Did you grow up in a household where you had a single parent? A single mom or a single dad? Although having two parents in the picture is definitely beneficial for kids growing up, it’s not always the case. There are many children today who are going through life with just a single parent, and when they reach adulthood, many of them become highly successful, happy individuals. Both negative and positive psychological effects of having a single parent have been studied extensively. In this video, we cover some of those positive and negative consequences. This topic was also highly requested by many of Psych2Go's Community member.

Psych2Go I did, it was pretty strange but I survived. I missed my dad soo much and I didn’t see him for years, then one day he called me at school and asked if I wanted to catch up on the weekend, I waited until I got home and asked my mum, she told me not to and to block him from my phone. I still don’t know why and it’s been 7 years since he rung me.

Sometimes it feels like my mom is a single parent, but she's not, my dad just doesn't really do much, one time somewhat recently, my mom had to go somewhere and she specifically told my dad to have the kids clean the house before she got back, and fully expected my dad to help, (she was gone for a few hours), when she got home she started crying because it looked like not a single person cleaned anything, and that's pretty much all she does, clean a house with 11 occupants, and take care of the kids who aren't able to go to school yet.

Yeah, I mean there are also single parent families which weren't caused by divorce or death, but just because a man or woman was a garbage person and just left the other with a child alone (in the case I am speaking about it was either during dating or because it was one night stand and the other person just didn't want to be involved in the child's life whatsoever, so no marriage involved). So that also should be included.

Yes as I child with a single parent due to death, I have grown so much closer with my dad and my siblings. I have 3 other siblings and we don't have any mental illnesses as far as we know and I think that our family is just as happy as a family with 2 parents. I don't know if these are specifically effects but I thought these facts could be interesting haha.

I grew up with a single mother. They coparented for awhile but eventually it was just my mom raising me and my dad was just a babysitter. My mom worked hard to give me the best life she could. I had so much fun with her, and I have a very strong and special bond with my mom. Some people are jealous of the relationship my mom and I have. I love her to death and shes pushed me through anxiety and depression in the best way, has been there for me and supported me through everything. Shes a very strong person and shes been through quite a lot yet she was able to raise me and be a fucking kickass mother. I'm the first kid she raised, so now that I'm graduating highschool in less than two months shes becoming excited for it. She said shes gonna cry her eyes out and shes gonna be a mess. I'm happy knowing that no matter what she has my back and will be there for me when I need it, but she will be blunt and honest about any mistakes I make. I'm grateful to have a mother like her

I've always seen single parenting more stressful. That parent might work more, struggle to take care of their children and when it gets stressful they may depend on the child too much, or get frustrated with them. I'd definitely prefer parents fighting or depending on eachother rather than one taking out their frustration on their children or depending way too much on them. However, this is only my experience.

Im a bit late 😅, but im just like you, my parents divorced when i was 11 , i grew up with my dad, after my mother literally left me behind (she tried to take me with her just to make my dad angry in some type of revenge) before that she barely gave me any atention (i learned to cook since 8 because of that) , she left me at my sister's home after asking her money for a plane ticket to leave the country, she left without even saying goodbye to me. After that my father raised me while he had to pay a lot of debt left by mother, and barely worked himself to death, so we barely had time together back then, so, i most likely grew up alone, in a country House far from any city or village, all of this while dealing with bullying at school and highschool, since then, It feels like i lost a part of who i am and cant remember what It was, like a numb sensation on my chest, its hard for me to feel joy , and to make bonds with others, most of the time i prefer to be alone because leading with people stresses me TF out, but at the same time i miss having that joy and happiness i had as the extroverted kid i was. But now i dont feel like i can open up to people anymore, It makes me feel frustated and a bit sad.

This only addresses mother who are single because of divorce. It doesn’t address single fathers. It also doesn’t address the situation where there was never a second parent in the picture (like if a person with a uterus decides on IVF, or if a person adopts with the intention of being a single parent). It also ignores the fact that there are two parent households without a man. There are also two parent households without any women as parents.

My mom didnt want me and made that clear to me as a child and my dad was at every event every conference every meeting, he even quit his job so could see him at night before bed, he was my hero and i saw how everyone looked at him. Like he must have been the problem when my mom is the bad one. Single dads are the hero that looks like a villain, even though they never do anything to perpetuate that.

