FF12, while being one of my fave FF games, had me scared of opening nearly every chest I came across. “Does this one have Demonsbane? Or does this one give me 1 Gil, lock me out of 20% of the game’s content and deletes Basch from the cast?”

FFXII is fantastic, but no game should have so many RNG based mechanics specifically designed to mess you up

I remember having the strategy guide for FF12 and it actually had footnotes for each of the chests that would prevent you from getting the Zodiac Spear.

Regarding Missing Score: The narrative reason why you'd want Barrett in your party for that sequence; This is the party finally sticking it to Shinra, so it'd make sense that Barrett, the guy who hired Cloud for the first mission, is there to see his mission through. But that's all subtext and whatnot. There is no outright hint for it. First time I missed it I reloaded my save and replayed the entire Return to Midgar sequence. 😅

Lionheart has always been my favorite ultimate weapon. The gunblades are awesome.

To hell with the Zodiac Spear. That one item made me paranoid to pick up anything in the entire game without looking up the book.

For the Zodiac age, the “permanent lock” of the license board has been “removed” in the latest updated version. Players can now reset license boards anytime they want when they talk to the Huntclub’s Montblanc. He has the option to reset the board, your license points are refunded and you can respec your board and jobs. The genji gear stolen from Gilgamesh are more missable gear. If you didn’t know that you have to steal repeatedly after every sword change you’d think the only items you can get are (if you steal early) a potion or (if you steal late) just one genji gear piece.

I am glad you mentioned how brutal us PAL region players got it with FF9, i tried so many times as a teen and just wondered if it was a cruel, mean trick and not actually possible to get Excalibur II

Had no idea Missing Score was missable. That was literally how I beat Ruby Weapon so I’m glad I picked it up. I just played through FF12 TZA recently and the chest RNG is absolutely insane. I manipulated tf out of that RNG but even THAT is pretty complicated and takes a bunch of time and effort.

You could make a missable video for every final fantasy, I like blind playthroughs but I always ended missing something very important, materias in FF7, magicites in FF6 (and even a certain character in WoR), Guardian forces and cards in FF8, etc

Playing through FFV again has me dreading getting certain pieces of gear especially if i'm going to be getting more than one of them. Some of the drop rates and the enemies who will give you trouble just to get them is pretty brutal. Not sure if i'll actually go for the bell or not, but i'll be giving it a shot once i get to Twintania.

Might as well put the Caladbolg in FFX international! Because if you miss the Sun crest the first time around, you have to beat Dark Bahamut to get it after! Good luck with that 😂

Every once in a while I think about trying for Excalibur II, but it's always been a few years since I"ve played FFIX, and I come back to wanting to actually experience the whole game again rather than speedrun through it. So yeah, I'll probably never get that one.

I missed Barret's "Missing Score." I rarely use him when I played FF7, and I was so pissed knowing that it was 100% missable if he's not in the party. No clue, no story about it, no dialogue, etc. Just some ramdon ass-made rule by someone in the dev team to make that distinction. I'm still pissed until today.

Yeah, I'm glad VII was mentioned for the ridiculous amount of missables the game has. It's really easy to lose the opportunity to get a rare weapon, scene, etc... I remember being surprised and confused when people were talking about a Rising Sun and Yuffie. Then I found out it's unique steal from item from Diamond Weapon, in the sole battle you have with it. Wild.

The only weapon I did get on this list first time was Missing Score. In fact I even remember specifically using Cloud, Tifa, and Barret on this section of the game as it just made sense.

Cadolbolg FFX. If you neglect to get the sun crest immediately after beating Yunalesca, then the earliest you can get it is after beating dark Bahamut (the second hardest super boss). It's enough to push Tidus out of your final party.

Personally I prefer doing my 1st playthrough completely blind (except when looking up bosses that give me trouble) where I only use characters I like & don't bother with mechanics/minigames that I'm not interested in. If you don't know about fancy weapons, you don't stress over fancy weapons - that's what the 2nd playthrough is for xD

We used to sit down and experience games as a family (my mom and two older siblings and I), and FFXII was no exception to this. I remember my brother telling me about the Zodiac Spear and its insane method of obtaining it and how at the time he'd found out about it he had already opened one of the chests, but that there was still supposed to be a slim chance to obtain it through a one-time-only chest in the Lhusu Mines. I got so scared about opening chests and causing the RNG to delete it from the line-up in Nabudis that unless it was an OTO area like Nalbina Dungeons I literally would not open any chests for fear I'd mess up being able to get it. I even rushed Nabudis as soon as I was able to from the closest route possible in order to obtain it, and I was so excited!! I then proceeded to return to every available area with a chest connected to the ZS's RNG and opened all the other ones I had to ignore XD

In the GBA version of FFVI you can steal the Ragnarok sword from the 3 phase of the final boss and keep it for post game. So technically the GBA version of Lightbringer is not missable.

