Hi! The pork and peas dish is called guisantes (ghee-SAHN-tess), which is Spanish for “peas”. The dish is a comfort food that Filipino moms would cook up when they had hardly any time to cook. Glad you enjoyed it!

The pork and peas dish is a Filipino version of Menudo. It's a pork stew in a tomato sauce with potatoes, carrots, green peas, bell pepper and sometimes with raisins. Tho raisin are controversial kinda like pineapple in a pizza. Either you love it or hate it. 😄 But Filipino Menudo is soo good.

For me, meundo needs to have liver, carrots and potatoes so this looks more like Pork Guisantes (pork & pea stew). But then again, at cafeterias, they simplify so many dishes (kaldereta, afridatda, menudo, mechado) that are actually supposed to be differnt so they end up being very much the same haha.

It’s called “Afritada” in Manila
@angelamapa2529
@angelamapa2529 2 жыл бұрын
Haha the confusion begins:) The dish is technically pork guisantes in Manila and other parts of the Philippines too. But cafeterias have simplified dishes like kaldereta, menudo, afritada, mechado, etc that now many people use those interchangeably. Also, it could depend on how a family cooks things and perhaps also on the region. For me, afritada has to have potatoes and carrots while menudo has to have potatoes, carrots and chunks of liver. Kaldereta should have bell peppers and liver spread as well as potatoes and carrots. Mechado should have a piece of pork fat added into the middle of the beef. It's an interesting discussion and it shows how dishes can evolve over time :)
@angelamapa2529
@angelamapa2529 2 жыл бұрын
@@willieboogie8084 I'm in Manila and I am with you on this. Pork guisantes makes the most sense as it literally is pork (with) peas. Dishes evolve over time so I understand why for some this is menudo, afritada, etc.

Dim Sum, Onigiri, Spam Musubi, and Saimin Noodle, among other foods offered at 7-Eleven stores in Hawaii, come from a factory in Waipahu, owned/operated by Warabeya USA, which is a direct subsidiary of Warabeya Nichiyo Holdings in Japan (わらべや日洋ホールディングス 12% owned by 7-Eleven Japan). Probably that'll explain why the food at 7-Eleven Hawaii tastes much better than other similar retail stores. Warabeya USA also runs a bento restaurant chain called Mamaya in O'ahu.

One hallmark of Phillipino cuisine is that there is always a sour component, which is via vinegar in the adobo you had. Pork and Peas is a local staple comfort food. It is very easy to make and relatively cheap as well which helps with the cost of living in Hawaii. When you make Kalua Pork at home (I use a crock pot) add a little Liquid Smoke: Mesquite flavor to get that smokiness. Just be careful. A few drops will be plenty until you find the perfect amount for your taste. It is very easy to go overboard. One bottle will last a very long time but very worth it.

Spam musubi was invented in the late 1970s in Kauai by a local Japanese woman. Adobo has few ingredients: peppercorns, garlic, shoyu, vinegar, dry bay leaves - that's it. Pork guisantes in some versions include patis (fish sauce).

I do like the pork hash and manapua there and there is a small salmon bento/bowl there and that’s really good! Theres so much good variety at 7-Eleven now. I remember when it was just hot dog, nachos w/ chili and cheese and you could add round onions, jalapeño, or heat up the frozen burrito oh and a super big gulp or slurpee! Now they are trying to make it like Japan’s variety I think and I think they are doing a good job! Mahalo! In Japan we can eat 7-Eleven all the time LOL! Ja mata 👋 aloha 🤙🏽😁

I’ve never had any issues eating their sushi, wraps, sandwiches or salads that they have brought out in the last six years. Even their bakery items are pretty fresh, love that they stock Krispy Kreme donuts too cause there aren’t many of their stores around, some closed down. But I doubt that Aus 7 Elevens will ever be as high quality as 7 Elevens in Japan or even Hawaii.

There is one in Waikiki near Hilton Hawaiian Village. But I think you can get similar food at the ABC stores which are all over Waikiki. Don't know if Shinichi and Satoshi are reading old comments, but if they are, I would suggest a video on ABC store food. As a former Hawaii resident, Shinichi might not know it well, as the stores are located in tourist locations pretty exclusively, but they have good quality in comparison to most American convenience stores and are a good resource for tourists.

Hi Shinchan and Satoshi!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE ALL of your videos!! You are GREAT goodwill ambassadors spreading warmth and aloha no matter where you go. World wide...not just in Hawaii Japan!! 2 quicknotes...pork and peas is usually a Filipino fish called pork gisantes (ghee sahn tes). Tip 2: in the "olden days" kahlua pork/pig was smoked underground, in an imu. But since we don't all have imuss in our back yards to roast pigs, we use Wrights liquid smoke mixed in with shredded braised pork shoulder roast. So much simpler!! It's not the "real" thing, but close enough!! And Satoshi can have his Kailua pork and cabbage in japan!! I hope that this helps...🥰 I'm SO looking forward to more videos from the both of you!! Much aloha!!

Outside of getting a couple of snacks and a Slurpee a good fifteen years ago, those stores never occur to me to have anything I'd want or need. Much too overpriced for many items and the ready made foods didn't look appetizing to me.

I am pretty sure the Ubae brand has a haupia/ube version of that dessert. If so hope you tried it. I go there almost daily and forget what they have sometimes. I do know they make Ube cookies for sure. Aloha

The pork and peas dish is called pork guisantes by Filipinos. I'm surprised you guys didn't get the spam KATSU musubi. A slice of spam, coated in panko and deep fried! I'm sure it's not good for your heart but hey, once in a while....

Hi boys! I could definitely do shoyu tuna makizushi. I still can’t bring myself to try tuna mayo onigiri that everyone around me, always talks about. ☺️ I loved both of your reactions to the Jalapeño pork hash shumai……Definitely something I would like. Oh, and the manapua and everything else you both tried looked so good! King’s Hawaiian down in the South Bay, has a chocolate haupia tart, that is my go-to dessert, every time we go. Thank you for sharing your 7-Eleven finds. I wish we had decent food(s) at our 7-Eleven!!

It's just a mental thing. Think tuna salad sandwich with rice instead of bread. 😊
