7 Ways To Fix Curling Leaves On Your Pilea Peperomioides (Chinese Money Plant)

Curling leaves are a really common issue with Pilea peperomioides houseplants. Most people love these plants for their round, flat leaves, and it can be disappointing to see the leaves curling.
There are a lot of conflicting opinions about what causes curled leaves. I share my experiences of growing this plant, my thoughts on why they get curled leaves, and how to fix each problem.

Just reading the comments and am relieved to see that I am not the only one struggling with this plant. It seems every KZfaq channel raves about how easy this plant is to grow. I’ve killed two, and all but given up on my third one who is now in ICU. 😞

And mine is hard to kill. Left the plant to its fate last year when I was on vacation for 10 weeks during the summer. Came home and looked a little sad, got water and it looked healthy again 😁 Now the plant has got some bent leaves and I feel like I've tried everything to get rid of it. Feels like the plant doesn't like me 😩

Agree with you I use to like it a lot so I bought me one then within a week or so leave started to curl and lay just died on me so I bomb me the second one same thing happened to the point that I don’t even wanna bother with them. I don’t know why plants look so nice of the store but soon as we take them home, they start looking like shit and they give you proper care because I own more then 300+ tropical indoor plants pretty much all aroids.. buy literally gave up on pepperonias and Calatheas.. they look nice ad all but they too hard to take care of. I have tried everything so now I just don’t even bother taking him home even if they look so nice and all but I just don’t wanna take it for what to kill it so I agree with you jack!!😁

It took me almost 1 year to figure mine out. Now she gives me at LEAST 1 new leaf a week and has 8 babies ❤ Pot size is important not too big, I bottom water every 2 weeks. It sits in front of a window facing south gets indirect sunlight all day. Hopefully that helps. Good luck!

Explains a lot about why my pilea leaves are all funky, curvy and wavy in all ways... will let my plant dry out more before watering again. It’s been quite tolerant and patient with me as I figure out plant care issues. Thanks! :)

.. Thank you, that info was really needed :) Now I know where to put it and how to treat it right.. I've got two of them, and they have been moving around my house for the right place to be.. now I just wonder what kind of soil they have since it feels so heavy and clayish.. I had to subscribe so I can find my way back here when I need a rewind :-D

Another thing to watch out for when the leaves are curling downwards: root rot! I accidentally watered my pilea way too much after interpreting her dropping leaves as a sign of thirst. So naturally I watered even more and it only got worse to the point that the leaves were super curly. When I finally understood what was going on, I got worried about root rot, checked it and voilà: the tips were already brown and squishy. So watch out and don't water those beauties too much!

of all the plants that i grew indoors this chinese money is worst for me to grow.I prefer to grow indoor plants that are not hard to grow in my condo. I have lots of sun maybe the inside of my suite is dry. Thank you for your demonstration I enjoy it and educational as wel l. TORONTO

Great tips. I'm having issue with my two they are struggling.The leaves turn down even after watering. I don't know what they needs since bring them inside.You mentioned they like it cooler I'm going to move them to cooler area of the house. I thinking should I put them in a close terrarium until spring?

I've noticed mine got sunburnt when put in too much light this summer even though I I not put them in direct sunlight. Now that it's cloudier I think they can manage more direct light. Don't know why the leaves get curly. I notice the soil gets rather dry even after a day of watering.

I think my problem is in my plant room that is about 80° F. Leaves are curling down.

I have had mine four 3months and it now has brown on edges of leaves and some black edges under the leaves. Could this be thrips even though I do not see any on or under the leaves. It also has some discolored spots.

It could be that you put it in direct sun light which in result burned the leaves. If that's the case then move it a bit a way from the sun

I think my pilea had and have all the problems he talks. My problem is i tried and still try in alls places of my house ..and not are place the plant likes. She grow fine and green...but with all the leaves curlies ..and she not gives any new plant . Im not know what more to do.

Mine are struggling.. they only get like 2 new leaves in months, very sparse, old leaves turn dark black and fall off, new leaves are yellow.

Check the roots for rot, and use fertilizer.

My freaking soil won't dry! I changed the soil out for better drainage and it's still drenched. Don't know what to do

The pot has to have drainage holes. Terra cotta pots work well because they also let the soil dry out from the sides and not just the top.

Ok this is my problem with this planet!! The leaves don't curl and I think I've figured it out but everything just falls off all the way to the stalk!? Couple of times , they say to squeeze the leaves to see if it needs watered and it all just falls off? But, at me he same time it is putting out new leaves!? Very small but they are there!!?

Try watering with filtered water or rain water and not tap water
