Shapes are a fundamental element of visual language, in fact, it's not possible to make a picture without them! In this lesson we’ll introduce shape language, the idea that shapes have “personalities” and can convey different ideas. Simplifying shapes will be a crucial skill you’ll need to tackle as an artist, as it makes it easier to judge proportions, fix mistakes, invent new poses, among many other reasons. As you get better with basic shapes you’ll be able to build on complexity by combining simple shapes and adding relevant details to design engaging and recognizable characters or objects.
Prioritizing and learning these concepts is essential and if you want to get better with shapes consider getting the premium course. In the premium course we’ll have additional lessons covering both accuracy and design so that you can speak with shapes in the visual language - proko.com/drawing

One thing I always wonder, is a drawing supposed to contain all 3 types of shapes or is it normally 1 dominant shape and then some other ones throughout the piece?
@glagly7481
@glagly7481 Жыл бұрын
@@amrider2099No. There can be some drawings where you only use squares and circles or triangles and squares. You just have to observe the thing you want to draw and break it down into the shapes that make that thing you are trying to draw what it is.

As always, your videos here are "simple to understand", with "steps" and "demonstration". I hope your courses will do the same, I don't like "blah blah or watch the pro do it" (I'm kind of a "practical person"). Thank you Proko and team! 🥰

In geometry, shapes define the outline or the boundary of an object. A shape is defined for an object or any external surface or boundary, apart from other properties such as colour or material type. For example, a blue ball, made up of rubber materials is round in shape. lol

How does shape language translate into types of artsyles. Namely anime, Sofia the first artsyle perhaps the avatar the last airbender artsyle
@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV 2 ай бұрын
Avatar is the clearest to see it in, of the things you mentioned. The shapes are often split between the types of benders and their personalities often match those divisions. Think of the shapes of Bolin, boxy, wide and stalwart. Reliable. Compared to Zuko. In the start, he's pointy and this matches the sharpness of his personality. As he softens as a person, so do the shapes that make up his design and hairstyle. The flowing nature of waterbending is present in Katara's design. He bangs flow down over her face like little streams. Her clothes, while baggy, flow and that same hanging weight like her bangs do. Characters don't have to be like their shapes. You can subvert expectation and make some cool characters that way too!

And don't forget the "you'll never be ready so draw today" tip. Which pretty much means absolute insanity, I need basics to start drawing but I need to start drawing to learn basics. I could, of course, keep sucking, I'm not shy of that, but then repeating suck-works anchors the mistakes in my brain. So to not get used to making things bad I need to learn how to make them good. And learning is the problem because I can keep learning forever and never be ready. See the loop? Can't break it. Unless you have talent and catch things fast and draw at least something well from the age of 7. When your mind is flexible. I need to draw simple but to do that I need to learn everything. Before that I can't draw simple, so I can't learn well. If I knew everything I would be able to learn fast but there would be nothing to learn. And I need to actually be productive and get a job instead of practicing 24\7 for the next 40 years I have left. So, ok, putting it simple, what should I do? Draw simple and wrong since I don't know how? Or study the fundamentals that would never be enough since I don't seem to learn anything, no matter how many things I draw? If I keep drawing simplified structures and get them wrong my mind will remember only doing it wrong. And keep repeating the mistakes over and over and over. And without simple I can't draw complex right. So what was first - a chicken or an egg?
