you can play quieter without the airiness, it depends on if your mouth piece is opened or closed. with closed mouthpieces you don't need much air for good tone so it's really good for beginners, but with open mouthpieces you need strong consistent air through the instrument and a steady embouchre. I'm telling you this as a bass clarinetist.
@pinecow
@pinecow Жыл бұрын
I hate advice like this. (No hate ofc, just avoid it in the future). Even though you are right, it's just not helpful, and it's not why he sounds airy. Telling a beginner that it's their mouthpiece's fault is like telling a toddler that just learned to walk that they can't run fast because of their shoes.

ITS NOT JUST ABOUT MORE AIR, TRY RAISING THE BACK OF YOUR TONGUE TO INCREASE THE AIR SPEED. THIS MAY SOUND LIKE IT WOULDNT WORK, BUT IT CAUSES THE AIR TO BE REDIRECTED AND FORCES THROUGH A SMALLER OPENING.

So I've played the bass clarinet for 8 years and at a competition a judge came on stage and told me he wanted me to play as loud as the tuba player and i actually managed it. But i will say this was AFTER i self taught myself to play the Baritone Saxophone which requires A LOT more air. After playing the Bari now for three years for Jazz Band. (marching with it for two) i am A LOT better at the Bass Clarinet and can be A LOT louder. It just takes work. (But another thing is Bass Clarinets just don't really project...well when marching which i did march with one for two years but on stage you should be fine. At the time of writing this I'm a senior in highschool and just had a Christmas Concert at my school and had a solo on the Bass clarinet which was heard very well.) Lots of Love to any and all Bass Clarinet players!!! ❤❤❤ Ps. Go BARI as well!!

To those saying he needs more air… no. What he needs is probably a softer reed, maybe even a different cut, maybe more mouthpiece in the mouth, probably a softer embouchure. Playing with more air just creates squeaking when the improper equipment or technique is used. Not saying more air won’t benefit at all, but that’ll only get you so far

as a fellow bass clarinetist, when you are getting used to playing it your lungs must adapt to all that air being needed. I played clarinet for 3 years before switching to bass clarinet and now i can’t go back because my lungs have gotten so used to bass clarinet. So just keep practicing and you’ll get there! also, i’ve found it easier to play with a neck strap rather than a stand

Coming from another bass clarinetist, it Sounds great. Three pointers, 1. Keep your bottom lip tucked in a little more, 2. to me - it sounds like your reed may be too hard/new. for the bass clarinet, i like to use a really fine grit sandpaper on my new reeds if they are too hard! it find it easier to play softer on a thinner reed! best of luck with your playing
