Like the old school ones, yeah. Especially with the protruding, usually black rubber pieces. They were not attractive, but useful. Push someone, without marring the paint. Hit something and if you were lucky and it was light, the rubber bumpers took the brunt of it the impact and the actual metal bumper came out o.k. or with just a ding in it. Now it's a whole piece of expensive, molded plastic that shatters to bits.
@oceanbytez847
@oceanbytez847 5 жыл бұрын
that is actually the point though. As it shatters it takes all the kinetic energy with it. When 2 objects collide the energy has to go somewhere so if the object you hit doesn't move and your bumper or frame won't budge guess where that energy goes... Right into your chest from all the inertia carrying you into the seat belt resulting in broken bones, probably a broken seat belt, and your death. The new system crumples on impact but it eats the energy with it by doing this therefore making a 60+ MPH crash very survivable. The downside is that it does result in easily totalling a car. It is worth mentioning that solid bumpers seem better at low speed accidents but if you have an accident at a high speed solid bumpers and frames prove to be far more deadly. Also the bumper not budging puts more pressure on the frame increasing the chances the engine would be pushed back into the cabin which is an issue classics had when you hit things like trees at high speeds. Modern cars handle these same wrecks far better. The technology is taken to the extreme in formula 1 racing as well. They have crashes well over 100 MPH very regularly but deaths and injuries are relatively rare.

Modern safety standards didn’t kill the bench seat, it’s the consumers desire for a center console and cup holders. Most trucks still have bench seats and they have an airbag in front of them and they have fully functioning seatbelts. They can usually be folded down and double as a center arm rest too.

The tire foam is DANGEROUS. Some can actually make the tire burst if the mechanic pokes around for the hole with a screwdriver. I've heard a mechanic horror story about how this happened. He was knocked out by debris when the tire exploded and woke up in the hospital with a collapsed lung. His boss thinks it was caused by the tire foam because it is as flammable as gasoline or lighter fluid!

I like those windows better. Its a bitch to fix the electronic ones because u gotta take off the door pannel and work with all the electrical shit. id take crank windows over electrical anyday because id use a car for 20+ years and cranks wont ever break or slow down over time. Plus you can change out the cranks to some pretty cool looking old school ones
@ScubaSteveM45
@ScubaSteveM45 6 жыл бұрын
Last 'new' car I drove with them was a 1995 Dodge Neon, which was odd because only the back seats had crank windows, the fronts were power. I like power windows since when I was a kid only the top of the line cars had power windows and it was still an upgraded option. The reason they are a thing of the past is that automakers have to make 2 types of car door and door panel to account for both power windows and crank windows so from their end its cheaper just to make them all power windows and have one unified car door and door panel for a given model

The dipstick gas cap to tell you how much gasoline you had was fun too. I also liked the windshield wipers powered by the air in the spare tire (VW Beatle 1938 - 1960). The automatic Bitcoin transmitter for paying tolls wirelessly was nice also.

It's because in a modern car only a passenger's cage is made to hold off a big force so it doesn't bend and hurt people inside, everything around it (hood, trunk etc) is made to absorb the force of the impact (so it get's smashed or bends) and the least amount of force gets to the passengers. Hood or a trunk of the old car, if not claimed by rust, won't get so damaged in a low speed crash but the problem is that it'll transform (instead of absorbing) most of the force to the passengers. Even a 5mph "crash" can cause serious neck injury if a force is not partially absorbed. Considering everything, I would still take 68' Mustang over any new car!

Still a thing in many many cars, champ but you're forgiven for not being aware of that, since car companies always show the top trim versions of their vehicles in advertising like the cars they advertise as starting at $15,999? yeah you better believe that one has an old school ignition key as well as cloth seats and power nothing, but too bad that's nothing like the one prominently featured in the ad that costs closer to $35,000 and has all the bells and whistles

Way WAY back in the early days of cars, all tires were completely white (not pure white though, off white) because it was cheaper to have all white tires than to color them black, but over Time car makers made white wheels with black on the bottom. After a while, when it was easier to color the tires, it was more of a cool style rather than a cheap way to do it.

