As a Journeyman Plumber with almost enough hours in to be considered a Master Plumber I worked for this outfit that all of the crews favorite catch phrase was "Get'er Done" which till to this day I can't stand for what it implies..I ran into an issue while setting the tub..the inside corner wall was so far out that I had a 1-7/16 gap between the tub and wall..I knew what had to be done but it was my 4th day with this company..so I called the job foreman over and asked how he wanted it done..he told me to set it as it was and let the sheet rockers deal with it !! I told him he would have to find someone else to do it because I don't do "slop" work and to give me another task..so he did..my new job was to tie in the upstairs bathrooms copper water lines..so I start and immediately find that the drops were on the other side of a laminate beam and in South Dakota you can't drill a laminated beam..so with the 3/4 copper they already had run I was forced to run 20 feet down..go around the beam then come 20 feet back..some real crap I tell you..personally I would have cut all the copper out and started over but I was already informed that the foreman had made all the drops for all the water upstairs and I was supposed to tie it all in.. He saw what I was doing and questioned why I was wasting almost 100 feet of 3/4 copper..I told him 1 line for cold 1 line for hot and I asked why is it wasted ? he told me I should just bore 2 holes in the beam after all the drops for the bathroom are right there on the other side of the beam..well I said code wouldn't allow me to drill the beam..he looked at me then walked off..while later the owner of the company shows and has a fit..so he tells me that I should pack my s**t and leave the jobsite.. Well as it turns out the guy didn't want to pay so I got with the states attorney in Pierre and she was livid for some reason and promised I would get paid..4 business days later the owner showed up at my door with my check..he kind of looked down at his feet and said I was right about the beam and told me he needed someone like me in his company..I said I already took my Masters test and was already assigned a crew with another company..besides your foreman is your trouble he had me a senior Journeyman unloading trucks when you have two apprentices for that job and all of his drops are in the worst possible places.. Long winded I know..I soon found that new construction WAS NOT FOR ME !! the quality is s**t and I just couldn't do it..so I went into service plumbing and was very happy doing it..in my opinion older houses are better because there was pride in the work being done..not just "getting er done" Edit: I am humbled by the responses to this comment I have been Ostracized for my staunch stand on quality work by many peers..THANK YOU !!! for giving my some relief from thinking the whole world has lost it's mind..

they are not legit. all these items mentioned would fail inspection and no CO would have been given. even the flashing, roofer may have called it complete, but it would have failed final roof inspection. seems to me this guy went into an uncomplete home to do some free advertising and generate business. i have seen many of these so-called inspectors come into home during QA process, and they literally grab the QA list left for trades and simply copy it. most private inspectors are rip offs. Edit, 1 more thing i wanted to mention, the missing duct from the hood vent. there is a required inspection for that BEFORE it can be covered up with a housing. CO would NOT be permitted without that inspection. I will agree with some of the comments on here, large builders want quantity over quality for sure to meet the demands of corporate, you know, the folks that have NO idea what it takes to build a quality home. stop beating up on us little guys in the field, we have bosses that give directives, and they have bosses that give them directives. sh!t rolls down hill you know.

Can only imagine what is hidden behind the walls that you cannot easily inspect. Makes you wonder about the building inspectors who allowed those walls to be uninsulated like that. I'm a CST (Construction Surveillance Technician and I have had contractors put up 150' of sheetrock without letting me inspect the framing and first layer assuring me that it was double rocked. @GingerO762
@GingerO762 2 жыл бұрын
More often than not the Contractors are the problem and not directly the builder. At the end of the day, the builder employs them and has to draw the line but the labor market is too cut throat right now and doesn’t reward individuals who produce quality work. The builders don’t try to maximize profits, they simply try to make one in the first place. Most companies have to do everything in their power to achieve a 15% return on their money while leveraging millions of dollars to build a subdivision.
@gorkyd7912
@gorkyd7912 2 жыл бұрын
The framing goes up on Monday, the insulation goes up Tuesday morning, the rock goes up Tuesday afternoon, and it gets painted Wednesday. This multiplied by 50 houses on any given day. So there's just not enough inspectors and even the bosses of the companies actually building the houses don't always get to see them as they're built.
@SansNeural

