BR Britannia Class 7MT 4-6-2 no 70013 Oliver Cromwell on the Railway Touring Company "Wandering 1500" to Sheringham and the NNR. Tour should have departed from London Liverpool Street, but was switched to Kings Cross due to gauging issues. First we catch Ollie at Meldreth, where in 1952 Ollies sister loco "Britannia" pulled the the Royal Train carrying King George VI's body through the station on its journey from Sandringham to London. Residents gathered on the platform to pay their last respects to the King. Then a water stop allows us to get to Lakenheath in Suffolk, where only 8 trains a week actually stop! In 2013 only 104 people used the station, last year a massive 500 people used those 8 trains......

I had the sheer joy of a holiday trip from Liverpool Street to Cromer pulled by Britannia in the mid 50s with silver service restaurant car (and the soup barely moved in the dish). At Norwich the train split and our part was taken over by an 0-6-0 tender engine for the onward section to Cromer. The Britannia driver claimed over 90mph top speed but that might have been bravado to excite the train spotters. Part of the old Cromer station is still there but mostly the area is now a supermarket. Great video, great memories, thank you.

Might well have been my father on the shovel/regulator (he qualified up mid 50s) out of Liverpool street. His fav loco was 70037 "Hereward the Wake"

Hi Tom, reason for being so late was because the man with a fire tanker to fill 70013 up with water at Mark Teys loop, he lost his keys and couldn't get into range. We then had to struggle onto Witham with hardly any water, took 20 minutes for the tanker to get to the station, took 20 minutes to take the water, and left Hour and a half late, but managed to make up 30 mins. Wandering at Speed! If you're on about the 'sideways' movement of the locomotive, it's called Hunting! Hunting is when a locomotive 'rocks' from side to side at speed. It's due to the Motion (the piston thrust) on either side of the locomotive being (deliberately) not applying thrust at the same time. This makes the locomotive alternatively push it wheel flanges against the rail on either side of the track, producing the rocking motion when viewed from the front. It's called Hunting...

Err no, I was not "on about the "sideways" movement of the locomotive". Had you read the intro you would have seen the tour was called " Wandering 1500".

Its called a "differential speed restriction" Different speed limit for different classes, in this case (the rule varies according to local rule book) I believe 45 MPH for freight and 75 for passenger traffic.

SP is for Sprinters e.g. Class 158/9s, HSTs and above can do 75mph. Anything else below a sprinter classification would have to do 45mph including Ollie.

Great performance from Ollie and crew and nice can work too Jeff. The sound of Ollie receding into the distance on the second clip was very clear. Were you using an external mic? Most enjoyable, thanks from Ken

These are special heritage tours or excursions powered by steam trains, but they are run on the main railway routes, sharing the tracks with modern motive power.

trainzguy101 We have an "open network" policy. A single government entity owns and operates the railway network and infrastructure (Network Rail) , and Train Operating Companies (TOC's) pay a franchise to use certain routes on a daily scheduled basis, or pay one off fees to use the network on a non regular scheduled basis. So TOC's hire Steam Locos to run one off excursions. Thats why you get lots of steam videos from the UK, because there are about 200 main line steam excursions a year.

Ok after viewing a few steam loco vids (beautiful as they are), can someone explain the diesel loco at the back? Cheating? A little extra pushing power? what
@MrKnowwun
@MrKnowwun 8 жыл бұрын
+Gordon Urquhart Firstly if you peruse my vids, you will see plenty with no diesel on the back. Sometimes its there but just dead weight as in the lakenheath scene. Its there for various reason, a quick shove on a busy main line to get acceleration required by tight modern timetables, sometimes to provide electric power for heating carriages, and sometimes for shunting the stock around at the other end, you can't turn steam locos round in many places any more. Sometimes its just plain insurance.

Diesel is only in tow for train heating,required shunting of stock,and should the lead loco need a shove. As a former driver,I used to enjoy days as the 'assist' loco. Great video.

Personally I prefer the diesel loco at the rear of the train- they used to put it immediately behind the steam loco. It's there for 2 reasons- 1 backup in case (perish the thought) the steam loco fails as there'll be an alternative loco to get the Special out of the way of scheduled services (*BIG* financial penalties for blocking scheduled services) and 2 it provides electric heating for the carriages as the steam heating system was done away with years ago. HTH.
