You missed stainless steel. After discarding random new experimental alloys into a rusting pile of them one remained shiny so stood out. A casual lick test proved it to have no metalic flavour like all the other alloys did.... which meant it didn't tarnish and remains the perfect thing for making cutlery! Sometimes it is best to be tasteless.

Because licking the science is actually pretty handy sometimes. Licking the lab rocks was expected in my college geology class. Easiest way to identify the salt crystal. Though safety is important. We often used a very diluted hydrochloric acid on the same rocks. It is also salty. The tip of my tongue was numb the rest of the day. Did that stop me from tasting the science? Nope, but I was much better about washing them before hand.

Archaeologists also do the 'lick test'. I was on an excavation in my second year of university and a fellow student thought they'd found a piece of animal bone. We all crowded around because it was the first exciting find, and to everyone's horror... You guessed it, our professor licked it and said "Yep, it's bone", with a smile. I've seen her tasting soil too, because we need to find the exact texture and composition of the soil we find an artefact in, and tasting it is a quick and easy way to figure out the texture (or so I'm told).

in all fairness though, isn't it sometimes said that the reason young kids put stuff in their mouths so often is that they're trying to learn about their environment that way? if so, i guess there's some biological instinct to determine some measure of chemical properties that way via our chemical senses, even if our collective knowledge says otherwise
@GoldSrc_

Little kids are all scientists, whether is putting random things into their mouth or making a mess, I see those things as experiments. But then you have the parents who get mad when that happens, and their curiosity most of the time dies, sad.
