/ 7-signs-youre-not-goin...
Even READING articles like this prove you aren’t going to be a rapper.
I’m here to tell you that’s absolutely NOT true.
7 Signs You’re Not Going To Make It As A Rapper (In 2023)
7. You Don’t Handle Fear Well
This usually shows itself it two ways.
A. Can’t Make It As A Rapper If You Don’t Leave Home
Going back to the “if you watch videos like this you won’t make it” mentality…
There’s nothing wrong with watching videos like this as long as you IMPLEMENT the advice and, frankly…
LEAVE YOUR HOUSE.
I’ve been coaching musicians online for almost a decade and it still AMAZES me how many rappers have no evidence that they actually leave their bedroom and try to get shows or attend music networking conferences…
B. Won’t Make It As A Rapper If You Are Scared To Look “Uncool”
The second way, more common to artists who already have “made it” or at least have some clout is…
They have a fear of looking “uncool”.
6. You Listen To Unqualified Advice ’Cause It Sounds Good
This is probably one of the most common reasons rappers can’t make a career outside of their bedroom or at best their city.
I started doing KZfaq music education videos back in 2014 when the advice scene was basically non-existent.
At that time I already 11 years of rap experience, U.S. tour experience, record label meetings and a bunch of other cool stuff before I made a video.
5. You Believe Everyone In The Music Industry Is Evil
If you look up most videos that start with the phrase, “music industry”, Google predictive text will predict you want to end with “sells their souls” or “illuminati” or things like that.
What that means is SO many people are just looking up videos to confirm their belief that everyone in music is evil.
This always makes me cringe because I notice the people who believe this stuff NEVER mention it about the so-called “lyrical rappers” they enjoy…
4. You’re Not A Team Player
This is a big one as well…
Look, everything good in life came from teamwork.
Even if it’s the most gangsta street rapper on lean 24/7…
Better believe the hustlers behind him are expert businessmen and would never let the golden goose drown in the pond of money they’re making.
3. You Don’t Know How To Control Your Emotions
I put it this way because I wanted to make a point about drug use in the industry.
Look, nobody knows you better than yourself.
If you have found that you can use drugs (however you define them) and are NOT prone to emotional outbursts, fights, embarrassing moments, and anything that can ruin career…
Then go ahead and have fun. Sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll.
2. You’re A Terrible Money Manager
This is kind of similar to the point about drugs.
There are TONS of examples of rappers with diamonds, cars, and a bunch of other material things that APPEAR to mean they’re good with handling money…
And then within two years they are selling jailbroken iPhone 7’s on your local King Boulevard.
1. You Are A “Stan”
I’m not talking about Eminem fans here specifically, there are people like this for EVERY rapper.
This is going to be a tough one to swallow…
But…
If you self-identify too much with a particular rapper to the point that…
They are your profile picture…
That you would probably faint with excitement if you met them…

I been guilty of stanning Nicki a little too hard in the past, but I did come to the realization that I want to have tea with her, not freak her out and so I try to take the mindset approach of being equals with my idols and not like, yakno being weird 😂 I also haven’t reeeally made it out of the bedroom. Although, I do have an album out, am planning livestream concerts, and am just learning how to get local gigs, the HARDEST part of coming out the bedroom was getting my friend to help me record music videos. Not because I was afraid she wouldn’t help me, but getting over the fear of recording somewhere out in the open! And ya know what? Those music videos are the best ones I did for this project HANDS DOWN. Thank you for all the lessons Drew 💕 I cannot repeat that enough.

The "unqualified advice" part hit me. My friend who makes music told me once, No one in the music business wants to see YOU make it, THEY want to be the one who does." So you can't always trust what they are telling will help you, they may be insecure and trying to keep you out of the way

#7 I have no problem going out and meeting people. My problem is that when I do go out to meet people, I’m finding a lot of people that are stuck up or so caught up in their own craft that they’re not willing to support each other. There’s a lot of artist/rappers who have HUGE egos/ are extremely competitive and don’t like working with people because of it. Some can’t admit that another is better than them, more consistent than them or further along their career than they are and will often showcase it by being standoffish. (To add context I live in the tristate area, NY) I had a HUGE problem with this. Especially considering the fact that I had a song of mine do numbers across music platforms (hit 1 million on SoundCloud alone). The fact that I was doing better than my peers made a lot of people not even wanna work with me. So I stopped trying to go out and meet people. Even A&Rs were a little cold towards me and often questioned the authenticity of my plays/streams.

