Mental health isn’t discussed as much as physical health, but it absolutely should be. In support of May’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re highlighting these raw and inspiring stories from our guests about their very personal struggles with anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. Learn how these high-achieving people got through some of their darkest moments in this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu.
NOTE: If you are in a crisis, or think you may have an emergency, call your doctor or 911 immediately. If you’re having suicidal thoughts, call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to talk to a skilled, trained counselor at a crisis center in your area at any time (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline). If you are located outside of the United States, call your local emergency line immediately. This content is not intended to be a substitute for professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Tom Bilyeu it would be nice if we got back to being nice to our fellow human beings and cut that crap ‘of push yourself no matter what, abuse your body, mind and soul - that’s the ultimate growth’. I feel that Tom moved away from being empathetic to being punishing. Very subjective opinion

“To progress again, man must remake himself. And he cannot remake himself without suffering. For he is both the marble and the sculptor. In order to uncover his true visage he must shatter his own substance with heavy blows of his hammer.” To contribute, even in a humble manner, to the construction of the new City, these ideas must invade the population as the sea infiltrates the sands of the shore. Our renovation can come only from the effort of all. From time to time, among the billions of human beings who have successively inhabited the earth, a few were bora endowed with rare and marvelous powers, the intuition of unknown things, the imagination that creates new worlds, and the faculty of discovering the hidden relations existing between certain phenomena. The cell is immortal. It is merely the fluid in which it floats that degenerates. Renew this fluid at regular intervals, give the cells what they require for nutrition, and as far as we know, the pulsation of life can go on forever. It is about MOMENTUM! When I was suicidal taking a five minute walk was unbearable but it was about doing a five then the next day a seven and a ten minute walk then now a year later I'm running miles again! It is a fight that can be won but knowing it's going to be those little bits layered until you can run again. It's literally a game of momentum. I'm in the happiest place I've ever been in my life but how I got here was questioning how I got so low and building momentum with honor for where I was.

As a person who suffers from depression, seeking help is vital and crucial to overcoming it. However, therapy and psychiatry has only temporarily pacified the emotional states. They can't solve the problems that cause depression. What I have found that works is to associate with the right people, find mentors, and build yourself back up with constant unrelenting effort to better yourself and your relationships. Drugs and therapy are pain killers, but they don't heal wounds.

The more we can feel safe and express our emotions then nuroplasticity does the rest . patience and grit is already there as we are survivors.

Thank you so much for this video. Brendan made me realize that maybe the reason it is so hard to take action is because I feel so hopeless. That no matter what I do I already lost... Powerful stuff, I suffer daily with depression and seeing people who don't just say "pick your self up" I can connect with. Thanks for making this and treating it in an adult fashion, without any quick fixes. each day is a battle, but if you keep the little stuff moving on, it helps to build a foundation for facing the day. It was as if Mel had been storking me as every word it home!

I’ve been struggling with depression for years, but the last few weeks have been some of the most difficult of my life. I don’t know if I’ve ever really been okay. I have had a tendency to dismiss advice from some of these gurus because they seemed like they’d maybe had some struggles - but that overall, we weren’t dealing with the same stuff. Hearing these people be honest about feeling suicidal made me feel like I’m not alone, and maybe I can get my life together too. Thank you for sharing sharing these real, raw stories. It means more to me than you know.

@@nakulmanoj4373 I’ve always hated myself in pictures and I never knew why. I know now that my sadness always showed through in pictures. When you’re not happy with yourself or situation your misery will show up in pictures. When I’m happy and full of life my pictures don’t look half bad. Anyway I hope you’re feeling better today. Depression is a terrible affliction, but we can learn to deal with it if we just try.

