Not sure anyone would buy a ticket for this one. Good you have it back at last. Funnily enough we had a Sportage before our 3.0 D5 and it was a no trouble vehicle. Although didn’t have the panache of the 5. Unfortunately our sensors have decided to pack up so it’s back in to Landrover on the 26th. It does make me think if we really did do the right thing trading up to the D5. I did take on board all you said about the 2.0 and the later digital dash model. Fantastic when working but you do fall out of love with them when things go wrong!!

My wife and I went to Marshalls to test drive the new Defender 110. We were shown a demonstrator, and we when started the ignition the main display screen wouldn’t work - completely blank. The salesman just explained it away as a niggle - not my idea of a niggle.. needless to say we didn’t buy one.

I’ve just bought a 21 reg Discovery after 3 years driving a Mercedes Vito, had a new 17 reg Discovery until Covid. My first Discovery I had for 4 years the only problem I had was a leaking windscreen which was fixed under warranty. Once you’ve driven a Discovery other cars don’t compare, the Defender was nice but the 21 reg was about 8 to 10k more with a 2lt engine and when I sat in both cars the Discovery to me seemed more luxurious. It’s also had the bigger Pivi Pro screen we’re most ot the 21 reg Defender has the smaller Pivi Pro screen. My Discovery also has the new straight 6v3lt engine which is silky smooth. The car came with 12 months warranty, I bought 12 months and managed to get any extra 12 months from the Land Rover dealer making it a 3 year warranty which is a must with Land Rover.

I think a 2 litre engine has to work too hard in a big body like a Discovery 5. A 3 litre would be better suited, although LR's 3 litre is not without its problems too (snapped crankshafts for example). In truth, most larger SUV's give the same sense of space and relaxed long distance cruising, although I wouldn't include a Sportage in that description (good though it is). I think your final summary is spot-on. You have tried your best to remain loyal to the brand, but this feels like the right time to step away and let LR sort their numerous issues out on other guinea pigs.

I bought an approved used RR Sport, numerous problems (cured by a TCM software update that I was surprised was not done before sale), decided the service sucked every time so when I got it back took it straight to Lexus and traded it in. Nothing in comparison to your issues, but I wasn't interested in being mucked around and after 18 months of trouble free Lexus motoring, nothing would induce me to buy another modern Land Rover product. My Defender Td5 on the other hand, love it to bits and have an excellent independent for when things go wrong.

Hey. Cars are cars. Anything you buy, regardless of make, can let you down. The best advice is, buy the car that makes you feel good, that you enjoy driving. Look after it and it will look after you. Yes, for me that's a Range Rover but if you fancy something else, go for it. If you really hate maintenance costs, buy a bicycle.

Despite what some say, you are not completely mad! Land Rover do make absolutely excellent cars, especially the Discovery. If only they could build them a bit more robustly. Surely they must be working on that for the next iteration. I get that they are complicated beasts and that I guess inevitably means there's more to go wrong. But you've done the Discovery thing (for now anyway) and I'll be interested to see what you replace it with. When I parted with my Disco, I have to admit I was a bit sad. Which is in itself probably a bit sad. But they do get under your skin (in more ways than one).

Honestly land rover is so weird. I had a discovery 4 for 7 years, owned it from new and put 200.000 miles on it before the engine finally blew up. But in the 7 years of owning that vehicle I never really had any major breakdowns, except for the occasional EGR valve. Then I upgraded into a brand new 2019 discovery 5 with the 3L diesel engine and put nearly 170.000 miles on that with not one issue. No leaking sunroof/windscreen, no engine failure, absolutely nothing. And now I drive a facelifted 2024 discovery 5 with the D300 engine but I've only had that for a few months now so nothing to report there. I also should add that all these miles are very hard miles on the car. I own a farm and pull trailers with seeds around with the car, often loaded to 3500/4000 kg. So if you'd ask me, no better car than a discovery 5, however I've heard horror stories with the Range rover sport as well. A friend of mine owns a 2016 RR sport with the 3L diesel and he is currently on his 4th engine with only 100.000 miles on the clock. 1st engine blew at 60.000 miles... So a weird thing definitely and always a gamble with these cars I think. I guess I've just gotten lucky up until now, very lucky...