As of mid-2019: 1) Manual transmissions. 2) Parking brakes (which were needed for manual transmissions in case they were left in neutral.) 3) Low gear. 4) Using a rotating knob to shift the automatic transmission instead of the traditional shifter. 5) Continuous variable transmissions (CVTs) instead of gear type automatic transmissions. They are less reliable but the automobile manufacturers don't care if it lasts. That's the customer's problem (especially after the warrantee has expired.) 6) Actually spare tires (tyres) are disappearing altogether. 7) Key starting and push button unlocking fobs are being replaced by RFID chip proximity fobs in your pocket. When you are near, the doors will unlock or allow push button start. 8) And now they have those big ugly holes in the front for the grill. No bumpers anymore. 9) Plastic headlights instead of glass. 10) Up until the late 1970s, car interiors were very quiet because of lots of sound proofing. Now small to mid-range cars are LOUD on the inside. Only high end luxury cars are quiet because of both passive (foam like material in doors, body panels, etc.) and active noise cancelling. 11) Soon rearview mirrors will be replaced by cameras with the view screen where the mirror was. 12) Auto braking, lane assist and auto driving cars because people are playing with their iPhones instead of driving. 13) Almost total computer control systems. Microchips everywhere. 14) No longer able to work on your own car with being a computer/software specialists (see #13).

They were discontinued to save money. Initially, the upper trim line of some class of vehicles had them after they discontinued them on base line cars (90's Jeep Cherokees, Ford Broncos, etc.), and at the same time, the luxury makes often discontinued them because air conditioning made them seldom used (though I believe Lincolns had them last). Eventually they disappeared entirely. But they were nice during certain times, and the big ones (such as on Jeep full size wagoneers 62-92) could move tons of air through the cabin in seconds, making them quite comfy during nice weather.

he didn't spill it, that's from people not giving it time to empty all the way into their tank and then set it back in the pump with the nozzle still holding several ounces. so the next person spills it on their car or cloths. this is especially annoying for motorcyclist. when we grab it and bring it over to the top of our tank and it spills several ounces all over it. it would be nice if they'd design the nozzle so it quits doing this. if you don't tilt the nozzle up it leaves some in it. creating the problem what you see in the video.

One feature that may not have completely disappeared but which used to be much more common than it is now is the rear-mounted engine driving the rear-wheels. That was a surprisingly popular configuration during the 1950s and 1960s. Of course Porsche still has that, but just about every other car manufacturer has long since abandoned it. I believe the beginning of the end for rear-engined cars was the publication of Ralph Nader's famous book, "Unsafe At Any Speed", the principal subject of which was the infamous Chevrolet Corvair, which had a rear-mounted air-cooled engine. Other examples of once-common automotive features that have been gone for so long that the presenter probably is not even aware of them include hand-cranked engine starting, air-cooled engines, 2-stroke engines, running boards, rumble seats and 6-volt electrical systems. I actually learned to drive on a Renault R-8 which not only had a rear-mounted engine, but also had a hole through the rear panel through which the back end of the lug wrench could be inserted to hand-crank the engine in case the battery ran out of power. I never had occasion to do that, but the car was actually designed so that, if need be, it could be done.

@Gappie Al Kebabi Yeah, no, we didn't. The repair tree was very simple, and finding the problem straight forward. Spark, fuel, compression. No one ever tore an engine down for a bad spark plug, where did you ever even get such an idea? Amazing how to world worked quite well without having to have a computer not so very long ago.

When I was younger people seemed to spend time making sure their headlight beams were set correctly, nowadays a lot of people just get in the car and go. It's obvious if your lights are set too high if people keep flashing their lights at you, or if you are driving down an unlit street, or in fog. The worst offenders seem to be hatchbacks.

"Space saver tyres" are OK until you have to use them.Suddenly, you are stuck with a huge, dirty, standard tyre which won't fit in the tiny "space saver" spot, & has to ride loose in the boot.Again, tolerable if you don't have anything else in the boot,but ,if you have it is a major nuisance. Antennas? The stumpy "fin " type are very inefficient, & rely upon a preamplifier built into the moulding.If that fails, goodbye radio reception. The dumbest thing that has been introduced are " start" buttons which take us back to the real old days.The combined ignition/starter/ accessories/ steering lock was easy & convenient to use, but the "bean counters"didn't like it, as it cost a bit more than a sensor array for a card & a cheap push button.Hence, a convenient feature has been lost to "progress".

And when the [so called space saver? they don't] is less in overall diameter the car tends to lean to one side, [Hyundai kona] 37 mm less in diameter. hit the brakes in a hurry and pray. I agree on the start/stop ignition button, a potential cause of trouble when the engine will either not start or stop. Another shitty idea is the "electric park brake" , likewise if the switch fails you have a problem ,they love to transfer all functions possible to the computer to save cost.
