I'M THRILLED TO PRESENT my new personalized vocal program SINGING IGNITION!
www.singingignition.com
SINGING IGNITION is a revolutionary self-study singing program that lets you practice techniques and exercises customized for you...wherever and whenever you want!
The basic problem with a video or audio recording, whether on KZfaq or a self-study course, is it can’t give you the valuable feedback you need! They can’t determine what your voice specifically needs, curate the exercises that will work for you, and then adjust the exercises according to how your voice reacts.
That’s what a good voice teacher does. They tailor the content of their lessons to your needs.
But maybe you aren’t ready to commit to regular lessons. Or maybe you just can’t afford a voice teacher right now. Times are tough!
So you're stuck either booking a voice teacher, which can get expensive and has limited hours. Or you are forced to use a self-study course that can’t really give you the feedback you need to excel...
...and maybe you just don't feel comfortable quite yet, sharing your talent with anyone else!
Finally, all of this has been solved by the revolutionary new system SINGING IGNITION!
LEARN MORE and START YOUR 14-DAY TRIAL:

I hit some of those female notes, but the thing is, my mix voice is still weak, so all i have to do is practice more and have my mixed voice some weight in it and volume I really appreciate your exercise!☺️😩 I'm so thankful for this! It took me 20 minutes of the mum-mum excercise and suddenly my mix got very consistent and strong. I'm completely blown away. I've tried all kinds of mixing excercised I've found online to try and make it stronger for months. Maybe it has developed over time as I've tried it all but nothing ever had such a HUGE effect so quickly! I'm so grateful to you coach Spencer! Thank you ❤

@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio I'm working on getting it to sound better and make it more even. The hardest part is surprisingly (to me at least) to mix at my bridge at around E4-F#4. I also realized this is only the beginning because I don't really know how to apply this new thing to my actual singing yet :D
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 жыл бұрын
That doesn't surprise me. Most guys struggle at their 1st bridge (passage) E4-G4. So be patient with yourself and keep practicing. Eventually, you will want to apply this to songs, but it does take time.

The "Nay" sounds like the word "Nej" in Swedish, which means "No", so it was quite fun to do that one. I usually use the same sounding Nej/Nay when I am telling my cat that she's doing something wrong, like walking on the dining table and then she know it means no. So it had a double comical effect on me, which is good for learning.

Well my mix is weird it’s light but I can do like Patti labella and slide up from chest voice and it sounds more powerful sometimes I can belt in headier part and sometimes it’s be chest and sometimes it just mix. I definitely need work on my headvoice the higher I can sing in headvoice the higher I can go in mix I just need to improve it because belting in it is kinda tricky unless I do lightly but I definitely say Gee Gee excersise it’s bring more of my headvoice range and mum cry which really showing how my mix should sound and first excersise was really working my break helping me sustain more in mix.

It's quite common for the GEE exercise to develop head voice more, and then for MUM with a cry to bring in more depth and mix into the high notes. Keep in mind that there are several ways to belt, including a head belt, a mix belt, and a chest belt. Some can be harder on the voice than others, depending how they're done. So always make sure you find balance and ease first at a medium volume, and don't confuse pressure with power. All the best in your singing journey!

Yes, that is a great approach to start on a lighter coordination in your head voice and slowly thicken up as you descend. Then eventually try to reverse the process as you ascend.

Really enjoyed the video! One question, is it normal to feel a bit of resonance on the nose or is it different for everyone?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's not abnormal to feel some vibration on the bridge of your nose or in the general facial region, but everyone does feel singing differently. However, this isn't resonance. Resonance is the compounding sound waves that form inside your throat and mouth, and the vibrations we might feel in the chest, skull, face, etc are a result of the resonance. Sometimes singers try to push sound into their nose, thinking they are producing "forward" resonance, but usually this will make things worse.

The nay and bratty nay works best for me 🤗 thank you so much!!! Also a question. Should I stop once it gets deep enough that I drop in to chest voice even though I can still hit the notes? Or should I just keep it going? I’m looking just to take this exercise to JUST focus on mixed. Should I just drop off? ~Thx
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. Do you mean, should you stop as the key of the scale is modulating downward, and you feel more of the notes going back into your chest voice? Are you female? Remember that your mixed voice is dependent on a solid, established chest voice so don't exclusively sing the notes that land in your mixed voice range or that range could start to weaken and get wispy.