I typically had missables, as most require you to be borderline if not absolutely psychic. My favorite RPG in regards to this was Wild ARMs 1. The game told you in game, even if only a vague hint, how to find everything major. The only things missable was a summon rune, that you at least vaguely knew you could miss something in the dungeon its in. Cecilia's weapons could be missable, or rather lost, if you sold them, and for the longest time, I never realized they can be used with her force ability. I feel in FF 6, there's also at least an honorable mention for the Ultima weapon I believe in the proper translation, definitely Atma in FF 3 US, as it's in some mid game dungeon, and you can never return later. That thing is fiddly, but it can do as much devastation as Lightbringer so long as you keep your HP up, and without the GBA extra content, is very helpful for doing 8x9999 hits.

4:42 The Tinker Bell is not a bard weapon. Bells are typically Geomancer weapons and in Five can ONLY be equipped by Geomancers and Freelancers.

I didn't even know the lightbringer existed before now. Can't tell you how many times I played through different systems. I always ended up taking the magicite shard because I'd rather have a full collection of magicite than full collection of weapons

And then there is FFX, where none of the ultimate weapons are really missable and yet, I chose everytime to just complete the game without it. Even in the pandemic where I had all the time to master blitzball, dodging lightning and doing chocobo races I still said "f it!"

I really like when a game (even a long RPG like a Final Fantasy) gives you mutually exclusive options on a playthrough: like the Mi'ihen Highroad Mystery in Final Fantasy X-2, or the sword/stone Ragnarok in FFVI. I don't mind when there's no such thing as a "perfect" game; in fact, I find it rather freeing. I know that these things really annoy completists, but there's often a middle ground. For example, in FF6, your enthusiasm for joining Banon will determine whether you get a Genji Glove or a Gauntlet. You will eventually be able to get the relic you passed up, but not until later in the game. So while it certainly makes a difference in the short term, it doesn't matter in the long term.

I can say that I got the Excalibur II. What a rush of a playthrough to make it in time. I had like an hour and a half to spare, but still felt tight haha.

Yeah, I missed the "missing score" first time round, because I didn't have Barret in my crew. The game doesn't tell anyone they are meant to have Barret in their crew when returning to midgar.

It's not really an Ultimate Weapon, but one that haunts me is the Octagon Rod from 9, which is the only way for Vivi to learn the -ga spells. It's actually pretty straightforward to obtain: it can be bought for 4500 gil at Esto Gaza after the Desert Palace or from Daguerreo during Disc 3.

I actually didn't know about Lightbringer in FFVI, but I did so happen to have the Ragnarok sword on the file from my first playthrough. So today I was able to get my hands on my first Ultimate Weapon! Thanks FF Union!

Small issue: the Tinker Bell is not a Bard weapon; Bards use harps and instruments. The Tinker Bell is a Geomancer weapon.

Getting Excalibur II is so ridiculously hard. For instance, every guide on acquiring the Excalibur II requires you to impress all 100 nobles during the play so that you can get 10,000 Gil and the Moonstone, which are both incredibly useful and vital for the run. I’m attempting the run on my PS1 and it’s incredibly difficult for me; the closest I’ve ever got was 99 nobles.

I hate missable items in long games. It makes me feel I need to google a guide before even starting. If its a short game sure I can replay it but none of the final fantasy were short.

Final Fantasy 12 is my favorite game in the franchise, but the way it handled some of the drops was insulting.

FFII Arcane Labyrinth weapons are not (really) missable. If you mess up with the key terms in the dungeon (which btw is nowhere near as complicated as it's presented in the video), you can try again to obtain the weapons. Sure it's a waste of time, but better than Excalibur II or Zodiac Spear/Escutcheon and the like. The only way you can miss the weapons is by missing the one key term you can miss, but the window to get it is pretty generous.

