as an american who's bartended in both the US & UK, the difference in service culture took me aback when i worked in london. my manager would get mad if, as i bussed empty glasses off tables, ask if guests would like another drink. 4 out of 5 times they'd say yes, the bar would sell more product and i'd get tipped - win win win, right? response: "brits will expect table service if you do and WE CAN'T HAVE THAT". lol welcome to the UK, the differences stories i could tell.

I started driving (legally) at 15, and my dad started driving (legally) at 12. In most states, everyone gets their license at 16 years old, because most places have no public transportation, it's usually at least an hour's walk to the nearest store, and parents don't wanna tote their kids all over town.

Even Lawrence always points out when he is generalizing. The US is huge with both regional cultural differences as well as some laws varying from state to state. The age for driving is one example. He’s been in the US for about 13 years and has mostly lived in the Midwest, so that’s mostly where his personal experience with the US comes from. Also, you brought up two examples of American pubs which are attempting to model themselves after an English and Irish pub. Lawrence points out these are not necessarily representative of American bars. His other videos are worth the watch. He compares all kinds of things.

The drinking culture in Britain is next level. I've heard Dave say on more than one occasion that he agrees with the drinking age being 16 because you've got to learn how to drink. Well, no you don't Dave. There are a few adult activities that it is best to put off until young, immature and emotionally fragile 16 year old's grow up a bit more. Also, it seems in Britain the pub culture sprang up around small local pubs that were close to where you live, so that even if you drink too much you could still walk home. Here in the US it is more likely that you would be driving home from the bar, tavern, pub etc and therefore be a greater hazard to the public than if you were just taking a piss or throwing up on the street as you staggered home. Once again, your way works for you and ours works for us. 👍

you can get your driving permit at 15 and as long as your parent or legal guardian is in the car with you, you can drive, getting a driver's license at 16 is VERY common in the United States. One of the reasons the drinking age is 21 is 1. Drunk Driving, Teenagers already have "questionable" judgment when it comes to many things, so mixing alcohol into the equation makes many of their decisions even worse. 2. Studies have shown that people's brains are still developing into their early 20's and so giving a person the ability to drink alcohol at the age of 18 can stunt their ability to become fully functional adults. 3. Most 18-year-olds are still in High School and so they did not want High Schoolers showing up to school drunk/hungover.

Its amazing how many people including Americans do not understand drinking age laws. 21 is the national age to which someone can buy alcohol and someone can drink in public. Many states allow for drinking under the age of 21 when in private, you can even throw parties with alcohol as long as based on the state the parents are there or the parents have given consent. The same misunderstanding happen with tobacco, before the laws where changed a few years ago. 18 or 21 was not to smoke, it was to buy tobacco, only like 3 states had age laws to smoke, some cities might have had ordinance on smoking age but for the most part all an officer could do is take the tobacco from someone under 18 and if they wanted it back their parents would have to come get it. On private property (including homes and offices) with parental presence and consent: 29 states On private property (including homes and offices) without parental presence and consent: 6 states For religious purposes: 25 states For medical purposes: 16 states Only 5 states have no exception to the national 21 law. (not 100% true) What is not mention is consent of spouse, if you are under 21 and marry someone who is 21 or older you can legally drink with them in most of these same states.

1) You're absolutely right about the importance of learning to drink responsibly and the absurdity of our drinking age of 21. Everyone I know well began drinking as a teenager, and, except for one alcoholic, did their heaviest drinking before age 21. Adulthood is legally defined at age 18, except for drinking. A persuasive argument can be made that our drinking age laws violate the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees equal protection for all. (BTW, this should have prevented all of the "Jim Crow" racial discrimination laws from the 1870s-1960s, but we just ignored that part of the Constitution.) 2) One of my favorite beers is Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout. It's a rare treat because it's so expensive.