I just subscripted! Your comment @ 2:20 " no pain, no gain doesn't not apply" is legit! All those other vocal trainers make you do warm ups that start or rundown scales without letting people know they need only come in and out where their voice is comfortable. Many people just do the entire exercise and don't realize it can sometimes cause vocal problems in the long run. Great advice 🤙🏼

This is the downside of learning about singing from a video: the video can't tell you whether you're doing the exercises correctly like a teacher would. Still I create videos to give more information to people interested in singing, but ultimately, you will need to find an experienced teacher to help you really improve. If you don't have a teacher , my studio is offering a 20-min trial Skype voice lesson for $15. Then you can get feedback from a teacher to know whether you are getting into your mix voice or not. Once you know what the sound and feeling is, you will be able to sing along with exercise videos with more awareness of what is working and what isn't.

i think i have a volume problem and I've always sang too loud and wrecked my voice. Finding if i just let the sound come out on its own more it sounds a bit dry and airy but definitely less strain
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 жыл бұрын
You are not alone. Many singers use volume to change pitch, specifically they get louder for high note, squeezing their vocal cords together and driving a lot of air pressure against them to raise the pitch. Temporarily, using a bit of a breathier sound can help you learn how to allow your voice to make pitch adjustments without all the "push." Later you will want to practice all your scales at a medium volume, similar to comfortable speaking. Then from there you can always increase or diminish volume from intention, not out of need.

I'm happy you were able to find your mix over a large range. That's exciting! Developing power in your mix without pushing or straining takes a lot of training, guidance, and practice. Most people won't develop it through a tips video. Think of it this way: how many people will get big muscles through watching a weight lifting video. It takes disciplined work and training. If you want to get personal guidance about this, I suggest you book a 20-min trial online lesson with my studio: spencerwelch.com/ko-trial-com

I can go from my absolute highest "falsetto" note and then go down without breaking to my lowest chest note. Is that mixing? It´s kinda breathy like falsetto but I can still somehow feel some sort of connection that I dont feel when I do falsetto. I just recently managed going between registers without breaking thanks to one video of yours and I´m wondering if i´ve just learnt to go between registers without a break or actually mixing or if its maybe even the same thing?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 4 жыл бұрын
It's hard to know what you're actually doing without working with you, since talking about sound is so vague. But if you're able to connect to your chest voice as you descend, then it isn't falsetto. But if it's breathy it might not be developed enough yet to qualify as a mix voice, maybe more like a head voice that is taken down a little low. Either way, it sounds like progress, since you could slowly add to that quality to build into a mix voice.

Have you tried my video "How to Erase Your Break"? I have descending "creaky door" exercises in there that could develop what you're doing, getting your vocal cords together more, and taking away the breathiness. Here it is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f8WnaJdqm5yaomQ.html

Explain: Your gee exercise is a deeper larynx position which musical theater doesn't like very much, and the bratty nei seems very forward and higher larynx position. Bratty nei can tire the throat singing high with a high larynx.How do the 2 opposite exercises help the same problem?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 5 жыл бұрын
You make a couple points, so I will address them separately. 1) "musical theater doesn't like [the lowered larynx sound] very much" - This is a workout for the voice, so I am not as concerned about different vocal genres and what sound qualities are preferred. The purpose of this workout is to develop functional connection, freedom, range, and flexibility in the instrument. Then the singer can choose to apply this flexibility to whichever style they want. It is like tuning a piano, and then the artist can decide whether they will play jazz, classical, or rock on that piano.
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 5 жыл бұрын
2) Singing with a high larynx CAN tire the throat, depending which high larynx condition is being used. However, it doesn't have to tire it if the supraglottal benefits of twang are used along with a thinner vocal fold production. That is very different from singing with a high larynx due to pressed phonation and a lot of subglottal air pressure from below. Still please remember that I stated two things in the video: this is a temporary voice quality which we only do to condition and coordinate the voice (we won't be performing on a high larynx for long amounts of time) and if the student does it incorrectly so that the throat begins to tire, they should stop immediately.
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 5 жыл бұрын
3) How can "two opposite exercises", the hooty GEE and the bratty NAY, both help the same problem? First, they don't do exactly the same thing, which is why I put them in the order in which they appear. But ultimately, both exercises (in different ways) assist the student to thin out as they ascend in pitch. The hooty quality lowers the larynx on an EE vowel, which can loosen over-adduction and drive the singer's voice further into head voice. The bratty NAY assists the singer who feels they must go into falsetto above their chest voice range. This voice quality assists moderate adduction of the thinner vocal folds. If you are a voice teacher and would like to study more about the science and the functional logic behind these exercises, I encourage you to look into our certification process at vocaladvancement.com, where I am the Director of Education and design the curriculum.

I have taught voice worldwide and my students have won prizes in the Metropolitan Opera Competition including 1st prize. I am now teaching more and more musical theatre and other genres which use a chest or belt much higher than classical singers do.I do not like to make the voice go higher in chest than is comfortable, but the students all want to take it up to the maximum.That is the dilemma.
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Oh congratulations on your students' successes! I understand your concerns, since I share them when it comes to students wanting to belt chest up high. This is why I encourage them to develop a mix voice for these high notes that they can belt if the occasion calls for it. Think of it somewhat similar to the coordination you develop in operatic tenors when they sing F4 and above in voce piena in testa. Except you develop this in your sopranos as well, and with vowels a little brighter. The larynx should still be settled but doesn't have to be as low as classical. Closer to the posture of speech.