10:53 - Except in the Game Boy Advance version, in which the Ragnarok and the Ultima Weapon can both be repeatedly stolen from enemies in the final battle just before Kefka.

For me it’s the Seitengrat Bow from FF12 Zodiac Age (not sure if it’s present in the original). It’s an invisible chest. Plus the RNG element. Oooo

A little disappointed that the FFT Javelin and Escutcheon (sometimes referred to with a 2) didn't make the list. Not only were these only on a single map, that map is part of the continuous optional side story that included Reis, Beowulf, and more. ON TOP OF THAT, you needed someone with Move-Find Item to get onto each of the Height 7 tiles initially occupied by Hydras. Once the Hydras were removed from the pillars, I'm pretty sure you needed a large animal friend (such as Dragon form Reis, or Construct 8) to stand next to the pillar, as well as 4 or 5 jump (likely requiring jump enhancing boots) just to get to the top of this pillar. THEN you had two options for what your Move-Find Item person actually found: Javelin 1 or 2/Escutcheon 1 or 2, however there is no number on these weapons in game, though they look slightly different. Meanwhile, you can't hurt the boss too much or the fight will end, and the boss generally hurts a lot. In the end, even with all odds in your favor, if I'm remembering my mechanics correctly, you had a 90% chance to get the desired item, but it's a LOT of effort.

Think of all the weapons and the different version I am surprised we have not seen a Gilgamesh mobile game where you are just collecting weapons.

Cait Sith's megaphones Starlight Phone and HP Shout are equally missable both being found in Midgar. Another Ragnarok can be stolen in the final battle in the GBA and mobile version based off of it which can be farmed.

im currently playing the original ff7 so ill be going after missing score but you didn't mention any from final fantasy 3,4,8,10 or 13 that being said if you have or happen to do a list of the hardest items to get in final fantasy the venus sigil for lulu's onion knight celestial weapon in ff10

In FF12 Zodiac Age you can always reset your board at any time, so Ninja blades are not really missable.

As much as i may love FF12 TZA, those 0.1% Diamond Bracelet chests from the Cerobbi Steppe make me wonder how the heck i fitted out my whole party by going there early, maybe those aren't permanently missable, but the odds of getting anything are so low

FFv's Tinker Bell is used by geomancers, not bards. Even though it's the strongest in power, the Rune Chime is better because it can boost all elements, except water.

Classic JRPG design right there. Make unlocking cool stuff extremely obscure and convoluted so that the only way to obtain them was either the stars aligning and you get it by pure luck, or you buy the strategy guide. Alot of them were designed this way to make you buy the strategy guide for another 30 bucks 😅

One of my favorite hobbies as a child was grind the final area of Final Fantasy Legend II for monster meat to evolve my monster party member... until a Haniwa dropped a Seven sword. Probably the craziest single weapon in any of the games, crazier than the Seitengrat... slap it on a robot and get unlimited uses.

I find Genji set (helm,armor,shield and gloves) a more missable in FF12 original ver. since this is the trickiest method to acquire in the game if you're not aware on the mechanics but the title was meant for missable ultimate weapons Tbh most FF12 original ver. in-game late items was so tedious to find , very missable and require some tips and tricks to acquire ( whale whisker, zodiac spear, zodiac escutcheon, ribbon ) And many new to the game doesn't even know that starting weapons small swords ( mythril sword and mythril blade ) was rare and no other means to acquire ( except mythril sword drop from Omega mk. XII )

Not having the Blood Sword in II makes the last boss a bitch to beat. Especially bc it's so easy to miss, just bc you didn't talk to a Paul at a very specific time. Needless to say, I've never forgotten it again

I remember as a teen, back when the internet was still scarce as a desert, I gathered whatever guides and sources I could find for FF9 for the PS1. I loved the game so much that I worked so hard grinding and getting a 100% completion. As I reached above the 99:99:99 mark of the gametime, I managed to level up all my characters to 99 and I got all the items. Until I found a single guide and rumor about Excalibur 2. I was like, "wth". I recelled finding a guide where if you meet gilgamesh you'll be able to aquire the best weapon in the game. I tried and tried, but I could never find it. Years later when the internet became a good source, I saw the important note that you need to beat the game under 12 hours. Yeah... I still have my save file, but no chance I'll ahve that time and enthusiasm to work my way to a 100% :))

FF6 lightbringer (illumina) also teaches ultima. Combined with a Paladin shield. It’s a no brainer to get the sword and beg it.

