Reviews of high quality workwear, boots, and clothing for men to help you own better and own less. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well and allows you to own less and own better.

Yeah I'm with you on items that are just a little too fancy, too formal to fit practically into my life. I'm reminded of a random guy's funny tweet, "I have a 'Dry Clean Only' sweater that's about to learn some harsh realities about living with me."

Wash the sweater on gentle and hang to dry. Will probably be fine. What is usually meant by dry clean only is “don’t put in a dryer”.

Hey Carl, fellow high instep and John Lofgren Engineer owner here! My solution is to put plastic sandwich bags (those of the crinkly variety) over my socks when putting the boots on. This will significantly lower the friction between the foot and boot and act like some kind of lubricant. Over time, the boot will loosen up and the bags will no longer be needed. The plastic bag trick also works when breaking boots in and will prevent blisters!

For the watch, you're supposed to always turn it counterclockwise until you feel/hear the threads seat, and then you screw it down clockwise. Cross threading or stripping the screw down crown on nice watches is a very real thing everyone with a mechanical watch should know to be careful of going forwards!

Wear the SOS Harris Tweed Coat with the Gustin jeans. You are overthinking things, remember that Harris Tweed was originally and still is used for hunting. It is nice so you can dress it up but it is still hunting gear. The Gustin jeans will fit the jacket and will get better with wear (fading). If you are really feeling it throw in the JL boots with the outfit 😂, it would be nice though. What is the size of the JL boots?

Nice one! (RE the hat at the beginning) Taylor’s Stitch pants - they just don’t fit me well, ended up selling both pairs I got. Tried both democratic and their slim fit. LL Bean flannel - I might try them again but the one I got tore in less than a year with moderate wear. A leather Apple watch strap off Etsy - Failed in less than six months. I did wear it hard but replaced with an Ashland leather one and it has held up for a year. Dewalt jump battery pack - failed after one use and didn’t take a charge. I bought a gooloo to replace it at Project Farms recommendation and so far so good. I’m grateful there’s not too much on this list largely thanks to folks like you!

Your John Lofgren boots could be your most comfortable favorite boots if you do the produce bag trick and just wear them for hours a day. The thin slippery bags from grocery produce work wonders on these style boots. (Thank you Albert!). I know first hand how exhausting getting engineer boots on can be, but this is the saving grace. Also I allow my heal to stretch them out when I am just getting past that friction point. Also make sure to set them in front of the heater right before you put them on. This allows the leather to be soft and flexible.
@sweetpadre
@sweetpadre 5 ай бұрын
What exactly is this produce bag trick?
@heystarfish100
@heystarfish100 5 ай бұрын
@@sweetpadreWhen you are at the produce section of most stores they supply the customers with thin plastic bags to place your produce items into. The trick is to reuse those thin plastic bags by placing them over your foot before stepping into the boot. With this slippery bag on foot it will aid entry and help stretch the leather in the tight spots. Repeated use continues until you find the bag is no longer needed. Hope that helps.

I just did a podcast with Brian the bootmaker and he was explaining his reasoning for why the shaft of his engineer is a bit more voluptuous. Specifically the curve in the back stay and while I can’t say for sure, I think it’s the design that would solve for the issue you have. Moral of the story, stretch shaft!

Years ago I had a favorite ESQ dive watch that stripped the crown threads on :( It got retired to the desk draw but ultimately came back to life as a beginner restoration project. Got a replacement crown and threaded tube for it after careful measurement. KZfaq was helpful on how to get the old one out and install the new one. I was pleased with the result but spent way too many hours fiddling. I don't think I'll be doing anything like that again.

Oh no!! Purple pants!!! Those were a good idea! Overly formal clothes, shoes that hurt at the start (yes, you can break them in, but how much more do you want to spend for it?), cheap makeup (doesn't matter if your application technique is good. If it doesn't match and it's cheap, it shows) and cheap tools. I'm still annoyed about the circ saw I got off FB marketplace that seemed too good to be true when I was apprenticing and really wanted one. It was. Battery was shot. At least it came with a bag.

I had a London Fog coat with a leather collar that I loved. Wore it for 20 years until the material was paper thin. So I thought I found a replacement with an all bean 2 in one jacket. Turns out the inner jacket fit so close I wouldn’t wear more than a single layer underneath, so I had to wear the Jo at without the lining. Fine as a fall rain jacket but not warm enough fir winter.