This show is so exponentially stunning that I feel as though my head is too small for my expanded brain from the information shared by every extraordinary person you interviewed today. It’s as though every person, including you could clearly see everything I’m currently dealing with as well as where I’ve been and everything that’s happened to me. When I began therapy in September 2017 I was CERTAIN that every thought, belief and experience I had was in isolation. No one else in the universe could possibly comprehend my inner world. Obviously I was wrong. 😮 thank God I was wrong. Thank God for my friend Stephanie who said she loved me, but I needed help she couldn’t provide. I respected her advice and called a domestic violence hotline-42 years AFTER I was sexually assaulted, beaten and victimized in ways that are difficult to imagine. I was 15 then. I thought I’d dealt with it, moved 2200 miles away from my abuser, moved on, gotten a degree, career, married, being a mom, etc. and I was over it. I wasn’t. Like one of your guests said, “you can’t hide or run away from whatever your issue is” because it’s always there influencing every decision you’ve made for the past whatever your number of years are. It’s hard, it’s not over, but there are days when I can actually see a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train! I still deal with chronic pain from a catastrophic accident in 1987 as well as PTSD and crippling anxiety. The difference now is when I go to sleep, I don’t pray to not wake up because of the pain. I know eventually the pain will lessen and I will feel better (replacing both knees helped A LOT). I’ve rambled, however I want to thank you for caring about others and making a difference. Thank you. Please don’t stop what you’re doing! I’ve shared so many of your shows with the pain mgmt doctor, he’s disappointed when I don’t bring a new one at my visit! Don’t quit, keep moving, seek help and do the work.

It's hard. I've picked myself up so many times over the past 20years but each time it gets less hopeful. I want to succeed and achieve. I work hard and I try and do everything right, eat well, exercise, positive thinking etc but right now I feel like it's a losing battle because I can't beat my mind for long enough to have consistency. I don't see my mind getting any better, any more focused on something long enough for me to be successful.

For me, diet is a major key to managing depression. It's tricky because it has a delayed effect of 1-2 weeks before sliding down if I'm eating poorly or regaining balance if I'm getting more fruit, veg & fish. Group therapy was very helpful when my situation was severe, hearing other people from all walks of life tell their stories of daily struggles & success let me know I wasn't alone (much like this video). Also in group, it was much easier to identify the mental tiger traps the disease sets for others than it was in my own life. Once I realized these, I could look at myself & see how my mind was favoring an unrealistic negative reality.

Tom, thank you so much for rising to the call to help and inspire others. I met you briefly at Funnel Hacking live a few years ago and you are such a light man. I’m so so grateful that you’ve gone through everything you have to make things like this available for the rest of us

I thought that this was a very good and helpful video. Especially because it brings this subject to the table. A subject which has been taboo for forever and which is so widespread. While we freely discuss the many debilitating symptoms of mental illness, depression & anxiety, which usually includ alcohol, drug or food abuse.. the root cause is seldom addressed.

Extreme Ownership helped me! Jocko Willink's book. Also therapy, and being able to form habits such a realizing that my initial reaction shouldn't be on that initial feeling. I understand now that if the situation does not call for me to make an immediate decision, I can prolong my reaction. This has saved me hours of apologizing, hurt feelings of my wife and kids, and my stress levels have plummeted! Thanks for all you do Tom!

Another issue is diet! Diet can help a lot of folks! GMO and junk food has caused a lot of mental health issues. Also something called PURPOSE! Tons of folks don't have a purpose, don't have anything to do due to the government free money and are bored and depressed out of pure laziness... I pray god can bless them to seek purpose...

It's only a problem if you are apathetic. Invest all your time and energy in self-development, learning things that are either a) helpful or b) interesting for you, building positive habits & strong connections with people and, most importantly, pursuing various things to find your strengths, find your interests, find your calling!

I dont know how people recover. Just being around people makes everything more difficult. Ive been battling and overcoming it and ending up further in depression then before i faced it. My obsessive thoughts and anxiety have made life a living hell. Medications have made things worse and refuse to ever be medicated again after 3 failed attempts. Having my children seems to be the only thing that gives me purpose to keep hoping and retrying. Nothing else. It feels like it will never get better at 32 years of age and trying everything i could think of with a positive outlook on the end goal. Its so difficult to put into words. Its like living in hell knowing you have so much to offer and feeling sucidal soon after i gain momentum and think things are getting better. Knowone understands in my life. Just needed to vent. I keep praying one of these times when i pick myself back up again i will see real success with this fucking mental bullshit