I lived in Vegas for a few years right after I graduated and most drinking and the "loads of life" are in the massive hotels. When I was young and had the damn energy we'd "hit the strip" every single night. Underage drinking and gambling. A few very beautiful ladies of the night. The hotels are so massive the only people you really see on the street are just moving from hotel to hotel. The masses on the streets usually happen during the day when tourists are awake trying to see everything and if you're on vacation, you can't unless you have a few months and even then good luck unless you just walk passed everything and never stop anywhere. Our favorite spots circa 2005 were Cesar's and The Stratosphere. Usually valet at Cesar's, get drinks, hit a club, and walk to The Stratosphere for hookah, more drinks, the slingshot for an adrenaline rush and head back to Cesar's. Lots of celebrities hangout in the clubs there and unless you are local it's difficult to get in a lot of places. You learn after a few to just not give a shit. My buddy made Paris Hilton cry because he wouldn't dance. That kind of thing happens quite a bit because those party going celeb types will hit clubs and think "I'm gonna get so much attention". No, sorry. We've had enough of you, no one cares.

The drinking age thing is a simplification: for example Idaho's drinking age was 19 until the national drinking age was introduced. Since I was going to USU at the time, and it is only about 20 miles to the Idaho State Line, I got a job as a bartender-well until the fun police raised the age...

While the drinking age is ridiculous in America, I’ve never met anyone who hadn’t began drinking before turning 21. In English and German descent families it’s common for children to have a tiny cup of wine at dinner. We really don’t pay much mind to the legal age.

Many states allow you to get your permit prior to your 16th birthday and then you can take your driving test on your 16th. Other states require the new driver to take driver's ed before they can get their license. I had my permit before I turned 16, but my son was required to complete a driver's ed course and didn't get his license until much later. As for the age of 21, there was a spike in deaths after the drinking ages went down to 18. Also, think about the ages of our high school students. I turned 18 at the beginning of my senior year. The 18-year-olds were who the others went to for cigarettes. Do teens still have 21-year-olds and other adults who buy them alcohol? Yes, of course. But, they have fewer people they can turn to. In my home state, they went so far as revoking your license until 21 if you got caught drinking underage and increased the fines massively. But, if you want to see effed-up liquor laws, research Utah. Ohhhhh boy. They are seriously messed up.

You can get your permit at 15 years 6 months and then need to drive for 6 months with a licensed adult before being able to apply for your driving license. Some states may vary from this, but it the case in most. Many teenagers get their license at 16 but there are many who wait. Kids on farms can usually drive farm equipment by 12 as long as they stay on the property,

Most states in the middle you can get a provisional license at 14. It's necessary for farm kids to be able to drive to school. Most farmer's kids start driving very young. I was driving a standard transmission grain truck at the age of 12. You can drive without another licensed driver in the car from sunrise to sunset.

Closing times here in the states’ bars also depends on the liquor license of that particular bar. Some bars/clubs here in Florida don’t close until 5 or 6 AM the next morning. At least they used to before the pandemic. A lot of the restaurants that have bars stay open a little later, like TGI Fridays, Applebee’s and Outback Steakhouse for example.

Others have to close due to the chances of violence being alot higher after 2-3 a.m. there's plenty of "hole in the wall" bars(pubs) that never close. I was at one during hurricane Katrina until it floated away. We had a blow up mattress and floated away with as many bottle as we could float on it while we grabbed the sides 🤣🤣🤣 pornhub isn't all we're known for here. In the US we have a ton of variety and terminology. 1.) Bar - just any old shit hole with shit beer, cheap, shit food. 2.) Pub - Irish or English emulated. Pub Chip Shop is a local one by me. Tons of people will go there for Euro-soccer and rugby events. 3.) Gastro-Pub - More expensive than a bar with far more craft beer and they are known for very well done $$ food that pairs well with beer. 4.) Taprooms - Usually attached to actual breweries where all their beers are on tap.. It's slowly also a Taproom if a group of breweries are featured in it, kind of like a buddy system under one roof.. heavy on local beers but can also have larger craft beers. Only craft beers, high alcohol beers (8-10+% ABV), variety of styles. Not uncommon for 30+ taps with different beers. 5.) Breweries - We have a ton of micro breweries and even nano breweries. A lot of experimental beers can be found.. everyone working there is very passionate about brewing beer and the staff are involved in the process of making the beer or at least taste-testing etc.. A lot of the time there are food trucks, and these are a great place to get growlers filled etc.. I have breweries around me that are massive and hold hundreds of people or ones that have 6 seats at a bar in a little hole in the wall. This is by no means an official list or definition but just in my area the terms my friends and I will use to describe where we will be going to drink and how much we expect to pay etc.. It is not uncommon at all to go to a brewery and pay $8+ a pint (not including tips).. or on the other hand go to some shithole place having college night and paying $1-$2 for miller/coors/bud . The options are limitless in the US and I've traveled overseas alot and people still make fun of American Beer. Our craft beer scene in the US is not even remotely on the same wave-length of anywhere else in the world. I struggle to even find a half-decent IPA in many countries, or what they do have and call an IPA is not even close.