@@GingerO762 "doesn’t reward individuals who produce quality work" That's been true in most residential builds for at least decades. I'll suggest that the two biggest problems are contractor competence and builder diligence in checking contractors' work. The building industry is shameful. Here’s a quick story: Years ago I decided to build a house so I worked part time with my brother who is a contractor. After seeing what goes on in the industry, shotty work bye subcontractors and inspectors that don’t even get out of their car do the inspections, just pencil whip them. ….. well I decided to design and build my own house myself with only my brother helping on framing and the foundation. After that it was all mine, not a single subcontractor. …. Probably I have the only house built in recent history in California that is actually built legally to code and no Mexicans worked on it. The industry was already bad enough without Mexicans. Bring in uneducated Mexicans, and you double down on shotty work. I hate to say it. But it is true

I was asked to check on a contractor and his City/County Inspections during construction of some townhomes. The one hour rated party walls were concealed before they were inspected. Insulation was approved before all the insulation was installed. Framing inspection were made without truss or house plans, no tape measure etc., too many issues to list. The owner asked the contractor to advise me when inspections were to be made, he or the county never did. Some contractors have a lot of clout. I've known them to request a certain inspector because he will pass anything. I also know inspectors that were replaced on a job because the contractor though they were were getting too many failed inspections. What happens in a lot of these cases is I think the general contractor hires the cheapest subs who have guys that don't care or don't know the codes. Plus the GC doesn't properly schedule the job so subs are overlapping and stretched thin. I guarantee that vent pipe is a bad scheduling issue and the cabinet contractor thought somebody was coming back to fix it. Classic situation it's always someone else's fault in new construction. The only updates are internal such as painting, new tile, full wall insulation, new furnace ducts in the attic, and new pex piping. The best thing about this house when it comes to updates is that the typical costs is around $5,000.00. Had new windows installed in 2019, which cost me $6,200. Not bad. Those electrical defects you uncovered are terrible, especially the liquid tight flex not connected to the AC compressors, just left hanging by the jacketed power cables. Normally single conductors would be pulled into flex or EMT. The exterior outlet in a hole via a brick wall with a handy box not even anchored. No duct work on the hooded exhaust fan in the kitchen. The last with the grounding clamp on the gas line such poor workmanship.

That's what you get when you hire one cheap crew to wire all the houses in that new community. They're in a rush, don't care and most importantly don't understand the reason why we have electrical codes. I'm a new construction electrician in Florida and we have the the most codes of any state. And our inspectors are very strict. Our company has hired journeymen from other states and I am always shocked at how little they actually know and how much other states let them get away with.

I bought my retirement home via a VA lone. In 2011 it cost me $1,400 to "close". But my broker advised me to get an independent inspection , which I did at additional cost. My inspector had the sellers address and repair a firewall in the attic issue, (I bought a townhouse)But he identified 4 circuit breakers that had been recalled that he had the sellers address as well.I retired in my early 50's . Most of my neighbors are in their 60's and 70's . I get a lot of calls from the widows for advice and help. Last month the lady next door had her kitchen power go out . I worked the circuit breakers. ( no love)Then asked her who did her inspection? of corse it was a report paid for by the seller. I told her about my experience and the inspectors report about the circuit breakers and how all the units were built at the same time.I felt sorry for her ,but was glad I knew better. My place was only 10 years old at time of purchase . she's been here about 5.

How would you breakdown the reasons for such issues that you find in categories such as: builders don't understand, builders think it is good enough but know it's not to the letter, builders are in a hurry to meet deadlines, builders trying to save money on materials/labor, and finally a category for fraud. I assume a very small percentage you would imagine are fraud, but it would be interesting. My categories may be lacking, apologies. Thank you for the video. That was amazing the issues you discovered. And to think a thermal imaging gun would be used by an inspector. Cool!
@astramancer
@astramancer 2 жыл бұрын
My guess: A lot of these are either "don't know" like the siding touching the roofing, or "not my job" where someone was supposed to come in afterwards and do it and it just got lost in the shuffle (like the missing caulk) or where someone was supposed to do something and the guys who came in later to finish up didn't know that it wasn't supposed to be that way (like the missing insulation). The wiring on the AC units and the bonding of the gas line was just plain shoddy work, the people doing it should have known better and there's nobody else whose responsibility it could have been. But it all boils down to "the builders are cheap." Cheaping out on labor so the people working don't have as much knowledge and experience, cheaping out on labor so there's just plain not enough people to get the work done in the hours allotted, cheaping out on labor by not giving the foremen enough time to make sure everything is done right.

