Former Netflix here. Good point about the degree vs bootcamp, however you left out open source. We favored OSS contributors, often more highly than degrees. I don't mean superficial contributions like adding comments, but real contributions. There are shiny new frameworks and projects all the time with room for impactful contributions. I'm not saying this is easy by any means, but you will definitely stand out from the crowd if you manage to pull it off.

Something that is rarely mentioned in videos and forums about the software engineering job market is that the information often times is very US specific. For example, where I live, getting a job as a software engineer is not difficult at all, and the open job opportunities are not severely down like it seems to be in the US currently.

I think its often refering to jobs at companies like google, apple, microsoft that pay 100k+ salaries.

The second issue, and sorry man for the insistence, is the argument that because tech is everywhere, it should not be that difficult to get a job: that is the fallacy of confusing absolute with relative magnitudes. You can have zillions of jobs in tech and a huge rejection of applicants because there are way too many for every position. Looking at LinkedIn these days, most decent positions have hundreds of applicants in just a few hours. Now compare this with a niche field like Assyrian archaeology and language; in Europe and the USA, only a handful of positions exist, but the applicants for them are fewer, so the guy with a Ph.D. in ancient history with ancient languages has better chances than an average software engineer to get a job faster

Can i get a job with an associate degree in computer science? Reason being I capped out of my student loans so I currently can’t afford to go to a 4 year school. Coding boorcamp is not appealing at all to me. I currently work in healthcare as a secretary & don’t see my salary increasing very much in my current role. I’ve always been interested in IT & stem.

If you have a bachelors of information Technology. Would you consider that a related degree that would make it easier to get into a software engineering role or would it be better to get a software engineering degree
@ConnerArdman
@ConnerArdman 7 ай бұрын
Information technology is pretty broad. Did that degree involve any programming or other aspects of software engineering? If so, then it is related imo. If not, it might help your resume a bit but I wouldn’t call it particularly related.

What advice do you have about a computer programming associates degree? Would I be able to get a job easier or would I have to go for the bachelors degree to be considered?

great question. ive been wondering this as well. im currently pursuing an advanced associates degree in computer programming & analysis. job listings scare me though, im not sure if i can put up a fight against a university student with their bachelors, so i’m thinking of taking the bridge to a university, doing an extra 2 years so 5yrs total schooling, to get my bachelors in computer science.

@@jyalexander9473 thats awesome! Im not sure how I wanna go about it after I finish my associates. I dont know if it would be smarter to pursue a job and get experience first before trying for a bachelors or see how much the job growth and oppurtunities will change within the coming years

It depends a bit on where you’re located, the jobs you apply to, what school it is, etc. That said, it’s generally a lot easier to get a software engineering job with a bachelor’s degree. That’s not to say it’s impossible with an associate’s, just much harder.

@@ConnerArdman Thank you for responding it is helpful. Do you think programming jobs as a whole would be harder to obtain with only a associates?
@ConnerArdman
@ConnerArdman 7 ай бұрын
Yes. Again, not impossible, but why would an employer choose someone with an associate’s over a bachelor’s if all else is equal? Just like a coding bootcamp though, it is absolutely still possible to find a job.

Of course it’s possible. It’s possible for nearly anyone. Will your prior experience be helpful? Maybe a tad, but honestly not much unless it involved coding in some way.

I really love math and computer science. I want to pursue a degree in Computer Science. Will becoming a software engineer means my math skills will be of no use? Will it help me become a better software engineer? Can i do both data science and software engineer ? Also, why are there a lot of math haters do software engineer ? For me, it makes the field less attractive as compared to other math heavy engineering.
@ConnerArdman
@ConnerArdman 7 ай бұрын
Having strong math skills can be useful if you pursue specific subfields of computer science that are math heavy (graphics, game development, machine learning, etc.), but if you just go for general software engineering jobs doing things like web or mobile development, most likely you won't see any significant amount of math on the job. It sounds like pursuing one of those fields (or data science) could be a good path for you, but of course only you know what's interesting to you. As for doing both data science and software engineering, not really. They are different jobs. As a data scientist, you might write some code, and as a software engineer in certain jobs you might do a bit of data science work, but ultimately they are different jobs. You certainly can learn both skills and even try your hand at both jobs (I know a lot of people who have transitioned from one to the other), but very few jobs would entail doing a significant amount of both at once. As for math "hating", I don't think that is the case at all. I don't hate math and I don't think most other software engineers do. I don't use it often because it isn't directly applicable to the goals I am trying to achieve, not because I dislike it.

@@ConnerArdman Thanks for the response. As a high schooler, this really help me decide my future. Currently, i view both of them as very adorable fields. So the best option for me is to have both skillset chose what i love more. I love data science because of the fact that it is a mixture of both CS and math. I love software engineering because of the problem solving nature of it. I know this is hard, but getting a job as a swe and freelance as a data scientist seems a reasonable option as well.

I think you are running into the same fallacy that exists in most jobs with a huge income variance. For example, is soccer or basketball oversaturated? It depends on whether you are skillful enough to play in the premier league or the NBA:yep, they are seeking new talent all the time and paying amazing salaries, equity, and bonuses. But if you are not within the top, yes, man, you are facing a wall of oversaturated applicants. The same is true in software development, even hardware development; you need to be in the top 1% to have any chance of landing a decent job.
