Today I’m offering up some serious Scandinavia appreciation, all the things I love about the cosy simple, highly aesthetic Nordic lifestyle, and some of the things I miss most about Sweden, you know, as a happily relocated londoner. If you’ve ever felt an itch to visit Scandinavia or learn more about the cosy lifestyle, then this video will probably be up your street. Because you know, in those studies they make every year, you know the lists of like the happiest people on earth, scandis are always at the top. Even though we scandis might quite often seem to be a bit on the grumpy side if you ask me.
I talk about:
- seasonal living
- the scandinavian aesthetic
- scandinavian fashion
- scandinavian interior design
- why lighting is important in a home
- how to make your home cosy
- why sweden is a feminist society
- why it’s important to make an effort
- the happiest country in the world
- financial security
- hygge

You are so lucky to have been born in Sweden. I live in Vancouver ,Canada and life here is very HARD. There is a huge gap between the rich and poor. The middle class is dead. The only benefit we have from the system here is health care. Otherwise, education is so utterly expensive and beyond the reach of even some middle-class children. When you say someone working in a shop makes enough to afford to live reasonably, I am shocked. The wage gaps are huge here--with CEOs making ridiculous amounts of money. Thanks for your insight to another more civilized country.

Hi, I used to live in Vancouver and I loved it, but because of the cost of living (esp. rent) I moved back to my native Québec because it is more affordable to me and I have some family here, but I am not happy. I identify more with the English culture.

Heating is so expensive. I don’t even live in a place super cold, but we have to keep the thermostat at 60 and bundle up in our own home. That’s what bothers me about winter…. I’m always cold because it costs so much to heat a home. It’s fine at first but by March I start losing my mind and wondering if I will ever feel warm again lol

You are so lucky to live in Canada! In Ukraine, everything is so expensive,5 person family (2adults,2children and 1 granny)is leaving in a rent 25m flat, the gap between rich and poor is huge!old people after working whole life have no money to buy food for themselves, due to inflation.

I'm sorry life is feeling so tough for you in Vancouver, and I understand. I lived in Vancouver then Victoria (Canada) for 7 years and by the time we moved it did feel unsustainable for economic, cultural and even political reasons (NDP and local council ultimately not delivering on the society I'd like to live in). Although we supposedly have 'health care' in Canada, no one in either BC or AB where I now am can find a family doctor. I too got a bit nostalgic listening to Jenny. We used to have--or were on track to have--some of that in Canada, and the promise seems to have disappeared on the wind.

On a call I was on recently with American poets, poet Jane Hirshfield said (paraphrasing) 'beauty is an ally through transition.' I've long-since ceased with the puritan north american idea that giving attention to aesthetics is self-indulgent. It's an integral and wholesome part of my life, whether my home, clothing, or natural surroundings.

I live in the USA. Our middle class is shrinking. I am fortunate, I am retired and have a small inheritance that should sustain me and I am more than happy to help my kids when they need it. All the years I was working, and my kids were little, there was no money stability. I appreciate everything I have now .(Definitely Team Scandi!)

im from australia, where there was barely EVER a reason to feel cosy. the extreme seasons are part of the reason why i've never been happier than here in canada now (ive been here for about 6 years). it really is a way of life, you always have something to look forward to, and it really helps set the scene to feel the distinct changes in your life - things really don't ever stay the same, and it's both cosy and exciting.

As a Finn growing up in Canada, I took it for granted that you change your curtains bedding etc, when going from warmer to colder season and vice versa. And of course we always had candles. I love living in Canada but still cannot get use to how North Americans wear their outdoor shoes inside 😊 all those hand knitted and crocheted slippers and socks are part of winter.

Here in Brazil we do not feel all the seasons pass it's only hot, extreme hot and freezing cold (20ºc) at least for Rio de Janeiro people. We like to go to restaurants because we usually have big families and nobody wants to wash the dishes at the end of a party. The issue that got me is finance stability because, girl... we don't have that here. I wish we could feed our people and pay reasonable salaries so as the population can have leisure time and 3 meals on their table.

I resonate so much with this channel - I am a minimalist, vegan, and feminist and I totally agree with every sentiment expressed by Jenny about aesthetic, coziness, comfort and confidence. This video in particular really struck a chord with me. I am an US citizen (and a UK citizen) in my 50's. Being a teen in the 1980s and a young adult in the 1990s I felt empowered as a woman, and although there were still challenges for women, I always thought, "Oh, we've got this." Fast forward to today, and now I look at Scandinavian countries with such envy. Not jealousy, because I can visit there anytime. When Jen talks about living in a feminist country - I kind of feel sentimental and nostalgic... like, "Oh yeah, I remember having a glimpse of that feeling. It was so nice." I am so pleased that there are still places in the world that continue to have that undercurrent of respect and equality. P.S. Intimate dinner parties FTW!

I lived in Copenhagen for a year and have worked in Greenland with Scandinavian team members for another ... five. I love the lifestyle in Scandinavia for all the things you mentioned here. Another point: even in the cities, people seem more active and outdoorsy than many cities elsewhere in the world. I think it ties in with the strong seasonality you mentioned - not shutting out the world outside but adapting our lives to it. I would love to spend some time living in Norway - it reminds me in so many ways of the good parts of my home (west coast Canada) with the perks of being in Europe. But... I also lived and studied in the UK for six years and I totally get the London attraction. ;)

@@anasam2258 Thanks! I'm a geologist, so in the UK and Denmark I was studying and then I worked five seasons in Greenland. I've worked a few seasons in Arctic Canada as well but have spent about ten years living in Australia too. It has it downsides, but geology can be a great career for seeing some truly amazing (and remote!) places. There aren't many countries in which one of my good friends/colleagues HASN'T worked!

