Space for camping gear is limited. This is why the best campers carry only multi-purpose camping gear into the field. If the camping gadget does not have a dual-purpose, seasoned campers often leave this item behind. We will be sharing 7 camp items that not only are dual purpose, but ones that you probably have never seen before! And these are not gimmicky camp items. These are camp tools that will greatly enhance your overall camping experience. Weather it be in a teardrop trailer, a rooftop tent, or a basic car camping setup. These 7 items will fit nicely into your camping setup. Ultimately leaving you more space for additional water, food, and other needed supplies. See links below for all the multi-use camping gadgets shown in this video.

I forgot to mention in the beginning of this video that this is not a gear recommendation from me. As the title stated they are multi use camping gear you have probably never seen. Basically stuff for the guy who has everything. I saw it more as a fun video to highlight unique innovations in the camping industry. Do I like this gear? Yes. But I have only been using most of it for a couple of months now. So I can't make a strong recommendation at the moment as I haven't put this gear through paces like I typically do.

I don't know if you remember this, but in one of your very first videos you were linking or suggesting Amazon products and I mentioned that you should get it set up for affiliate links. My two favorites are the speaker/light and the external monitor. The external monitor would be great sitting up in the tent/camper at night to watch a little netflix or playingwithsticks on youtube assuming there's internet connection available. The light/speaker combo is super useful. We rarely disturb mother nature with music but when we're in the mood this is great and having a light is always handy around camp so double win for sure.

You sound just like us. We rarely use these items, but when we do they are pretty magical. It’s nice to be able to get them in smaller form factors now and multi use. Surprisingly enough we only used the projector one time last season so I’m starting to consider if it’s worth bringing out. I’m going to give it one more go around this fall to see how often we use it. I think the external monitor will be the replacement for it if we don’t end up using it.

Hi Tom. Good eye. We only gave a small glimpse of it last summer in the coffee episode when I punctured the tire on the Alaska Highway. We have been in it now for a month as a family. I had been telling May all last year how much I enjoyed it. I don't think she believed me. I think she couldn't get past the aesthetics of the cargo trailer. Thanks for sharing these great items Drew. I think a matt screen protector would solve the issues of glare on the monitor. A low cost option for the kettle is a travel kettle/coffeemaker set which use low power. I've seen them occasionally at thrift shops, some are quite old but often in good shape as they haven't been used much and are complete with a compact case and accessories
@PlayingwithSticks

I didn’t even realize a matte screen protector was a thing. I seen the protectors that stop people from looking from an angle. I’m starting to realize there’s so many things that most people know that I’m clueless about. Any chance you could post a link to the travel kettle you were talking about. I’m not quite sure I understand. Sounds like something that was made in the past that could be found used, but not as common today?

@@PlayingwithSticks Drew, I heard about matt protectors as many people are using them for the main screens of Tesla cars to reduce glare while driving in the sun. I believe they are available for laptops and tablets also. Re the Buydeem - since I don’t camp in a camper, I love my little single burner stove and my Stanley cup. I boil water, make tea, soup, oatmeal, etc with it. My other favorite multi-use item is my Opinel knife. I can cut food, cordage, carve, etc. and it folds up small. I do like the solar powered lanterns that have a USB port. PS - I ended up investing in a Burley trailer for my bike and loving it. @@PlayingwithSticks so far the biggest adventure with the Burley was hauling my viola from my cabin to campus 3/4 of a mile each way every day in Interlochen for chamber music camp. All my fellow campers were jealous. 😂 I did end up making a “floor” out of 3/8” plywood for the trailer to protect the bottom from the viola case (and for hauling boxes of canned cat food). The floor is easily removable and super light weight.

Basically every fly fisherman in Alaska does not wear a vest or a fanny pack they only wear backpacks. I’m the only guy on the river every day with my fanny pack. I rock it proudly, but I get quite a few comments out on the water about it. I’m also known as the guy who has different fanny packs for different waters or fish. 😂 I even stumbled upon high dollar fanny packs. Who knew there was even a thing. The tri-fold ‘panel/table’ seems as if it’d have a little more utility if the solar surfaces were facing outside when it’s folded into a ‘table leg.’ Even though the angle to the sun wouldn’t be optimized while using as a table, odds are it could collect a few electrons while being used as a table in the daytime…
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Жыл бұрын
That is a great point! Ecoflow just came out with a panel that has solar cells on the rear as well. The thought behind this is that they could gain some energy from the amount of sun bouncing off the ground and up onto the panel. To enhance this they suggested also putting down something reflective on the ground. Any extra bit helps!

I think the panels come in two sizes. There is a 100 some what version and a 200 watt version I believe. I found them through a kickstarter campaign. So I don't even think they have fully hit the market yet. as for the eyebrows we can thank Thailand for that. With my Danish DNA my eyebrows bleach out every time I am in the sun. They are there, but so hard to see once they go light. Typically half bleach out and the other half stay brown, so it looks quite weird. 😂

