Good experiment. My grandfather was a Red Army soldier in the WW2 (8th Guards Army) and served as a machine gunner. He told me that in 1943 he switched to MG-42 - there were enough captured MGs, spare parts for them and ammo. He just loved MG-42: easy to change the overheated barrels, good ammo belts, great firepower, light enough to carry in the hands...

Having 7.92 x 57mm rounds coming at you in a barrage of fire, must have been more than just terrifying. I don't know how these lads got themselves to leave those amphibian vessels in the first place. I would probably have frozen and got shot by at least a few 7.92 x 57 rounds. Death would have occurred practically instantly.

My Father made four landings in the Central Pacific in WW2 (all "in assault" or fist wave.) I asked him what it felt like to be under MG, mortar, artillery fire while approaching the beach. The firing on you starts way further out than you would think. Everybody is scared, everybody. Landing craft get hit and sunk, even LSTs (Landing Ship Tank) and DD's (Destroyers) get popped. You're being fired at by artillery that's been pre-sighted to the beaches as were their mortars too. The Japanese had a lot of self-supporting MG's too, not as fast firing as the MG42 but just as deadly. On the way in ships do get hit. DD's will come will come in close to lend fire support too, thus making themselves more vulnerable to enemy shore batteries. The enemy had had 3" and/or 5" (inch) shore batteries that could reach out and sink both LST's and DD's more than a mile out at sea. Neither of those ship types have any armor protection. You just pray your's isn't one that get's hit. You can't swim back to Hawaii or San Diego so what are gonna do? It's one thing at a time. Hope your landing craft doen't get hit on the way in to the beach after it leaves the LST. Then get out of your landing craft as close to the beach as possible. Anytime you disembark into the water though there's a chance you could do so into an underwater shell hole or crater and being so weighed down with equipment and lead ammunition you just sink to the bottom. That was a worry. The closer the landing craft get to shore and start unloading the troops the more the enemy equivilant to our Browning 1919 .30 cal qqMGs, 105mm and 155mm Howitzers increase their fire on those presighted beaches then packed with unloading infantry. The Germans and Japaese both used this same tactic. Then there's finding cover, all while under the same heavy fire. It sounded nasty to me when I first heard what it was like and it doesn't sound any better or easier now. I guess when you're a 19 year Marine or soldier (in the case of Normandy and other European invasion spots) you just put your head down and try to keep moving foward, while listening for orders (of course), the first 15 mins of saving Private Ryan were what I would imagine seeing on Omaha Beach.

To the Japanese weapons, yes this is true. American propaganda is guilty of lying about Japanese weaponry effectiveness. But To the German MG42? No. I have never seen WW2 propaganda stating the MG42 of being “not as effective”. I’ve seen WW2 videos clearly explaining the high rate of fire, and psychological effects it has against American soldiers, when fired upon. The video demonstrated possible ways to take out an MG42 gunner position, but never states this weapon is “ineffective”. It clearly states how devastating and powerful the Hitler buzz saw is. Americans were clearly aware of how powerful German weapons and engineering were at the time. So I’m sorry, I don’t buy this argument. The Japanese were a different story. Americans were extremely biased against them because of Pearl Harbor. So it was normal for them to down play anything the Japanese had. However, to be fair, there is SOME truth to this bias, but not because of what you may think. The Japanese had effective weapons, but they lacked natural resources in their mainland nation. And as the Japanese kept loosing resources and supplies, (after their navy was destroyed and their factories bombed continuously), the quality of their weapons and equipment lowered throughout the years, based on these factors.

There was a book written by the one combat veteran with experience operating the MG 42, on Omaha beach I believe. The writer claims the other gunners were inexperienced and abandoned their positions early in the battle while he focused on the landing craft when the doors dropped. He claims to have killed at least five thousand men himself. Probably true considering. Can't be disproven either. "They just kept sending more" He had plenty of barrel swaps, an assist gunner and a spare MG 42 to switch to in the bunker to keep the other from melting despite the barrel swaps. Quite the fish story but it was probably true.

