Part 2 of our Backcountry camping trip in Algonquin Park Ontario, via canoe, August 22-28 2021. A full week in the wilderness of Ontario with our dog! This video features day 3 & 4 of the 7 day trip. Day 3 was a rest day on Hogan Lake. We cooked eggs and bacon on the fire for breakfast. Explain how to wash dishes in the backcountry with Leave No Trace Principles. We went swimming and cooked pizzas on the fire. Jamie explains his tarp set up - how to hang a tarp. Day 4 we take off for Burntroot Lake. We paddle all of Burntroot in the wind, in search of the perfect campsite - alas we find it and settle in for a great evening. We had wind, we had rain, we had sun and a beautiful sunset.

@@TwoPacksandaPup The portage from Big Crow to Hogan has similar boardwalks . Though the wheel cart trail is much longer than the portage . Though motors up to 6 hp are just allowed in the spring and fall. Prince Phillip was flown into Hogan to fish back in the 60's . That VIP treatment was later stopped.

Awesome, been waiting all week-lol. I stayed on a small island in Red Pine Bay that was quite unique. I agree, AlpineAire meals are probably the best, but I used to use the winter months to make dehydrated meals for the next season. Thank you for the flashbacks; so nice to re-visit those sites & portages again.

I can't find it at the moment, but if no one has already commented, those "Spiders" (Harvester's-not a true Spider) are perfectly harmless. We had a similar experience one year where they were all over everything. I think it may have been mating season.

My dog is a bit smaller than Emma so I’m not 100% sure that this would work for you . I bring 4 plastic clamps ( they are black with orange tips-kinda look like giant clothes pins) and use a piece of shade cloth to cover an area of the canoe. I clip it across the canoe. That gives him a shaded area to lay under .
@TwoPacksandaPup
@TwoPacksandaPup 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Julie! I bet that works perfectly. We’ve been wishing Emma would lay down lower to reap the benefits of a cool canoe bottom and to be able to shade her better, but Emma is a bit challenging as she likes to sit up high on our backpacks.. has to be right in the action and moves around a lot. The umbrella was not perfect.. but not terrible 😂 may give it another go if we expect heat and sun.

That was fantastic! I enjoyed every second…especially Emma❤️. I was raised by golden retrievers lol My parents bred goldens when I was a child and I joke that I had two mothers but one of them had four legs and a tail. I have been using OvaEasy eggs for so long that I remember when they used to include a measuring scoop in the pouch. Definitely the best egg option available. You guys should try Peak Refuel meals. They’re fairly new and a tiny bit more expensive than MH but I think they’re worth it. I buy them either directly from the website or from REI here in the US. I just checked and they are available in Canada. Thanks for another super video

Stayed at that site on Hogan around 1990. Had to set up both canoes braced against a tree as windbreaks. We scaled the cliff (from around back) across the bay - super high when you get to the top. James, have you ever considered swapping out your cord for Dynema? Expensive but extremely strong and lightweight.. Doesn't tangle 1.7 5mm diameter is all you'd need for your tarp. Reduces weight and bulk. Are you a fluvial geomorphologist?
@TwoPacksandaPup

Very cool! We considered seeing if we could hike up but didn't get around to it. James thanks you for the dynema tip, he will check it out. James is just fascinated by the geology of Alginquin Park.

I've only just found your channel and I love your videos! Great to watch on dreary winter days. I would love to know more about the gear you take with you - I'm hoping to get a new tarp this year (I just have a bulky one from Canadian Tire that I'm sick of portaging!) and a couple of camping chairs for my partner and I. What's the tarp/chairs that you use, and would you recommend them?
@TwoPacksandaPup
@TwoPacksandaPup 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Liz, we're so glad you enjoy coming along on the adventures! We absolutely love our tarp and chairs. Jamie's chair is a Helinox Chair Zero, mine (Jens) is a Helinox Chair 1 (slightly heavier, but does feel less tight in the seat than the Chair Zero). They are worth the investment for the lightweight aspect and are quite durable. The tarp we use is very lightweight and would highly recommend it although on the pricey side, its the Rab Siltarp 2.
