dead by this point

So the main problem is the terrible writing and the terrible translation.. this combination Made the game completely terrible from a story pov... don't get me wrong I do love the game play.. but The Story writing and how they handled the characters is completely laughable. Severa, Inigo; ans Owain had no purpose.. despite the DLC explanation for them being there.. They made No Move To Look and Help Corrin .. to me it just feels like it got too comfortable with their position With The Nohr Royal Family.. no even if we factor in the Friendship thing.. They are Content with indirectly working King Garon... but to clear this all up it's not actually him it is a Corpse animated by Anaklos while his Soul is Forced to watch The Imposter ruin his family and Nation. You Know it'd be much more realistic if they had Garon Soul was Fighting for Control and Warn the others That he is being possessed.