I'm Canadian too and where i live in the mountains it's pretty much 6-7 months of winter, or winter-ish. I do have a routine for each changing of the seasons marked by solstices and equinoxes, and even each quarter-festival mark in between (about every 8 weeks). Which helps to lean into winter, too. I feel it really makes a difference.

I love your idea to place a mirror to reflect the sunbeams! And I love Nordic esthetics in general. Esthetics make the world a prettier, cozier place, thanks to artists and other creatives mankind can enjoy all the beauty live has to give. I live in Spain, in the northern part near the Pyrenees, but was born in The Netherlands where the weather can be gloomy and the sun is pretty low on the horizon in the winter. In Dutch, we call hygge "gezellig" which is not translatable to Spanish, but I made sure to bring it into our Spanish home anyway 🙂

I think Finland has always been poorest of the nordics, so our perks have never been quite at the same level, but free healthcare and education are a must for a good and stable society imo. And I think those are values that come as a given when you have a more feminist society. I'm so grateful I was born in Finland, most other places I would not be alive today. Unfortunately Finland has been taken too many notes from the US, our working conditions are getting worse, prices keep going up, but the wages don't follow. And especially now with the current rightwing government, those of us who're worse off will be struggling even more. So while yes, the wage gap is not as huge as in other parts of the world, the situation is getting worse. During the pandemic there was a huge jump and the rift just keeps on widening. It seems that the rightwing facist mentality is taking over the world, and I really just hope we can turn this trend around before it's too late and they destroy everything that is precious in this world. One of the reasons I'm all for citizenship pay, or whatever it's called in english. With automation and AI, there is no reason to demand 40h/work weeks of anyone. Everyone should do less work and have more financial stability. It's completely accessible, it's a political choise to not serve the people, and only serve the 1%. But the rightwing populists have harnessed fear, fooling people into thinking there's no other way.

Aesthetics can really change a home - make an affordable dorm seem cozy or can make an expensive house look overdone, it’s all in styling. Lol, I just wish I could get my husband to stop turning on the overhead lights 🤦🏻‍♀️ I prefer cozy dinner parties but it’s hard to create menus these days with friends and family who have diverse food preferences and eating needs :) Your meals always look AMAZING. If you’re trying to decide on content for future videos, some food videos with recipes would be fantastic!

The exception is the kitchen bench while I'm cooking but even then we have warm lighting. We have a couple of salt lamps and they exude the perfect amount cozy lightning in the space. Added some candles and warming floor lamps as we're good to go. Thanks Jenny. xx

That financial security is so huge. I'm so glad you included it. Money is such a huge stressor for so many people. And insecurity and stress hinder one being the best and kindest you can be. I have often thought that one of the fastest ways to get more people to go vegan here in the US would be to radically reduce financial stress - I would think starting with immediately raising our minimum wage to something truly livable, not just something that barely keeps you from living on the streets.

It's interesting to know that the living system of French society is kinda similar to Scandinavian/Nordic countries. Unless we're paid less! Fortunately, the public authorities are very helpful in coping with the cost of living, which stems from very high taxation. Yes, France is well known for being one of the highest-tax countries in the world. The idea is to help low-income people achieve the same standard of living in modern society (education, healthcare, etc.) and to avoid the wide economic gap between classes in society.

I'm with you on most of the things mentioned. The only thing that doesn't work for me are the dinner parties at home. My home is my private space which I decorate according to my own (very weird and unusual) style. And most people would feel pretty uncomfortable there. When I moved to my current apartment I decided I'm gonna turn it to MY home, no compromise. I never wanted a big dinner table or a sofa and so I don't have any etc. etc. But I 100% agree with you regarding the ceiling lights. I turn them on only when I'm sweeping the floor :-) And I love to wear nice clothes at home. So I bought some nice lounge wear. I never understood how anyone can wear their PJs during the day. But that's just my personal POV. Oh and I can never relax in untidy surroundings 😁 Loving this kind of videos from you Jenny, very atmospheric and cozy. 👍

I would say in general that Germans don't care as much for aesthetics, but of course there are exceptions. I also need a 'quiet' environment to be calm. Not only visual but especially when it comes to any form of noise (I don't get the white noise thing at all 😂). I also really like the cosy dim light vibe, but I basically can't do anything when the room is not well lit. Working, cooking, eating, give me all the lights including the big one. I just can't see anything otherwise.

Oh and also, we have huge gaps, the middle class basically doesn't exist anymore and it only gets worse. You can have a very decent job but still don't know if you can afford to have kids. It's very bad for women, the spiral only goes downwards and you have to fear for being poor when you lose your partner or divorce when you don't come from a 'rich' family. The political development is only making it worse and changing laws taking away money from children, families and mothers.

even with the huge wealth gap in america, i was able to sustain myself comfortably in a small apartment off of minimum wage. for the last 3 years, i've been in a new position = middle class. i'm not monetarily rich by any means, but i feel very rich in life now. i've always been a conscious consumer; i never struggled when i was on minimum wage.
