In this video I mill six logs for a customer. Three cherry two maple and one oak totaling 700 board feet. The customer even comes along to be my swamper.

Swamp Man Pete did a fantastic job. We were both tuckered out after a long day out at the mill. The heat was oppressive but we carried on and he was able to keep up. You have a great week Terry and thank you so much for the comment.

Awesome looking cherry. 4 blades is a lot or even 3 I would have guessed 2 blades also. Thanks jerry!

I was surprised as well that I went through four blades. I originally only brought out two blades. We would have made it in three but as you know I hit that log stop. I washed the logs but I'm assuming I didn't get all the dirt out. Thanks Mark for the comment and you have a great week my friend.

I haven't heard 'swamper' in a long time. It is the term my Dad used for the guy getting the chain around the logs and hooking to the tractor...luckily I was more often than not the tractor driver. 😁

Nice looking lumber, customer should be pleased. Finding that damaged tooth/teeth can be a real challenge. Just reset, resharpen and move on. Not sure what temps are in your area but here we have upper 80s and low 90s. Way too hot for this old guy to mill past about 10am.

@@jims6308 good afternoon jim. I did actually find the tooth that is whacked out what happened to kind of got pinned over so it was actually pretty simple to find. Usually like you said I can't find them. It's only in the low 80s today. We've been getting a lot of rain and temperatures only in the mid to upper 70s. But I guess it's supposed to change this week.

Blades can always be sharpened, but at least they're not breaking!!! I also am looking into changing the engine on my Norwood, for a couple of reasons. One is for the electric start, it will cost me almost more to upgrade the Briggs than it is to swap engines, and if I do that, I might as well go bigger also!! The muffler and exhaust is an issue, and making sure you don't go too big that it has a larger PTO shaft, that you have to get a larger and quite expensive clutch!

Well I was feeling a bit cockey lately lol. I've not broken any blades in a several weeks. two blades broke. today. I've been setting them with the torque wrench and I checked the bar torque wrench to my click torque wrench and I was talking them at 17 and a half foot pounds. Broke to today and I suspect it's because they were older blades maybe three or four sharpenings. Darn it. As for the motor yes you got to take all those items into account. I know I can get an 18 HP that is the same bolt pattern and shaft high and diameter. I think it would definitely be worth it. Thanks Tim for the comment and sorry about the long-winded response LOL

Good swampy morning Jerry. Great video, a guy could get spoiled real easy having a swamper. Beautiful Cherry and Maple. Do you ever quarter saw ? Personally I don’t, 99% of my milling is for me. It’s been hot, humid and dry here. Mid 90’s🥵, we’re getting the leftovers from the hurricane which we will be grateful for. Hitting the log stop😳, haven’t done that in awhile. Your friend will be buying a mill now that he has had a taste, or maybe he thinks it’s more work than he thought. Have a good day friend

Good afternoon Mike sorry about the delay on the response. I was out at The Sawmill today as well. It's a great place to be that's for sure as we know. I don't do much quarter sawing. But I do resaw the boards that come out of the middle into quarter sawn boards. it's kind of cheating though lol. Oh what I'd give to have a swamper full time. I can get so much more done. The oppressive heat has moved past us and no longer in the mid-90s any longer, mid to upper 80s is much better and tolerable for me. Dang that log stop got me. We were cutting 2 in and then switched to an inch and a half on the fly. My bearings on the top of my log stops are exactly an inch and a half. So I nicked the top of them LOL. Thanks for the comment Mike and stay cool. That he creates quite the swamp ass effect LOL

Nice stack of lumber Jerry. your days sound very much like mine. It seems there is always some issue to contend with. I put an 18 hp engine on my DIY mill and I think I'm still under powered. I think if I had more horse power I might get a couple more cuts but at some point the cut quality heads south. I hate wavy cuts and change blades pretty often. The logs I'm cutting on my current job are terrible dirty and blades dull rather quickly. Can you say with any certainty the Ripper 7 blades cut any better than a 10 degree blade? I've heard mix opinions and considering testing 5 or 6 of the 7 degree blades. 99% of what I mill is oak or ash. Have a great week Ed.
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft 14 күн бұрын
@@jbarlazye911 good evening Ed. I have a box of 10 degrees and only use them on pine and poplar. I can't say definitively that the 7° cut better on hardwood than 10. My experience suggests that the sevens seem to cut better. I know there are some that even run 4° blades on the hard and frozen wood. I've never done a comparison side by side with sevens and 10s and tested different parameters. That would be an interesting test to see how well they hold up and how fast they cut. I just might have to do that for us.

I bought the OS18 and three months later I still have not got it assembled. Manual instructions wrong, parts missing or incorrect parts. Emails from Norwood claiming I'm assembling it wrong, even though I follow the manual. Their illustrations in the manual are not very clear. Since I am mechanically inclined, I have sorted out the mistakes in the Manual. You know where to click to se my videos. At least Norwood/Frontier is attempting to make things right.

Darn sorry to hear that. The instruction booklet for the os27 was pretty sketchy and many thought it was useless. I too have an engineering background so it wasn't too bad putting it together. Happy milling. I'm almost 4 years on my mill and had nothing but good experiences.