wow thats some milage in such a short space of time, me personally if buying a car that big I would always always buy a 3 ltr and over , I own the evoque with the 2 ltr diesel ( 180 bhp version ) and is just right for the size , put a small engine in a heavy car and all it will do is strain the engine and all the components added on to it. Unfortunately/maybe a good thing my car demands a service twice a year due to oil dilution so the service light comes on early, not to bad a use a very good local garage to do these oil and filter changes at half the price and then will use LR for a service every now and then to get into the system for service history. Its a shame people rely on these service history instead of having receipts from a very good local garage.

@@josephgittos3787I must admit I always service my cars at a JLR dealer. It comes with its costs but I think it's just better, also for the warranty, since I always opt for the extended warranty, just to be sure. And yeah I do a lot of miles every year. I live in Belgium and we farm about 1000 acres, but the fields are pretty far spread, so cropscouting every day over 1000 acres means I drive a lot of miles on a day-to-day basis, and even more impressively, a good chunk of those miles are done with a trailer. But I do indeed think you should always opt for a 3L engine, the 2L are just to small and I have heard so many horror stories with the 2L engine, whereas it would seem that the 3L engines are way more reliable. On a side note, the same friend of mine that has the RR sport, also has a discovery 3 that he has owned from new. It has the 3L diesel engine (I'm not sure if they were available with a 3L or a 2.8L but I know he has the big diesel) and he has over 260.000 miles on the clock, still with the original engine and trans!! I think that's quite impressive

Have had very similar issues - fixed the balancer shaft, windscreen leak, dropping windows etc....thankfully all under warranty. Our plan was to make sure we have a LR warranty and run it for a few more years - nothing seems to come close in terms of comfort/size. Residuals being impacted by insurance issues so didn't make financial sense for us to change currently

I’d keep it. It’s had lots invested in it so it should drive good for some time. As you say, they are amazing when they work. I would be tempted to go to an independent specialist rather than the main dealers when you’re outside warranty. The new Defender seems a lot more robust than the Disco too, that would be the other option.

Just to add some perspective here; in USA Range Rover are currently the FASTEST SELLING CAR … stats includes saloons and pickups. Average “sticker price” is $145k. I’m seeing a ton of Defenders on the road, so the smooth Tonka Toy looks with plush interior is appealing to many. I suspect that is why spare parts are hard to come by in Europe since all wiring looms, suspension parts, etc are being fitted to new cars as it’s a bigger money spinner for JLR. My own RR Vogue was ordered Feb 23 and is due June 24 (in U.K.) having said that, in U.K. I’m seeing discounts in auto trader as I guess people are cancelling orders ‘cos of insurance issue…

I ve been dying to get a pre owned Disco 5 in India. But the LR5 is quite uncommon here in India as most of the people for that price only get a RR for its luxury tag. Here it's super expensive due to the taxes. A pre owned LR5 that I can hardly find here comes for 60k Pounds. Would you recommend a Discovery Sports Model that has run around 90000 kms/56k miles which ll cost around 35k pounds in India? The parent company of JLR is now an Indian company by the name Tata which is known for SUVs and heavy vehicles. Recently launched the Facelifted Safari and the Harrier, based on the LR platform with premium features in the mid segment. I can't quite come to like a SUV with Curves. I love the boxy designs of the Discoveries. I guess only Disco lovers will understand the attachment to these cars which can't be compared to an Audi or a BMW. Would be sad to see you part ways from the Disco 5. But would be exciting to check the Disco 6 when it ll come. Thank you so much to you posting regular updates on your vehicle.