I grew up in a single parent home and had a positive experience, and my mum was a great role model. My mum and I are very close and, although it wasn't as common to see single parent families when I was a kid, I never felt like I was missing out. Another positive is that I think it made me more independent. I could cook meals, do ironing, etc at a young age, because I had to fend for myself when Mum got sick. It would be interesting to see if there's much difference between only-children or multiple children with single parents. Also, I imagine that whether it's a single dad or mum with a boy or a girl would be different too.

Psych2Go well..the father hasn’t been in the picture since he was a baby and his mom never remarried - so for over 20 years it was always the two of them. His mom always worked hard and supports him with going to college etc. I think it was important to her to never give him the feeling of having a disadvantage... And honestly, in some ways, I envy him. They are an even smaller family than I have, but they make the absolute best out of it. His grandma is also in the picture... I think growing up like this he knew that his mom sacrificed a lot to give him everything he needed and more and he never took it for granted. Therefore he became someone who never complains and even when he was a teenager I think he never acted out. He’s a people pleaser and doesn’t like too much attention or craziness. He’s very kind and has stronger connections with his female friends than his male friends. I think he can’t really open up with them. He is also very conscious about money...he therefore is very minimalistic and likes to save. For this reason, he takes his studies very serious - because he wants to make sure everything was worth it in the end and tries to become a teacher. I think he’ll be perfect for that job, because he’s great at explaining, very smart and good with most people. Definitely more patient than me. Meeting his mom for the first time was special to me - because I instantly noticed the parallels. And after all, yes he’s insecure and an introvert in some regards, but he’s perfect for me. I hate men that are overly dominant or act like somehow, working constantly makes up for zero emotional connection. My father is like that and I always knew I didn’t want that in a partner. I wanted someone who is kind and empathetic - and my boyfriend in many ways developed in a healthier way than I did, even if (or maybe even because) his father was a dick. Amen.

I wonder if those studies took into account the income of the parent(s) as a factor. Because most single mothers have to struggle financially and this most definitely has an effect on children. I grew up in a single parent home and admit that in the beginning it was good. However, as I got older things became more strained and my father became an angry man, often blaming us for things he chose to do. One day I had enough and told him to stop putting the blame on us for decisions he made. He sort of got the message. Moreover, he relied on us so much that rather than letting go as most parents do once children reach adulthood, he became more controlling and possessive to the point I literally ran away from home to live in peace. Eventually, I cut off contact with him. It wasn't until my sister gave him an ultimatum that he realised what he had been doing and finally apologised for how he had acted with us. After that, our relationship improved until he passed away. Note: I had cut off contact with my mother at a young age because of how toxic she was. The lies, deception and betrayal were too much for me to bear at a young age, so cutting her out of my life was my only option.

But when someone asks something about my dad then i feel soo good after talking about my dad, i just love to talk about my dad but i barely have any memories but whenever my siblings talk about my dad i get soooo happy. I wish i had my dad for a little more time i don't even remember his voice, but i can't do anything except trying to be happy. I love you Abbu 😭

Its a constant battle isn't it!! I have this push and pull relationship with my mum.. Even though we are "close" but I have built up a lot of resentment towards her growing up because she was soo controlling over my life ( i know she just wants the best for me but still) Not until i moved out of home did i realise how toxic it really was. I struggled with expressing my emotions and speak my mind.. I didnt even know who I was.. Did you ever experience how having a single parent affects building healthy romantic relationships?

@@belkimhoang I'm 18 and didn't have and serious relationship for now but I think it's just because I'm young (maybe I'm wrong though) but I know it's really hard for me to fall in love or literally just have a crush on someone. I relate so much to what you said, it's incredible.