When you where talking about sunglasses at first, I was thinking Randolph or American Optical. I am a private pilot and they are by far the best aviator sunglasses available. Then you mentioned your Randolph’s I smiled, definitely worth the spend if you don’t loose them, mine have stood up to 8 years in a cockpit, in a car and on my head. They have been dropped multiple times, knocked off my face by my toddler and dog, and somehow survived just fine. Glass lenses are not the demon that every optical store makes them out to be, mine have never shattered and they are way better optical clarity than plastic or polycarbonate. I collect watches and I fell victim to the same hype, I bought a Yema Superman when they first came out, it was a great watch until the crown stripped. Normally, I’d say the same as you did: it’s possible I did it, it was my fault. However, I have had 20 dive watches and that’s the only one I ever had an issue with. They repaired it once under warranty (I still had to pay shipping to France), but when I got it back it had the same issue within a few months, and I just threw it in its box and there it sits, regret in a box. Don’t beat yourself up on it, a lot of these micro-brands use cheap Chinese parts and assemble them in Switzerland so they can put it on the dial. It is my opinion that the screw threads on some cases are just too soft and strip out easy. Stick with your Oris, much better watch! Ok, last regret: White’s Mule Packer boots. I got a pair after buying a pair of Franks Patriots and loving the high arches. I wanted a more western style with a less aggressive lug. I did not really want to break the bank but wanted moderate quality from a known PNW company. The Mule Packers fit that criteria. Color me not impressed. My Franks’s are thicker leather, and have better quality than the Whites at about the same price point. Where I don’t think I sacrificed much on the Frank’s, you can tell the White’s are made for a “price point.” The laces are cheap, the leather is thinner, they seem to fit oddly, when laced up they pinch where the seams from the upper meet the lowers around the laces. This may go away as the my break-in, but man they are killing the tops of my feet. I believe they will hold up, they are good quality, but definitely not worth the price, your paying for the name on these in my opinion….

Hey Carl! I agree with you on the Randolph Engineering sunglasses. I had to laugh at your watch though. Most of the new watches I see here on YT sell for a lot of $$$$, have an over the top design, are actually cheap junk, and will re-sell for pennies on the dollar. I recently sold my 40y.o. Omega Speedmaster on ebay for nearly 10x what I paid for it. It ran perfectly, and it was still in style. One of my latest "biggest regrets" are the Pladra shirts I bought after watching your video. I spent nearly $500 on three shirts that look beautiful.....wait for it.....HANGING IN MY CLOSET! I have never worn them. The cotton fabric is quite rough and scratchy. The shirts are highly tapered, so I doubt they will fit a scrawny 18 year old, much less my late 60s body. What the hell was I thinking???? And why would I want pictures of wildlife on the underside of the collar? Or the NUMEROUS brand emboidery on each shirt (pocket, placket, sleve)? My other regret is that I'm too old to see the look of disappointment on the faces of the fools who have bought numerous "best in the world", "last forever", "hand them down to my son" expensive PNW boots. Your kids (if you are fortunate to have any) will not want, nor wear those hand me down boots! How many pairs of your dad's Florsheim shoes are you currently wearing? No matter how great they once were, THEY WILL NO LONGER BE IN STYLE BY THEN!! But hey...I'm just a boomer and don't have a clue what I'm talking about!😉🤣😂🤣

I've owned the cheapest as well as the most expensive gear, and I would recommend to anyone to buy the "middle of the road" items price wise. The cheapest has always been, well, the cheapest. The most expensive items almost always come with massive diminishing returns (regret), but the stuff priced in the middle has both price and quality going for it. Plus, when it eventually fails, just buy another. You're still likely under the cost of the most expensive item. There are a few things that I own that were quite expensive relative to the general price range of the item that I am glad that I bought. That's pretty rare though. Also, take care of your things properly, and they will last much longer. For example, I recently traded in a BMW 5 series after purchasing it new in 2022. It was the most expensive car that I had ever purchased. After 4 months I realized that I didn't like it anymore than my fully loaded 2020 Honda Accord. It was a nice car, no doubt, but the price difference for what you get is ludacris. It really is a status symbol thing. You're most likely buying it to show people you have money. I bought it because I always wanted a BMW and genuinely thought I would love it and feel that it was worth it. It was not for me. I'd rather save that money or use it for other things I'm interested in.

I bought a few Fresh Clean Tees. The first couple of wears are fine. The neck eventually deforms, won’t hold its shape. Late got some True Classics. They’re sort of better. Haven’t had them as long, tbd.

I regret buying my orient mako 2, because it started out a minute fast per week and after wearing it for three months it was five minutes fast per week I sent it back to them and then it began exponentially slowing. I sent it back again. It started picking up speed again. it never worked correctly which is really frustrating because I absolutely love the way it looks but I’m a chef, so having accurate time is incredibly important.