These subs are coming in and trying to speed build since builders are in a building frenzy now. Busiest I have ever been in 13 years so many many mistakes. New home buyers sort of meander thru and the builder may "overlook" some things. Hopefully the inspector isnt the builder's good old boy drinking buddy. Great lesson on New Home Construction hack jobs. I spent an hour on the telephone with a coworker (In the late 1990s!!). He was telling me how a General Contractor's roof sub was installing Cedar Shake Shingles over a solid roof deck surface (OSB I presume), throughout a new subdivision. Not even a transitional material between --just placing the shingles right on the deck. We were having a great laugh!! Hey, who cares how long that will last!! The first owner will have sold the house to the "2nd Owner" or 3rd who gets the major ills with the house by then. Not to mention they pay a higher sale price which always goes with a 2nd and even a 3rd buyer. NO THANKS. Just like everything else now, greed has replaced quality with many consumer goods.

@@bug2011 Virtually no one "personally" builds entire houses these days - they are almost all general contractors who hire subs and oversee(presumably) the work being done by subcontractors. They are STILL "local builders". But as my own experience proves... that's no guarantee of a quality home. Even if you found someone who "personally" works on the home - that's no guarantee of a quality home.. they could be complete hacks or have over extended themselves too. My dad designed and built two of the houses we lived in when I was a kid. When I say he built them I mean he paid framers, roofers etc, but he was heavily involved and did a lot of supervising. He also did other things like additional anchoring of the frame to the foundation and having additional wall studs, something like 30% more studs. He basically did the entire inside on his own with occasional help from one of my cousins. Insulation, all drywall, ceilings, doors, plumbing, hvac ducts, and most of the electrical. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the only parts he outsourced was the frame work, concrete for the basement, and some parts of the electrical setup. Back then I couldn't understand why he did it that way but as I got older and saw more and more of these 'cookie cutter' homes, it suddenly made sense. That house was built in the late 90s and there's no reason for it to not be in great shape for decades to come.

"I removed the cabinetry cover and found it was not connected." But it was connected.....by air. It 's that new "smart air". That fan takes in dumb air and thru trade secrets and proprietary engineering, the mfg can not expose, it turns it into "smart air." It knows to when it exits the fan to immediately search for an exhaust tube, it automatically makes the hard turn and go only into the vent and will travel thru no other areas. Smart Air, besides having self awareness and intelligence, is also self powered. It draws its power not from sunlight but from darkness and that's how it is able to flow from the fan thru the exhaust pipe. That's why when you opened the cabinet it wasn't flowing. The old school ways of needless continual ducting are gone. "Smart Air" is now available and most likely already installed in 1000's of homes without their owners even realizing it.

You are soooo right! I’ve been a sub contractor for over 30 years and witnessed some horrible sights. All homes are inspected in California from start to finish, the problem is a vast majority of inspectors are incompetent. It stems really from using laborers that are illiterate, uneducated and uncaring, that’s what you get when hire illegals! You can place the blame on The Contractors that hire them and don’t supervise them or properly train them. Oh and don’t give me that BS that that’s all the labor market has offer. I’ve hired and trained many who had zero experience in the field and if they didn’t become proficient very quickly they didn’t have a job. Actually I preferred to hire people with no experience that way I wouldn’t have to break any bad habits. I’ve hired many a Journeyman and let them go the first day on the job. You need to find people who want to work and want to learn a Trade that will make them a great living for their entire life.

That grounding clamp made me smile. My dad had his breaker panel replaced, which required a new inspection. There was a proper ground wire run to a ground clamp on the water main where it entered the basement, with insulation wrapped around the pipe (over and around the clamp, not under it). It passed inspection, but neither the electrician nor the inspector noticed that 6" inside the wall, inside that insulation, the metal pipe transitioned to plastic, and the ground clamp was on the plastic part.