@@VinhTran-lu6gm the psychological and the suppresssing effect on troop movement is an effect very well documented since the invention of machine guns and their appearance on the battlefield. From there came the term teached in squad tactics called "supression fire" and as a former soldier you most certainly will get or got that teachings with basic classes in one form or another, followed buy practical drills. A similar effect can be witnessed in civil life when you hear a "supposed gunshot" out of a sudden some tend to duck down, even when its just a powerfull car with a modified muffler. Like mines make people loose limbs and bombs can destroy entire blocks.. thats common knowlege and I can tell that without being torn to pieces or stepped onto a anti personal mine.

On the night of March 18, he was badly wounded when a tossed grenade hit a tree, bounced back, and exploded nearby. “I saw a blast and felt a searing - hot pain in my leg, ripping my flesh open,” Dole recalled. “It was just a surface wound from the grenade fragments, but it hurt like crazy.” “I felt a sting, as something hot, something terribly powerful crashed into my upper back behind my right shoulder,” Dole later recalled. “I’d often been hit in the back by a hard-charging linebacker when I’d caught a football in high school or college. Occasionally, I’d been thrown to the ground and stomped on by a couple of college linemen after making a catch. I remember my grandfather telling me stories about the Jerry's and how Hitlers buzz saw and how you stood no chance against it in the open but there was another name that MG had that was the devils paintbrush and if you were caught out in the open. then the devils paintbrush would most certainly get you and that there would not be enough of you left to mail home. The MG struck fear into some G.I s he would tell me how they wait for the Jerry's to reload and swap out barrels before they could return fire or frag them. Our grandfathers fought one of the most brutal wars in American history and overcame against insurmountable odds.

What is even crazier is that the barrel change on an MG-42 is very fast. Also if the belts have starter tabs reloading takes only seconds. I have an MG-34 and barrel change is a bit slower.

Another idea, but harder to set up, in the army we had training films showing how to set up an MG for indirect ambush. At say 2 or 4 km you would mount a high angle and zero to land in BC a terrain pinch point. So when enemy is spotted you open fire and the bullets start landing all over the place . Low in energy but lethal. The films showed balloons on sticks and bullets scattering over say a 15 meter circle with MG tight on the pintle mount. The fast mg 42 much better at this.

From the 1960s onwards the MG42 appeared on tanks, having not done so during the war. The MG3A1 was the specific variant to be used as a coaxial tank gun. In the reality, machine gunners have fired very rarely a complete belt "in one go" - the barrel gets overheated dramatically and gets just destroyed. Short bursts of 5 to 10 rounds were common. I have heard from German veterans that in 1944-1945 it was even prohibited for them to fire long bursts out of MG-42 because ammo was not enough - the production rates could not keep up with the needs of the front troops.

The German soldiers gave the MG 42 nicknames such as “Hitler saw”, “Singing saw” or “Bone saw”. The term “Hitler scythe” is also often found, which arises from the similarities between the shooting technique used by the machine gunners and the swinging movement of the harvesting tool when it is used. Furthermore, the term “Hitler violin” also circulated based on the “Stalin organ”. The term “Hitler's Buzzsaw” for the MG 42 is still known today among the American population. (Wikipedia)

I've seen U.S. Army training films from 1943 or 44 where the instructor told the students not to fear the MG 42 and that it was overrated as a weapon.

How frequently did the barrel need to be swapped out on these guns? Seeing how quickly they eat up their ammunition, over heating must’ve been a concern. Nice video by the way.

Given the body count the USSR stacked it's not even a question. There's places in Russia that you cannot turn a shovel without bringing up bones.

5:52 Camouflage was invented by French in 1914, not German (they used it since 1916, while french used them to camouflage artillery first in 1914). It's actually a french word and there was a whole section dedicated to that. Great vid' :)