I am still on the fence about it. It packs quite small, does great for the family. But I am always afraid it will break. It hasn't yet, but I haven't used it enough to trust it fully. The table goes by many brands and names. I think we picked ours up online form Home Depot. Unfortunately I do not have a video about it. The only con I have found with this table is that it struggles a little bit on uneven terrain. Meaning, you may need to stick a shim under a leg or two. I’m going to have to look at that price again. I thought with the Kickstarter discount it was in the $200 range. Yes, we reached out to them to try it out as it hadn’t even hit the market yet. We thought it would be a fun thing to get our hands on. We actually were a bit cynical thinking we would just sort of make fun of it, but it’s actually been very useful. Oh, multi-purpose gadgets. For those who really boondock, going way off grid. Personal Locator beacons. these work like the marine EPIRB's... you buy them, register them, then, if you get in trouble, big trouble stranded, hurt, unable to get back, no cell service... you can activate the beacon, and it notifies the government of your location, and they can send a rescue team. NOW the base PLB's are no subscription, its just registering the units code number. BUT... you can also get a version that includes Sat coms, allowing you to send and receive text messages. These Satellite Messengers may have a full keyboard on them... OR they can have bluetooth or wi-fi. This version sync's to your phone, and you can text with your phone, get GPS information, Weather reports, Topo-map navigation... and even if your phone dies, you still have the option in emergencies to pull the tab, and push the emergency help button. down side here is, these require a monthly subscription. Something to look into and give a review on drew :)

We have a dilemma though, my husband really wants a toilet in the camper and I really want an outdoor kitchen. We cannot find any with both of those features. The only little campers with bathrooms have the kitchen inside. Have you ever come across a camper with a bathroom and outdoor kitchen??? Thanks!
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Жыл бұрын
I am not sure off the top of my head but the best route would be two things. Both the T@B and the Rpod have layouts with a galley kitchen. I would check their floorplans to see if either of them have a bathroom inside and a galley kitchen outside. I would guess one of them would. I think the T@B only has a couple floor plans but I think Rpod may have a few more. If you’ve watched our channel at all you know we are all about making the least comfortable person comfortable. So if an outdoor kitchen and the toilet is the solution I would do everything I could to make sure I got that floor plan. Now just to cross our fingers hoping that floor plan exists.

Hey Drew & Fam! I was just talking to a guest who is traveling in Baja with his tent and we were discussing about camping gear - he mentioned something that was just aligned to what you’re sharing here: When you’re camping, make sure everything you care has at least 2 uses. And now we’ve your video to complement that too with some cool items. Speaking of a multiuse tools - knife’s, those can save the party on unexpected eventualities. I saw you’re using a different generator now - maybe an update to complement those trifold solar panels will be awesome. Dining table: have you seen the one offered by sylvansportsgo? Cool stuff. Cheers amigo - ‘Till the next one!

Speaking of knives I am currently looking into a tool called the Stake out from Gerber. I’ve had a lot of issues with devices designed to pull out stakes. I am hoping this is the solution. The generator/power station I think is one of a kind. Well I think it’s the first of its kind but I bet they’ll be a bunch of copycats. Bouge RV put out a small power station that charges fast like the larger ones. This is a 285 W hour so basically 300 W hour power station that charges in half an hour. I picture it working perfect like on the job site. Run your power tools head in for lunch and top it off and come back out. So far we like it the only issue is it tends to be much larger than a 300 W power station it’s about equivalent to my 500 W Bluetti. But at these charging speeds I think it will become my favorite home use power station.

Solar/table. In truth its a little to gimicy for me. I prefer to have panels going when ever they can, keep the battery banks fully charged because they can drain quick if you are using them for a lot of things... When you have "split" propane/electric appliances, like fridges.. the more you can use electric, the less propane you are using, the longer you can camp for. drew... flashlight on powerpacks. Thats for tent camping, small cabins, and vehicle camping in truck beds without lights. You use those lights against a wall and illuminate most of the bed or tent. You're spoiled with your lights inside your camper. try turning them off, and just using the power pack lights. LOL. You know, one of the most forgotten "multi-tools" is... the cellphone. People really underestimate what they can do. A cellphone has blue tooth, and has a USB port. So, my cellphone gets plugged gets set in a Logitech K480 Wireless Multi-Device Keyboard (oh this is a multi-funciton keyboard, it can be configured for up to 3 separate devices and "hot flip" between them with just the turn of a dial). I then plug in my micro USB hub, poof, now i can plug into an HDMI tv, add a memory card, oh and use a mouse. My phone can act as a full lap top or tablet... But wait. If i plug in a micro USB tv tuner, my phone can now get tv channels without data. there are TONS of gadgets and toys you can add on or use though your phone. One thing you should look into, for a multi-tool. Emergency AM/FM radios with Noaa, hand crank, usb charging, small solar panel, often take batteries too. You can use charge them so many ways and use them for emergency charges of phones, or keeping track of emergency warnings.

I agree with you on the solar/table. Definitely makes sense to use it whenever possible. Solar that is. I have seen tables where you actually set the items on the cells. Obviously the life of these would probably decrease faster, but at least you get some rays. Also good point on the power station lights. I have been very spoiled with our trailers. I actually find 99% of trailer lighting is too bright for May and I. We are big fairy light fans in this family. I just purchased usb fairy lights for the first. I like how they run off of our small power banks, I like that they are dimmable. But I find they are still a little bright for me at the lowest setting. Not for everyday use, but for when the kids and May are sleeping and I am up getting ready for bed. I am just picturing all the uses you described with the phone attached to the portable external monitor. I have never even considered the possibility of attaching keyboards or mice to a phone. Now I know it is possible. I think I am due to look at Emergency radios. Sounds like they are quite updated from the ones I am used to. Good hearing from you Jennifer!
