Great video, Carl. Everybody on KZfaq likes to nerd out with “tacti-cool EDC” and show off their guns, belts and assisted-open unobtanium blade knives. Those things are cool and fun to play with but in reality my EDC is Red Wings, a Leatherman, Sharpie and a pair of Nemesis shaded safety glasses.

I love me my tiny RovyVon Aurora A5. I work in a theatre, so I'm in the dark at the job and when getting home and the practicality just can't be beat. When there's something that you really need a flashlight for, I've already got it illuminated while my coworkers are still fumbling with their phones. My flashlight's side light in combination with the clip allows me to clip it to the collar of my shirt for easy hands-free illumination. The ease of use and quick deployment also mean that I'm a lot faster and safer in situations where a light is just practical, but not necessary.

100% on the buff/gaiter. Best thing to come out of Covid for me. You can find them in merino wool and it’s surprisingly helpful in the cold. Breaks the draft. Use two wool ones, it’s as warm as a decent cap, and they’ll both take up way less space in the pocket than a hat. Makes a good windlass tourniquet, sun screen. I keep two over the stick shift in my truck. Never not going to have them any more. Thanks Covid!

I like a folding ruler. It's very common in Germany. It's like ten 20 cm wood rulers connected together with hinges, making one neat, 1.5 cm wide, 5 cm tall and 25 cm long stack when folded. The fact that it acts like a folding stick as well as come in handy so many times in my job as a theatre technician. When I need to get a cable to a place that I can't reach so someone can grab it there, I typically tie it to the end of my folding ruler and use it to "hand over" the cable. When a dropped screw decides to roll underneath something that's just off the ground, a quick sweep with my folding ruler is alI need to do to get it back. It also works for approximating a spacing that you can't even see in a pinch. Ofc, it's also useful for typical measuring and marking tasks. One example for such a task where it just can't be replaced is evenly spacing lighting fixtures I put on the floor. I'll calculate that I need a let's say 160cm spacing, I extend my folding ruler to that and I've got a spacing stick that I can slide around on the floor for quickly aligning things. Because everyone's posting their edc here, here's mine (as I often complete little tasks in "remote" places in the building (up on a lift, a work gallery or the grid) that might unexpectedly require tools, having a small, but useful toolkit in my pockets is invaluable, so it's quite a lot for an on-person edc): - keys (including bottle opener) - flashlight (RovyVon Aurora A5; it's side lightand clip allow for hands-free illumination as well) - phone - pens (favourite ballpoint, "rental" ballpoint (because I always get asked for a pen and people like to keep/break them), erasable pen, dual-tip sharpie and a water-soluble pen - a small pen-shaped 4 in 1 screwdriver with a magnet in the end - a folding utility knife (Gerber EAB Edge) - wallet - Leatherman Wave - plastic carabiner for rubber loops that are used for fixating cables - gloves - tissues - in-ear monitors (Shure SE215; useful for mixing when there are no headphones at the board and for connecting to the radio as headphones) - electrical tape - a key lanyard with a carabiner on it's end that I keep looped around my belt in order to hold a roll or two of tape if needed - some 4mm (?) cord - notebook - card holder - NCV tester (incredibly handy for troubleshooting, should not be used for testing if a circuit is dead prior to working on it) - adjustable wrench (I've been thinking about the Knipex plier wrench but I really love using my adjustable ones fpr measuring diameters) - watch (Cadio F-91W) - cabinet key - microfibre cloth (I despise fingerprints on screens) - USB drives - ear plugs - USB-C to USB-A adapter (to use said drives with my laptop that is type c only) - folding ruler - radio (if the work calls for it, which is every day we have an event going on, so most days during the main season) I'm planning to add a 10/13/17/19mm quad ratcheting spanner as well.

Cool stuff! I’m a mechanic, I keep it light since 90% of my small stuff stays on my box. But I always have a pocket flashlight on me, right now I have a Streamlight and a Coast which has rubber tips so you can hold it in your teeth. And a knife. I used to keep a multi tool but I don’t use them all the time now and I now use a simple Smith & Wesson black ops knife.
@jeffreydawson4520
@jeffreydawson4520 5 ай бұрын
A multi tool is a handy item to have, maybe not the best at all things but it’ll definitely work in a pinch (pun intended). A cheap lighter is also a good tool to carry, even if you don’t smoke. I used mine to burn strings off clothing, melt paracord ends to keep them from splaying and even to cauterize small cuts (it’ll really freak out your coworkers if you do it).

As a young welder and all around fan of EDC and its universe, Im very thankful that I get to grow up with all these amazing tools. Its crazy to think that people thought of this stuff. I too carry a PD25r, Fenix makes great lights that like you said "Just Work." I will say, a Victorinox could be a great addition for many people. I wouldnt want to go anywhere without a toothpick, tweezers, scissors, or phillips driver. A Milwaukee Fastback 6-in-1 and pliers/plier-based multitools are also big for me. I love my SOG Powerpint and Knipex 5in Cobras. Also got a Leatherman Arc on its way and Im hoping I love it too. Great video.

The Milwaukee Fastback has been the best utility knife for me. Unfolds fast, still uses replaceable blades, and has a bit driver that's been very convenient for me a few times at least. Went to check the Big Ideas utility knife, and the $175 price tag was a little bit of an ouch. I prefer a razor blade of some sort to open boxes instead of my knife. I settled on these little Olfa disposable “Touch Knifes” which are about the size of a half dollar. They work perfectly for boxes, though not so much for drywall. You buy them by the dozen.

Regarding flashlights, I have had all the overseas brands, as well as made in USA Streamlights. But there is a great brand called Malkoff. It is run by Gene Malkoff and his family, and IMO they make hands down the best flashlights and personal service to boot. Although they are not cheap, they are not ridiculous. Maybe consider doing a video about them one day.

Awesome video! I would add safety gloves if you work in like a farm or a place where you need to touch dangerous stuff, better be safe than sorry

I guess it doesn't really count as EDC but for me the number 1 must-have are good quality, comfortable work boots. This is not an area for economizing - buy good quality boots and not only will you be comfortable working but years down the line your feet, legs and back will thank you for it.

I worked at a golf course and it took them about 3 days before they offered eye protection and I was weekeating every single day. Not to mention they never offered anyone ear protection for all the heavy mowers or anything. Had to bring my own and then got ridiculed by the other workers because they didn’t understand why I’d want to wear ear protectors.

Carl I have a question and honestly I just picked your latest video to ask. I have been scrolling and scrolling through your feed, which video do you try on and showcase the collab you did with Heat Straps doing the waxed lumber jacket? The green and tan one.

I use the Bosch laser measure for estimating measurements during site visits. It says it can measure up to 165’. After about 110’ I can’t see the red laser dot. So, you could save a few bucks and get the 100’ one.

I wonder if its still accurate if you go with the 100' model. Bosch is typically very good with their measuring devices though.

I don't work in the trades, so this may be a silly question, but outside of polarized lenses why pick safety glasses over safety goggles?
@CarlMurawski
@CarlMurawski 5 ай бұрын
Mostly just comfort and convenience bro. Goggles may actually be a superior option since they’re kind of sealed all around. Plus my company only issues glasses.

I have the hardest time looking through polarized sunglasses when using my multimeter and other digital meters outdoors. Its that rainbow oil slick on the screen making hard to read the numbers. Anyone know a brand of polarized safety or sunglasses that can help? Thanks.