The thinking about learning how to drink, in America, is that if you're going to learn how to drink at age 16 or 18, you should do it at home with your parents, so that you are properly supervised. And yes, it's completely legal for your parents to give you alcohol at home at those ages. (But there's a social taboo against doing so when visitors are over to your house, especially in the middle class.) A lot of parents *don't* teach their kids how to drink, because they don't want their kids to drink; but that's a cultural issue, not a legal one. Themed bars can definitely have themes other than Irish or English. There are sports bars, honky-tonk bars, sports bars, sixties themed bars, eighties themed bars, sports bars, bars themed after television programs (Star Trek, Cheers, ...), nautical themed bars, sports bars, medieval-tavern themed bars, more sports bars, ... did I mention sports bars?

So, you can get a learners permit at 15 and a provisional license at 16. The drunk driving incidents were primarily caused by various different states having different drinking ages. Kids would drive over to states where they could drink, get shitfaced, and then drive home. In the US we have a thing that would put the dart throwing activity in its place as far as drunk people throwing sharp objects are concerned. Some bars here have axe throwing. It is probably about the same price for a pint over here. Our pints are smaller and cost $5 on the low end. At time of writing $5 is roughly 4 quid. You can get cheaper at happy hour, but that's a specific time frame. I typically tip about 50% at bars because I'm saving money going there and not to other places where I'd spend a lot more money.

8:32 - "That's if everybody takes their test at 16" - The US is very very car centric. It's incredibly hard to get around without a car. I'm sure not _everyone_ takes their driver's test at 16, but I would put it in the 90% range. If you live in a larger, compact city area with plenty of public transportation (like New York or Chicago, not Los Angeles), you can probably get away with not getting a license, but just about everywhere else you need a car and a license to do.... well.. anything. After school job? School activities? Hanging with friends? Cars are just necessary. Out here in farm country, it's not unusual to see 14-year-olds bringing stuff in or buying things for the farm at the co-op in the old beater truck.

I'd say that surprisingly in more urban or suburban settings, it is becoming more common to see kids postpone getting their license. My daughters were 17 and 18 when they got their license. I practically had to force my then 18 year old to get her license ... she wasn't opposed to it, she just wasn't in a hurry to get it. She was able to get a ride to pretty much anywhere she needed to go. I had a car waiting for her in the garage for over a year and that still wasn't motivation for her. I thought my girls might be an exception ... except that I routinely heard the same from other parents I know. Same with my nieces/nephews. We all had the same story ... what the heck is going on with our kids, when we were their age, we were in line at the DMV/BMV the second we were old enough, that was a rite of passage.

@@johnmininger7472 It's like money -- why spend mine when I can spend yours? Stop driving them and they'll either get motivated or they'll get a job so they can afford Uber. It's also possible they're afraid. A lot of younger people I know just don't like unknown factors, so they tend to be avoidant. But, Gen X and the bridge Gen Ys were kinda the last of the independence minded kids. Younger generations, including nieces and nephews, just don't really see the need to leave home, drive, get a job, etc as long as their parents are willing to take care of them. Remember, this is the result of helicoptering and bubble wrapping. The older Gens never encouraged independence the way they themselves were encouraged. It's unfair to the young people

You can get a driving permit at 14, driving license at 16. The primary reason for age 21 is because of driving. Unlike European drinkers, most people in America drive a car and they have great distances to drive. For instance, here in Iowa, if someone lives in Treynor and goes drinking after work in Council Bluffs Iowa or Omaha Nebraska...they have a 25 mile drive to get home.
