From former La Liga, Premier League, and Serie A star Robinho, who was convicted in abstentia by an Italian court in 2017, to Real Madrid transfer target Kylian Mbappe at PSG, HITC Seevens takes a look at a number of players who have been dubbed as the new Pelé over the years.

The problem is nowadays many young footballers are being called "the next Messi" or "the next Pele". Has modern football turned into a case of "two dribbles and you're GOAT?"

Really like the segment about Zico. I'm 100% on board with you about how he would've been perceived world wide If Brasil had won the 1982 World Cup. What he has done in his golden years with Flamengo (and Brasil) is among the greatest peaks a player ever had. Unfourtunately, since the World of Football has this "eurocentric" atitude - more strongly in the last 2/3 decades, thinking that the current gap to South American Football was always this large, when in fact brazilian club football could rival Europe's elite at his time - and Zico had a brief period in italian football, a lot of people can't have the notion that he was a top 20 (for some, even top 10) in the history of the game.
@henriquesoares2343
@henriquesoares2343 2 жыл бұрын
Brazilian teams rivaled Europeans up until mid 2000's. In 1999 Palmeiras lost a match in which they dominated United, at 2000 Vasco beat United and Corithians drew against Real Madrid in their matches at the CWC, in 2006 Internacional beat Barcelona and in 2005 Sao Paulo beat Liverpool. From then on Europe started asserting dominance in the matches they played each other, but before that South American and Brazilian teams did generally better than the Europeans did every time they faced on the field.
@AssassinDK2
@AssassinDK2 2 жыл бұрын
I also think the perception of Zico has to with the lack of knowledge about the South American game back then, from a European perspective. I remember the World Cup's of '78 '82 and '86 and the excitement to see what players Brazil, Argentina, Colombia etc brought, because there was of course no internet back then, and many of the players played in South America, so little was known about them. Cubillas suffered from the same thing. But yes, Zico was a fantastic player. An old school number 10 which we rarely see anymore in the modern game. That assist he creates for Socrates' equaliser in the Brazil v Italy game in '82 is absurdly good. The way he loses his man marker (Gentile, I think) and the weight of pass in behind the defenders is just perfection. He was of course also deadly from free kicks. Another player who I feel never got the credit he deserves, and I don't think he was ever called "the next Pélé", was Juan Roman Riquelme. Again, he played mainly in South America, but he is about the only old school number 10 who has thrived in the modern game. If you look up KZfaq compilations of him, you will get a glimpse of what an incredible player he was. The only player I can compare him to in today's game is Kevin De Bruyne. They're very similar.
@e-money9251
@e-money9251 2 жыл бұрын
@@AssassinDK2 don’t think that riquelme and kdb is similiar really, both are wonderful but kdb is a lot more dynamic than riquelme. I think better comparison for riquelme would be ozil since both are old school no.10 who are brilliant with the ball but not so much without it
@brushark9090

@@henriquesoares2343 tbf, Man Utd treated the 2000 CWC as a vacation, since they were kinda forced to play it and forfeit the FA Cup which they preferred. Also, both in 05' and 06', Liverpool and Barcelona were heavy favourites (not taking away the credit for Inter and São Paulo's wins, just stating how the balance was already shifting heavily towards Europe). I'd say this started along with the Bosman rule which allowed to create the gap and raise it exponentially over each year

In the early 90s, AFC Bournemouth signed Chukki Erribone from I believe a local non league outfit. He played up front and in his debut game scored a 40 yd screamer which squeezed into the top corner. Dean Court went berserk believing they had a real life Roy of The Rovers. I have a feeling he didn’t score again for the 1st team before moving to Havant & Waterlooville but certainly made an even bigger impact whilst on the bench when Cherries were away at Reading. Chukki snuk behind their Mascot - pulled off his head and was chased by the headless mascot . From then on he was revered with chants of “ Chukkis’ Gonna Get You “ 🙄

True, but back in those days the "Brown Bomber" (Joe Louis) was highly regarded as a GOAT in boxing and what Jesse Owens did as an Olympian competing against and beating Hitler's finest athletes at the 1936 Berlin games was highly acknowledged by the Press. Cool video,its a burden to be compared to Pele. Likes of Robinho and Adu were hyped up by the media and Pele himself and their talents did not manifest as promised.But the case of Kylian Mbappe was started by Aserne Wenger in 2017,he boldly stated that Mbappe can be the next Pele and everyone just laughed at him.His bold statements were completely dismissed and forgotten for more than a year until Round of 16 World cup match between France and Argentina.In that match Mpabbe scored twice and after the match,Historians searched the record books and realized he had just equaled a Pele record. So result of that match suddenly shifted attention of the entire Tournament to Mbappe and see if he can go all the way and score in the final like Pele.When France reached the final all eyes were on Mbappe and that Pele record. A few days before the final Mbappe was told by his advisers that should France attain a 2 goal cushion in 2nd half,he must pursue the PELE record. So if he got a chance to shoot from outside the Box,he must take a shot rather than dribble.Coz if he takes the shot and misses,he has nothing to lose,but if the shot goes in then he gets the Pele record for ever. After teams last training session,he stayed behind to practice his shooting from 25 yards out,to get his mind ready to pounce on any shooting chance from that range. As the Final match progressed,France got a 2 goal cushion after the hour mark and Mbappe began to focus on chasing that Pele record. He received a clean pass from Hernandez from 25 yards out and since his mind was so ready for it,he went for his long range shot without hesitation, and the ball went in.So he got that Pele record which changed his life forever. Now he is the most sought after Player,his club PSG turned down a record 200-220 million offer from Madrid,coz they don't want to sell him.His charisma,goal scoring prowess has made him a must for PSG to attempt winning their 1st ever Champions league. At the time of writing,he registered 2 assists in his recent match against City,he seems to be the one who is on the trajectory to getting close to the man himself.We have to wait and see if he gets any better as his aerial skills have improved recently ,he needs to tone down his ego coz that might get in the way of his success. So apart from Mbappe,many children would be advised to shun all Pele comparisons coz they are hard to live up to.

I never heard Freddy Adu get marked the new Pele, the US was just gaga over him because he was 15 when he signed his first professional contract with the DC United, who then proceeded to ruin the poor kid.

As a football fan, first and foremost, I worry a bit about Mbappé. He has seemed a bit off-colour for the last year or so. Maybe he needs a change of scenery because he can't be motivated by Ligue 1 anymore, even if PSG hardly win every title. But compared to his first 3 years at Monaco and PSG he seems to have lost the hunger. I hope he's not burned out or satisfied, because he could become a legend of the game if he just keeps working hard and improving, like Cristiano Ronaldo. Always wanting to improve, be better, work harder.