I regret nearly everything I’ve purchased except: 1. A cheap house on a 15yr mortgage back when interest rates were 3%. Smartest financial decision I ever made. 2. A pair of Odenwald boots from Allen Edmonds years ago. Look great, fit superbly, and have worn in a way that makes them look even better. 3. A Hamilton khaki field mechanical watch. Looks great with anything casual. 4. A pair of low-top converse Chuck Taylor 70s. Classic looks but built with way more cushioning than the standard Chucks. 5. A pair of selvedge jeans from Uniqlo. 6. A tobacco color corduroy trucker jacket from Banana Republic. Fits me perfectly. 7. A newer MacBook Pro - damn fine laptop, worth every penny. Yeah that’s about it. I have a ton of stuff, and don’t wear or use most of it. Omega watches? Eh, I end up wearing my Hamilton most of the time when I’m casually dressed. Suits and sports coats? Eh, I’ve worked mostly from home since 2018. Various flannels or work shirts from different brands? Eh, there’s like 2-3 I sort of like, rarely touch the rest. Various pairs of selvedge jeans from different brands? Eh, honestly, the cheapie Uniqlos have worn in the best. I could go on. I’m always like “ooh, squirrel!” and buy the thing that catches my eye, then I don’t really use it. Oh and bros, don’t ever buy a white leather chair if you even occasionally wear raw denim…

I regret buying my first pair of raw selvedge denim 14oz from Bravestar without realizing how tight they would be on my thighs as someone who lifts. I could barely walk in them and after wearing them my legs would hurt. Also they were much thicker than I expected . It's a no joke that when buying your first pair it's better to go as light as possible or at least find ones that are also with strech, 100% cotton was a pain. Unfortunately due to the bad experience I fret of buying a new pair from a different company without being able to return them and get refunded.

The first thing that comes to mind for me is the Patagonia P-6 Logo Responsibili-Tee, For me as a bigger guy there didn't fit me at all and was way to Tait and it was like human sausage casing on me and the only good thing was that I sold them to someone who could use them so they didn't go to waste. it also hurt men a bit because the old patagonia p-6 t-shirt form 7 years was my favorite t-shirt and had the perfect fit and wait for me but the new Patagonia t-shirt even the 100% cotton t-shirt nowadays just not are the and is thinner and build the sam😢

I love camping and golf so clothes tend to be duel function and Black Diamond use to be my go to brand, climbing pants fit me really comfortably. However in the last 4 years the quality of the brand, shirts, pants, shorts have all been falling apart far too quickly. Patagonia climbing pants have take all my money for pants lately. They are great quality and workwear is bombproof.

That Jacket is amazing. I’m a fellow tradesman. Hustling side work constantly. 12-13 hrs the norm. Except Sunday. If your a man of faith , I highly recommend the Traditional Latin Mass. You’d look good and proper with that Jacket in that setting. It’s nice to have a reason to get dressed up once a week. Honoring our a creator is the finest reason.

I regret so many things I bought out of FOMO essentially. I also get very enthusiastic about things/hobbies and get very into to them and then loose all interest in them. So I regret a lot of things. As far as footwear, Caterpillar boots, I like their simple style boots more than Timberland and Clark’s cost too much. However, they never fit right to my foot (Palladium has been the best but the glue always gives out). Luckily, I bought them on sale but still they were a lot of money.

I am a minimalist but by quality and wait before making a purchase. Levi’s, a Filson Jac shirt, a black tshirt and a pair of blundstone boots is the uniform of the day. If there was ever a reget it would be the omega moon watch. My Submariner is more than enough.

I regret buying Invecta watches. I do have one investa mechanical watch that I like but is to big to wear for work and has a metal bracelet. I now stay away from the metal bracelet and use leather or rubber type for I do electrical work and got my watch up against some terminals and welded the clasp shut. It got pretty hot & had to use pliers to get it off. Luckily enough it was low D/C Volts. I like your videos keep up the good work. I have bought Dluthe jeans in the past when they first started they lasted a long time but now they have cheep end them up. I have bought Herock jeans from Germany and they have lasted 5 years and I still can use them for they still look good

A black shirt, mock turtle neck, or black tee (depending on weather) would look good with those jeans, along with black leather shoes. Wear the shirt untucked. The black will lower the volume on the pants and look good, I think.

I’m in the same boat as you with the shirt that was to small, except with a jacket. I bought a Buzz Rickson Deck Jacket off eBay and it’s a really nice, warm jacket, but it’s a tad tight in the shoulders and the sleeve holes are way too high and they dig into my armpits. I tried to convince myself it fits fine and it’ll stretch out, but I’m lying to myself.