@@ilonaparaveman609 Ahh thanks for sharing! I struggled a lot when I was 18 I think I was craving for that male figure and seek more male friends (it was even difficult since I went to an all girls school too). I would get attached easily when I dated maybe I was just curious and filling a void. Whereas my younger sister might be like you where she didn't have that many crushes or dated much maybe cos of the fear as she was quite guarded. Where do you seek to learn how to communicate or interact with males in your life? I found myself binge watching a lot of dramas and movies to compensate for the lack of "healthy" male figures in my life (even then they were quite idealism). Do you think you would you benefit if there was something out there that would coach how to date/form healthy relationships especially growing up with a single parent? I wish there was something that taught me how to be treated and not put up with things etc

@@belkimhoang I have a lot of trouble interacting with males in general. It makes me really anxious and almost always uncomfortable. I don't have many male friends and we're not even this close. However I get attached to male fictional characters and male singers easily, I look up to them and see some of them as role models. I don't know if a coach or something like that would really help me, but if I have the possibility to know one, well why not.

im a male 19 year old and my dad left at birth... its weird to think that my upbringing would've been different if i had two parents, my mother is disabled so my upbringing was slow. my sister who was 4 years older than me had a teenage pregnancy and after having the child decided to move away and leave me and my mum to raise her, its weird because now shes growing up i am her father figure which brings me joy because i am able to provide her with the thing i was never able to have. i am a very resilient person but everything that has happened in my life has caused depression and loneliness but i keep my chin and and smile the thing i like to think is that although its been hard, it couldve been harder, my mother has always tried the best she possibly can to allow me to move on in life, and my only goal is to make her proud and to provide for her and my niece thank you for listening

I recently found my self with a lot of self sadness, after some thought and a talk from my mom about my recent changes I came to the realization that a large part of it is likely from growing up with 3 sisters and my mom. I build up anger with no way to vent it and never got the proper guidance from a man (Although my father is still present but divorced from my mother). Growing up small made it hard for me to continue sports into highschool, as a result of this I spent my highschool years hanging out with friends and playing lots of videogames, this only furthered my anger and removed a major way to vent anger through sports. It is only now that I am realizing this and really just want to ask for some help, I need to put all my anger somewhere.

Why are you mad in the first place? And why blame your mom and sisters? They are not at fault for you being born shorter or smaller then most men. Not their fault for your school rejecting you. Not their fault for you choosing to play video games and not just choose running as your sport. Not their fault for you not reading your Bible and becoming a great Christian by obedient to Jesus commandments. Not their fault you didn't take psychology to understand your own mind and emotions which can be found on KZfaq by typing in how to handle your emotions or anger. Not their fault. You have choices.

I grew up with a single parent cause my dad died when I was 4 months and I had autism, plus my step-dad was verbally abusive, and my grandmother took custody of me after seeing my step-dad in the middle of his verbal abuse. Even though my mom is working alot, whenever she does visit the house, me and her have a very sweet connection when we talk! Though I do have mild anxiety due to school issues and the constant shouting from my aunt and cousins and mild depression due to threats I sometimes get online, whenever I tell my mom while she's visiting, she always does her best to comfort me and show me its gonna be fine! This video was really informative and well made Psych2go! :)

Having separated parents since I was an infant really effected me. My dad fought my mom to see us, and my mom was always stressed. Yes there was times where I felt loved, but it affects my relationships, my mind, and other significant factors. I suffer through a lot of psychological disorders from trauma of the violence, but I know that one day I am strong and good enough for myself.

It's interesting how single parenthood has become the norm today. Married or not, people should really think about this possibility if they decide to have children. I have both of my parents and they have been married for almost 37 years now; I am very grateful for that and lucky. I couldn't imagine living with only one of them as a child...

Grew up with a single mom, couldn't be happier in my life. I don't really miss my father and actually thank God that we don't live together. But well, maybe that's just me because when I was born they were already separated, so I'm used to only having my mom with me. I think that the problem that most affect kids tough is parents divorcing, and bad parents, not the single parenting by itself. Oh, and also having to BE the single parent is a problem, it's much harder to raise a child if there's only one person taking the responsibilities.

My mom left when I was about 5 and I never got to do anything my friends or other kids got to do (Vacations, traveling out of State, getting help on school work, going to friends houses, help getting over my problems, etc.) You always hear about single mother childhoods but it seems single father homes are overlooked.

I was raised in a single household along side my little brother (were 7 years apart). We had a lot of trials growing up and i do agree with a lot of these things but i see a clear destinction between us. I remember when my parents were together and how abusive it was before they separated while my brother was born around the end of it. I see a big difference in personality between my brother and i.