What I’ve learned after 15 years doing music and now finally being able to do it full time The most important thing you can do for your music career is get a sales job and stick with it for a few years It’ll give you the network, money, and sales skills to monetize your craft. #5 is huge. I look like a huge dweeb making jingles etc being a full time LinkedIn creator but getting paid five figures per song ain’t no joke Everybody sells out. Learn how to sell. You’ll sell more. 😉

Great video drew. This definitely help underground rappers to gain attention and have a long lasting career. That 5th point is so true btw. Everyone looks like the mainstream rn as bad unless your Kendrick or J.Cole. Cuz they're the "good guys and different" so to speak. Hope up and coming rappers take this advise it will help them.

I just seen wutang live for the first time. I don't ever fan out, and it's got me in and around some pretty cool places and ppl. Song 3 to song 8 of the set list which was basically ghost and rae. I cried like a baby. Im 45 and not that guy at all. Like I was a kid again staring at my speakers in my room listeníng to enter the Wu studying and just trying to make sense of life. Glad I got that outta my system (just in case) I'm an extremely self aware and conscious of my surroundings and self, even poise and I had no warning or control. Just emotional vomit right there, on my shoes and the shoulders of my bros. Middle front. Row 3. Broad daylight 8n front of God, Wu Tang, and country. 45yr old white rapper, in my dopest matching track suit with crispy fresh timbos. Open mouth sobbing.Sheesh👐

From experience I'm gonna make it simple for all of the up and coming talent be original study the culture write and also learn how to freestyle off of the top that is what I learned in the golden era and nothing has been better than the 80s and 90s by design so even the mcs who do have talent don't get the push they dumbed everything down most of these rappers today don't even write they're own rhymes and they have catchy hooks with no real skill I can take any of you young guys and turn you into a beast yeah you can have a few radio friendly tracks but they shouldn't all be formatted the same you're beats should be different ect ect etc. That's my advice and I'm all for the culture real hiphop stand up!

I've been trying to become famous for years but realize it's not that simple. Submitted my music to radios and record labels is hard. I recently uploaded music to Spotify, KZfaq, etc. But I wasn't happy at all. Biggest goal is always making connections with people but due to my anxiety, it's depressing. We live in a world where ego, hate and jealousy exists. The music industry is just shady. But still trying everything to get my voice heard before I die. Point blank period.

Hey man, I’m from America.. a land where complete morons are finding success and foreigners who are insecure about their English actually speak better English than most people here. Girls are making 3 second tiktok videos of doing nothing and making money. People are actually getting paid for being terrible and hated, 2 words.. island boys. All you gotta do is create something and put it out there and the rest will fall into place if you persist.

Stay independent don’t sign with a label. If you have a steady fanbase don’t sellout. Don’t experiment until your fans tell you they want to you experiment. Consistently ask your audience what they want to hear. NEVER SIGN WITH A LABEL or to another artist. STAY INDEPENDENT. DON’T HIRE AN AGENT. Hire a trustworthy lawyer. HAVE A SECURITY TEAM OF REGISTERED gunmen. Don’t party with industry folks. Don’t buy jewelry until you have at least a 2 million unless you got a friend in the business that’ll discount you. Consistently drop music videos and invest in non music ventures. AND FINALLY I’LL SAY IT A THIRD TIME NEVER SIGN TO A LABEL

The phrase "make it" is alone hurtful. What qualifies as making it? Going on tour and doing music with your favorite artists? Making loads of money off it? Fine, have the goal of "making it" and always be disappointed. Because unlike what he wants to say you do have to sellout to be "successful" to that degree. Does that mean you can't make it into the industry without selling out? No, but I can promise you won't last long and most certainly won't be a household name. Btw yes Kendrick sold-out, J Cole I can't say with necessarily 100% conviction but yea, pretty sure. Eminem, Jay Z, it doesn't matter what style they do. It's not like they hide it, if you pay attention it's right in front of you. Stop trying to "make it" and just make geniune music.

can you explain how to make music without using beats leases cause its a little sketchy the beat maker makes 80% meanwhile the artist makes 20% this is why most artist fail because they fall for this kind of scam

I think you and the producer are supposed to come to a business decision of a 50/50 deal , if ya can’t do that then you’re working with the wrong one , it’s just not a fair deal but it all comes down to who did what to the song itself but a producer should never get more than 50%. There’s a ton of videos discussing royalties from professional business workers
