7 Tips For Knitting With Cotton Yarn
In today's video I'm going to share all the trials and tribulations related to knitting with cotton yarn. (it's not that bad!) There are things I change about knitting when I'm picking up cotton yarn with my needles and starting a new project. From the needle sizes, the yarn weights for different projects, to how I hold the yarn and needles.

I actually love knittin 100% cotton from peaches and cream! I dont care what the project is... I definitely work it on my lap or table top to take most of the weight.i want to do a cotton bath towel in a very loose gauge. I'm not too worried about drying here in Arizona... :)

Awe excellent, thank you 🌞 I shall view later today when I can concentrate properly. btw the cotton yarn I'm unsure how to use has about 3 strands of separate cotton and I'm just wondering how to knit with such fine yarn that is made up of 3 strands. It's rainbow 🌈 coloured and I want to create a long scarf for a teen. Anyways, I look forward to watching when my day slows down 🙂

Since cotton is notorious for shrinking, I am looking for some kind of a guide or recommendations on how much looser to make the stitches than with regular wool or acrylic type yarns.
@KnitWithHannah
@KnitWithHannah 7 ай бұрын
I haven't seen a lot of shrinking with cotton, though it can depend on the specific yarn you're using. When I'm knitting blankets I do use size 5.5mm instead of 5mm or 4.5mm as might be suggested on a ball band, as I prefer a larger looser knit with cotton blankets.

Thank you for these tips. I am about to start on my first 100% cotton project. Would #4 Shiny Happy Cotton work with a 6.5" needle for a seed stitch cowl?
@KnitWithHannah
@KnitWithHannah 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer, I'd suggest a slightly smaller needle so the stitches aren't too loose, unless that's the look you're going for. Shiny Happy Cotton suggests 5mm, so I'd use 5.5mm at the largest. Happy knitting 🧶
@Jennifer-oz8ec
@Jennifer-oz8ec 2 жыл бұрын
@@KnitWithHannah Yes. I agree with you. I will use 5mm. I don't want to lose the essence of the density which seed stitch requires. I struggled with having to swatch again. Oh, well. I really enjoy watching your videos and like listening to your soft and gentle voice. Thank you for your quick response. So appreciated.

Hey Hannah! I live in the tropics so most of the time it quite hot here and wool isn't really the best option, I'm a little scared about knitting with cotton as i tend to knit a little tight and everyone says cotton is not elastic. Is there a way i could knit with it without building unwanted tension?
@KnitWithHannah
@KnitWithHannah 3 жыл бұрын
There's a cheat's way to do that -- use too large needles as you're knitting, the stitches will feel looser when you look back at the finished rows. Happy knitting. :D

My experience with purchased cotton knitted items is the stretch, especially ribbed bands. I am thinking of knitting a 12 month Baby cardigan in cotton, is there a way of avoiding this, eg adding elastic in cast on or does handknitted solve the problem anyway. Thanks.
@KnitWithHannah
@KnitWithHannah 3 жыл бұрын
With cotton try to reduce the number of stitches that make up the rib changes, so use k1, p1 instead of k3, p3 then the stretch will be more noticeable. Yes hand-knitted helps, certainly. Happy knitting 🧶

Hello, THANKS for tips. How do you connect cotton yarns in knitting? I work with a baby blanket and I would like the knot not to break out after washing and using fabric softener. In flat pattern, it’s also hard to work with cotton thread joints to hold and look beautiful in another projects 🥺
@KnitWithHannah
@KnitWithHannah 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dalia, I suggest watching this tutorial, Where I change yarn at about 15mins kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLeJeJyeuq7ekmg.html It’s a tough one, as it’s not as fibrous as other yarns, but leaving a long end will help secure it.

@@KnitWithHannah Thanks. My work is one color and I find video about magic knot. Try yarn with this knots wash and it not break out 😉 Thanks for the suggestion in work with different colors.

Hi, I have a question about a 70% cotton 30% bamboo yarn. How do I join it to stop it from coming apart as I am trying to get a blanket with it
@KnitWithHannah

This is when I start the new yarn a few stitches in from the end of the row, and then sew/weave in the ends once I’ve knitted a few rows or when I’ve finished.

Hi Hannah, I want to make a hat using Lion Brand's #2 fine organic cotton & #3 needles. The challenge is that I want to try to use stranded colorwork to create a logo design in 3 colors & I've never done this using cotton before. I also need info about charting the logo. Additionally, this is for an adult who has long dreadlocks, which need to be contained in the hat. He lives in the HOT desert (thus my choice of this lightweight cotton). Am hoping that you have some advice. Thanks so much in advance!
@KnitWithHannah
@KnitWithHannah 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, C.R. the biggest problem you might have is that cotton isn't great for stranded work as there's very little give in it. The lack of stretchiness doesn't allow for the stranding as it would do with wool or acrylic. Also with cotton there are so few fibres coming off of the yarn - in wool yarns that's a big part of what hold the fair isle colour-work stitches together. So, perhaps stripes, or moss stitch stripes might work instead. Another option is to embroider the logo on once you've knitted it, with what is called duplicate stitch.

@@KnitWithHannah Thanks so much for your input! Am now about 1/3 thru the project. The nightmare began when the rolled brim wouldn't exactly roll. I switched to wooden needles when the stainless steel ones proved way too slippery, even though metal was recommended. The yarn seems to be smooshing (flattening out) & what you mentioned about the fibers is spot on- no tooth to them for attaching. The hat definitely feels fragile & I'm concerned about the design staying put & not morphing/melting. The good news is that this gift only has to last through 2 football seasons & then the player will be in high school w/ a new team & different name/mascot. I still have one more of these hats to make (it is a Father/son gift). What natural fiber yarn (for wearing in the California HOT desert) in lightweight red, white, & blue can you recommend?
@KnitWithHannah
@KnitWithHannah 2 жыл бұрын
@@angelguidesindisquise especially as I’m in the UK suggesting specific yarns may not help as you’ll struggle to find them, so look for bamboo, hemp, cotton but also remember that wool is also breathable as it’s a natural fibre. If you can find a wool mixed with cotton it may work better. Merino/cottons are available for baby knits and may suit. Happy knitting 🧶

@@KnitWithHannah Thanks so much for all the input. I just tried to use an outline stitch on the word "BULLS" sans success. That has also been an epic fail. As I've been knitting for 63 years (since my mother taught me when I was 6 years old), This cotton hat is a horrible example of my true knitting skills

Hi Avril, that's not possible from my point of view. It's very much suggested for a big item like that you follow a pattern unless you have experience in knitting items like that before. There are so many variables to take into consideration which someone who has written a pattern will have taken into account for the yarn that you're using. The Ravelry website will be a good place to find the right item for the yarn you have to hand. Happy knitting! 🧶
