This was really useful! I should have watched this before starting painting with acrylics on fabric 😂 Could you please explain which type of fabric type of cloth is suitable for painting? I tried painting on one of my tops which is not cotton, I could see tiny fabric pieces coming off and the paint isn't sticking to the fabric.. Any suggestions?

Hi! Indeed sometimes I too find the useful stuff, only when I've already messed up 😜 sorry about your shirt, but that's exactly the mistake which will bring you to a better understanding of fabric painting process, so you're on the right track 👏 About your question, see, the variety of fabric paint brands which these days is available to us, allows to paint practically on any textile. The only trick is to know which brand is OKAY to use on mixed/synthetic fabrics and which are exclusively for cotton with max 20% of synthetic fibers. For example, Pebeo Setacolor, Decola stay put on even 100% synthetic fabrics, but Kreul Javana - will slide off after already first round of wash if you apply it on anything that's less than 80%cotton. Fabric type and weave also matters. For you to get the most on this topic, I'd recommend you join the Open course Fabric Painting Foundations. Can i used a base white ? Ill paint all with white before I use the colored ones to make it vivid?

Hi! Yes you sure can. Just make sure that: •the base coat will be made with FABRIC paint,not gesso, not regular acrylics •let the base coat dry before applying the color •use the color paint of the same brand as your white fabric paint for base. Good luck in your creativity 👏🌟

Hi Fatima, which fabric paints are available to you? See if Fabrica brand is there. It's not bad at all, I tested it, it's of decent quality. Online should be present. Also, just from the top search in Pakistan I've instantly found Mont Marte fabric paints in a set Rs 2,645 for 20jars (it's a good paint👍), and Marabu Textile Outliners are also therewww.thestationerycompany.pk/collections/fabric-paints. Just type in Google: buy fabric paint in Pakistan I hope you'll find something good for yourself, let me know

Hello, I've been using Pebeo Setacolor Opaque paint to create a design on the back of a jacket. I first applied a layer of white paint and then painted the rest on top. I let it dry to the touch and then ironed it for five minutes as per the instructions. However, I ended up with a slightly sticky finish. When I sit and lean my back against a chair, I notice that the design sticks to it and peels off, damaging the artwork. What could I have done wrong? Do I need to let it dry for a longer time, or can I apply some kind of varnish to prevent the sticky finish? Thank you very much.

Hello! I apologize for later response. So sorry your artwork is undergoing this experience... Paintings on the back are a sensitive topic. It seems that you've done a good job following the process. I can think of a few points which still could cause this " sticky" issue: 🔸Were you letting each paint layer become touch dry (base coat, other color layers)? 🔸Is it possible that paint layers were too generous? 🔸We should let the painting dry and rest before ironing for at least 24 hours. 🔸First laundry round sometimes helps remove slight stickiness of painting (if all other steps were done correctly), have you tried this? Remember please, not to use softener though, and preferably air dry the jacket Please let me know how is it now and if any of these advice worked Good luck!🍀

I'm painting on a green cotton with Tulip Brush-On fabric paint in purple. I've applied two coats and its only slightly purple and very dark. Thoughts on how to get it more vivid and purple?

This is a common issue for many darker color tones. Red, medium green, Orange and Purple - are the colors which, if needed to show up bright, are best be applied on top of white base coat. Try it: first apply a thin but proper layer of white fabric paint, let it completely dry, and then apply (most likely two) layers of Purple in the same manner by letting each of them dry before another. White underlayer allows darker shades to pop on colorful and dark fabrics way better.

Hello! My fabric paint from setacolor was bleeding because I was diluting it with water as I couldn’t get it to go smoothly/properly and be opaque onto the rough canvas bag I was painting. Do you think I should still not dilute it and just wait for it to dry abit before doing a second coat? Thank you for your help

Hi Michelle, usually Setacolor paints (when fresh) have quite a loose/smooth texture, even the opaque ones, so they really do not need diluting. In case paint in your jars is quite thick (which I also encountered not once from store shelves), moderate dilution should help . Do not poor water into paint though... Take out some amount from the jar and start bringing in water into it on the bristles of you brush, mix each time to reach a creamy texture. Good luck!

Hi! Most brands which produce fabric paints have a variety that includes glitter. Among those that I've tried, I could recommend Setacolor Glitter, Javanna Glitter fabric paint, Tulip Glitter and Crystals, etc... You could also make your own glitter fabric paint, by simply adding a moderate amount of fine glitter powder of desired shade into your fabric colors prior to paint application. I'll have a video- demo on this channel soon on the topic of glitter and shimmering fabric paints, which, hopefully, will be helpful for you👏🏼

Hello Anna, I'm glad you found it helpful. There are quite a few manufacturers that produce good quality of fabric paints. When making a choice, I usually look at the project requirements. At the same time, I could, for example, prefer an opaque fabric paint from one brand and colors for light fabrics from another one. To name a few, I enjoy working with Pebeo Setacolor paints, Kreul Javana, Decola Textile, Jacquard Textile Colors, Marabu Textil and others. There are still a few brands that I'm looking forward to get my hands on like Pentart and Acrilex, I heard interesting things about those paints too, so one day, hopefully, will share my experience about it as well.

Hi! It's a tailor's chalk pencil, at any sewing/craft store should be available and quite affordable. Btw, this one I bought from one of those Japanese dollar stores like Daiso.

Hello 👋 sorry for delayed response There certainly is no need of any protective coat on painting, in case you used fabric paints This type of paint is made with different components,than regular acrylic paint, to be able to withstand wash and wear. There are also specific instructions about heat fixing of painting, to ensure its durability and permanence on clothes. Hi! It can. You will need to stretch the sock on the board, though. And depending on the fabric of socks, you'll have to be careful when heat setting it. This type of paint requires a bit of a knack to work with, just keep this in mind in case your project won't completely meet your expectations from the first try👏

I use quite a few, for which purpose do you mean? To sketch the picture in this video I used a disappearing textile marker (purple) Javana, because I wanted just to outline my illustration and have it gone after the painting was done.

Hi, you can always trace the image you want on to fabric and then simply color it! It's really not a big deal, just need to try. I use acrylic paints on fabric. Have for years. So, I disagree with you. Fabric paints are just acrylic paints. Still have clothes painted twenty or more years ago using acrylic paints.

Dear Marie, sorry for a late response Thanks for your opinion and it's nice that your creations made with regular acrylics stayed on for this long👏 Of course there's no doubt that it's possible to paint textile with acrylic paint, the only question is how comfortable the painted design is to skin, since this type of paint is really stiff on fabric. Perhaps you've painted in a watercolor technique by diluting your colors? It's an opinion, however I believe that not everyone Has to become an professional painter, and that there's a creative edge to each average person, who only needs to find a "key" to their inner artist.