Thank God the FF12 PS2 save could be edited to give you the Zodiac Spear. (first/last 8 bytes is a CRC32 of the data in between). I was so mad at how missable the first Zodiac Spear is....the 2nd chance is a 1:1000 chance of getting from a chest, upon zoning into a dungeon.

Excalibur 2 is easy to get, an unmissable item. Just max out the timer until it reverts to 00:00:00 xD

I love FFXII as a game, but one thing i still don't get to this day is why they did so many rare items hidden in obscure places or behind unreasonable low percentage chances, it feels like a mmo system more than anything, i get the idea of hide stuffs to make people buy guide books at the time, but idk, whenever i come back to play it again that issue always gets me when i want to finish a build or just collect for the sake of collecting.

Honestly, the lightbringer/lumina sword for FFVI was never worth it. Magic is utterly broken in VI (for good reason, lorewise) and ultimate just wiped the floor of almost any battle you used it in (the final battle could be won in seconds if each character used ultima nonstop). The sword is nice and has excellent power, but it's really nothing compared to an aoe nonelemental magic that ignores magic defense. Unless, of course, you wanted to stray away from easy mode and not get ultima.

There's also Yuna's Nirvana in FFX: if you don't get the secret in Bevelle's temple you can't achieve Moon Sigil and unlock the weapon at full power. Also Tidus' ultimate weapon is kinda hard, but not missed for ever, if you don't take the Sun Crest the first time after beating Yunalseca since you'll have to beat Dark Bahamut. Nice video btw ❤️

this isn''t permanently missable, but I do like how if you don't immediately go back into yunalesca's boss room you have to get through a dark aeon fight in order to get tidus's ultimate weapon.

In the zodiac version of ff12 you can reset your boards whenever you want so you cant really miss the ninja blades

The Excalibur II was never permanently missable... but if you didn't get it in the 12 hour requirement, have fun leaving your game on until the timer overflows.... which takes around 20,000 to 24,000 hours of gameplay depending on the version. That's 2-3 years roughly of leaving your game on....

You can miss ultima weapon I'm both 13 and 16 if you accidently sell an old weapon needed to craft

The items in FF Tactics Deep Dungeon are very missable! They're a pain to get even if you know what you're doing!

I love this attention to detail and the option to be able to collect ultra rare items. I was so disappointed with FFXVI where it felt just any other generic super linear action game.

Ragnarok and Lightbringer don't count in versions past the SNES And Playstation 1 version, Just steal them and the Ultima Weapon from Girl and Sleep in Kefka's Tower FB gauntlet and defeat Kefka then load your complete save.

Not quite an ultimate weapon, but the items for breaking the HP and Damage limits on Rikku and Paine's Special Dresspheres would definitely qualify. At least X-2 has New Game+, so it's not a total loss.

The Zodiac Spear from FF12 was never a weapon that I worried about collecting. You couldn't break the damage limit with weapon attacks and most of the strongest weapons with Bravery did 9999 or 6999 if the boss was being cheap

You also missed the HP Shout from FFVII... It's Cait Sith's ultimate weapon... Much like Barret's, it can only be obtained once you revisit Midgar sector seven later in the game, inside Shinra bldg's locker room on the 64th floor..

Back on the PS2, I got both the Ensanguined Shield and the Zodiac Escutcheon with pure blind luck. Had no idea they were ultimate shields, no idea they were missable, and no idea what I did to get them. In fact, for the Ensanguined Shield, I remember thinking I got it through a glitch, because of the whole, “opening a chest and it not going away” thing. Really thought I just got lucky.

No idea how any of XII items made this list tbh. You could still get the gear, just at a greater reduced drop chance. Zodiak spear had like a 2 or .5% chance to appear in the mines where you fight Zodiark (even if you opened the chest) Ninja swords in The Zoditrash Age wouldnt be missable, just not usable (which was a crap move, just tell people you don't want people using good weapons lmao) Shield could still drop even if you opened the chest they were in with armlet, but trust me when I say the rate was worse than Zodiarc Spear. I think I had roughly 550 resets before it popped back up. And why claim this? Because I literally wrote an entire guide back when I was in highschool when the original dropped, that included statistics.
