Some things that bother me at my school: lights inside buildings being left on overnight. Some lights around walkways make sense on campus - I personally feel more safe with them on. But so much energy could be saved. Also, I live in Texas, and when it's 100+ degrees out, it doesn't need to be 66 degrees indoors. It actually feels jarring when it's that much colder inside, and we don't need to waste that much energy to cool rooms to a temperature that also frequently affects women more negatively due to professional attire standards. Another thing about being in Texas: our landscaping should not involve grasses and things that need so much water and mowing!! Lastly, all the freebie giveaways. This one is hard because it's so common, so schools probably feel like they need to compete for people's good graces with free stuff. But I don't need all these pens, drawstring bags, shirts, stress balls, notebooks, etc.! How many can a person use! And they're so highly branded that they aren't good for passing along in secondhand stores. Thanks for doing what you can to fix the things you see that need change near you!

@@Emily-hd9sm the one good thing about the freebies is that poor students often utilize them. My college had a large group chat where students could post free items/events and then others could come grab any leftover food from an event, get free pens/supplies/clothing, etc and that was really helpful for when some people couldn’t afford those things normally. So it can be extremely wasteful, but they do have some good benefits too

Can I just say you have really changed how I shop. I was the queen of buying decorations that were just good enough because they were on sale. This year I bought two Christmas decorations that I loved and didn't bring in any of the cheap stuff I normally would have only to declutter it in a year or two. I know it doesn't sound like much but for me it was a big victory.

I had to chuckle when she gave us permission to take it easy this weekend. It's my birthday weekend and I made a point of explaining to my friends "I give myself a break for my birthday, guilt-free selfishness once a year", and then also said I don't want any disposables and asked if someone's gift to me can be doing the dishes on the night of my party 😂💚💚

Things I started doing to cut back on waste: *Making my own oat milk *repurposing food scraps before composting. I use the oat pulp for baking, facials and skin, etc, and veggie scraps to make my own veggie stock. I also turn orange and lemon peels into vinegar cleaner. *Composting and taking my compost to my parent’s garden *making my own rice instead of buying frozen. (This was a hard one. Struggle with depression and have low energy so I liked having these on hand for low energy days) *buying stasher bags and freezing my own jasmine rice for the tougher days. *cutting up unused/old T shirts to use instead of buying paper towels.

Please forgive the ridiculousness of replying to your comment three months out ( just now watching for the first time) but, often times thrift stores have rice cookers - I picked one up for $3, and I no longer hate to make rice. You put the water and rice in and walk away, never have to check on it and it turns itself off after cooking perfectly every time. You can also put veggies and beans in there and not have to bother cooking anything else. Best three bucks I’ve spent in ages.

I think leading by example is a good one too. My boyfriend wouldn’t consider himself an environmentalist, but the other day he said his classmates in law school think he is. When I asked him why, he said a teacher asked the class what their favorite brands are and he said he didn’t really have any because big corporations have a terrible impact. So even if you’re not telling people how to live their life, the adapt when they spend time with you!

I really liked the topics of this video- after watching and rewatching so many different videos about new sustainable habits, I’m at that stage where if they mention using a reusable bottle, I loose my mind a bit. I am in the process of developing my community outreach ( including contacting businesses and organizations) and I am also starting to realize how detached so many of us have become from community in the US. I’ve started reading “Happy City” and am drawing a lot of sustainable links from it and learning how the cities have changed how we experience our communities over time.

I absolutely love your content! I’ve been following since the dumpster diving days and your videos have improved so much since then. Not to mention, you typically leave your opinion out of things, not saying your opinion isn’t valid, but you educate yourself and let the facts do the talking. It amazing what you are doing with your passion, in fact, it is because of you that I am minimalist and eco conscious. Without your help, I would probably still be over buying, throwing away recyclables and using single use bags. Thank you for what you do!!! 💕

This video was perfect timing for me. My husband likes to use coffee mate creamer in his coffee & I noticed their label wasn’t recyclable so I sent them a message, something I’ve never done before, literally right before I watched this. To my surprise they already have a plan to issue 100% recyclable bottles/labels this year. Not a perfect solution but I’ll take it. Currently working on finding a more eco friendly alternative for him. He tolerates SO MUCH with my determination to be as eco friendly as possible so I’m trying to let the coffee creamer slide… for now 😂

The writing thing can work! I wrote an email to a local farmer who had advertised their fresh sprouts (delivered in zip baggies) as being sustainable (they commented that the bags were recyclable.. which is not actually true in our area). When I gently pointed out their error, they took those false statements off their website and started offering their service (fresh grown sprouts each week) to clients in refillable mason jars. SCORE!!! Another... We sometimes order pizza and they use a little plastic spacer to stop the lid squishing the pizza. We always put 'no plastic spacer' in our order, and always 'refuse' the free dips (I make or buy similar sauces for the family in glass jars if they want dip). They no longer use the spacers at all -- score!!

This video has truly opened my eyes to how to make impactful and advanced changes in my community. I would also be that person who would complain and chat to friends about systematic issues that were prevent my University or even government policies from making better changes for the environment and society. This video helped me realize a great way to be a proactive advocate and hopefully help make effective changes would be to write to these organizations and politicians about these issues that need to be addressed. In one of my classes, I am currently learning how to write a mock letter to a government politician about an environmental issue in the Great Lakes. This learning experience will help me be able to write to future organizations and politicians about environmental issues or system changes that need to be addressed. Thank you so much for this insightful video!

Here’s an idea that I need help on: how do you begin talks with your workplace about sustainability when you are such a small cog in the company? My old precovid job was super supportive of sustainable initiatives, they even had a committee established before I got there. My new place however, has no such thing….or has even mentioned sustainable practices in any way. They are a goods producer that cares so much about sales and it hurts my soul sometimes lol.
