7029 'Clun Castle' Makes a Deafening Departure from Kings Cross! First time since 1967! - 07/10/23

October 2023 saw the 56th anniversary of Tyseley's 7029 'Clun Castle' working a pair of Ian Allan Railtours on the East Coast Mainline from Kings Cross, one to Leeds and two weeks later one to York. As part of the Castle 100 celebrations in 2023, Vintage Trains ran a special with 7029 from Kings Cross for the first time since 1967, the first time a Castle had been to Kings Cross in preservation and only the third time since 'Pendennis Castle' took part in the performance trials against the LNER A1s in April 1925.
Starting at Coleshill, the train would be piloted by Tyseley's Clas 47 47773 to Nuneaton and then up the ECML to Wembley where it would run round and allow 'Clun Castle' to draw the train forward. A twitch across to the ECML at Copenhagen Jn and a reversal at Hornsey and the train rolled back into Kings Cross. A short pause and the train would charge down the ECML to Peterborough, where it would take water, turn right and take the GNGE Joint Line to Lincoln. The return run went via Hykeham and Collingham to Newark. From there the train followed the ECML back to Kings Cross with another water stop at Peterborough. The reverse of the outward would take the train back to Coleshill.

I really enjoyed this. Ive not seen Clun Castle since 1968. I was an apprentice at York Motive Power and she was parked up in the old steam shed. I think she was awaiting collection having being bought. Very pleased she is still running.

That is so impressive. I know change was inevitable, but I feel that we definitely lost something precious when the steam era ended. I have fond memories of trainspotting in and near Harpenden and seeing the Midland compound 1000 in maroon livery go through and the way the ground shook when an express went through the station at full chat.

Same here , biked miles to train spot . Now in Spain just 140 m South of the British line , sadly now gone "El tren de Las Inglesas " In his M.N days from Gandia port he used it , you may see on the Boliflex films the village "Gaiyanes '

So lovely to see Clun Castle still in great shape.I first saw her in the late 70's when my cousin took me to Didcot Steam Centre and I was allowed on the footplate. I write this whilst looking at the large print of a painting of her by the artist Cuneo sitting just above my desk. Still my favourite loco, along with Burton Agnes Hall.

The Castles have always been known for their surefootedness. In 1925, 'Pendennis Castle' took 16 coaches out of Kings Cross unassisted without slipping! I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.

The Great Steam Era was a noisy, filthy and often uncomfortable experience... It was also GREAT fun, and FULL of anticipation! A reminder of a time when setting off on a journey by rail could still promise to be eventful. The unforgiving sound of raw power of the steam engine and the visual impact of the whole train's style and construction says "We're on our way!"

In my train spotting days of the late fifties I used to see loads of these locos sitting on Royal Oak station. I lived a short walk from Kings Cross and used to like standing on platform 10 watching the A4s. This one looks like it should be on platform 9 and a half.

The raw power of steam is really quite something. From a dead stop to just *moving*, with seemingly no effort at all. Union Pacific's Big Boy demonstrated this recently when it helped push a stalled freight train over a hill. Realize this was a full sized North American freight (a couple hundred cars and several thousand feet in length). It nosed up to the stalled train and just *pushed*... and it moved. Steam is amazing.

@simills6535 It's just there for security in case the steam loco fails - this train is running on a very busy mainline, so it is important to keep the train moving and to schedule so as to not affect other services running behind it. As someone else commented, the engine is idling and is just dead weight to the steam loco - makes it's departure from the station even more impressive, as that diesel loco is probably the equivalent weight of four fully-laden coaches.

As the son of a proud LMS man, I have to say, I think these GWR locos, are without question the most beautiful evocation of the locomotive engineers art. I like the Kings and the Manors, but for some reason I can't fathom, to me, the Castles are it!

That looked brilliant As a kid we lived in London a short time and I saw GWR locos at Paddington passing on the Underground. I wonder if I saw one of the Ian Allan Railtours in Yorkshire as one day out watching trains a GWR hauled train went under the bridge we were on. My friends had never seen anything like it. I said it is one with two chimneys from London. The safety valves were blowing as it went under the bridge. One of my best memories of steam in its last years.

@@Milepost90.25 I feel very lucky we lived in London up to 1963 and I saw Kings Cross with A4's which must of been their last year in service before they were transferred to Scotland, regularly went past Paddington, we lived on Ladbrooke Grove, saw Euston with Duchess and the Golden Arrow going out at the side of our train when I guess we were going to Brighton. Everything was run down grimy but locos were still kept reasonably clean. I was enjoying my day out at GCR on this day with great memories there seeing the demonstration goods trains and passenger trains passing them on the double track, the only line that can replicate what I remember from all those years ago. Sure would of liked to of seen this train but can't be everywhere so it was good to watch your video Thank you

Fantastic thank you so much. We love our steam trains, can’t quite feel the same about diesel. We were lucky to ride them back in the 60s and we had the tradition of waving to steam trains wherever we saw them, usually passengers waved back too. x

It must have been great to see regular working steam even in its decline in the 60s. Still applies today; passengers on a steam special often wave out the windows. There's something joyful and uplifting about a steam train! I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.

When I was a child in Yorkshire in the 1950s and 60s we use to have holidays in London and always travelled on the Yorkshire Pullman into King'sCross. Nice to see the old Pullman coaches as well as a steam locomotive.

What a considerate driver, no cylinder drain cocks open ruining your photo or video. I don't get why some drivers keep them open for so long so the loco is almost past you when you're trying to get a decent pulling away shot. I'm sure some do it on purpose!

Thats purely down to driving style, as well as how long a loco has sat stationary- the longer it sits, the more condensate builds up, which in turn takes longer to clear. Im certain youd rather be able to take any picture of a loco, than have it irreparably damaged as the result of a hydraulic lock in the steam chest!

It is a pity that the first shot inside King's Cross included that vile "See it, Say it, Sorted" announcement. I hope that they don't play that on the railtour. Never mind, the rest of the video made up for it. Starting with D1755 pulling into the station- Looked great in that livery. And then Clun Castle- immaculate and pulling away without slipping. Nicely driven and a real treat to see and hear.

Having been on a Vintage Trains tour, I can say they do not play the "See it, Say it, Sorted". Not a huge diesel fan but I must agree, D1755 did look rather good. If 'Clun Castle' had slipped I would've been surprised! In 1925 'Pendennis Castle' took 16 coaches out of Kings Cross unassisted without slipping! Always count on a Castle to make a good sound! I hope you enjoyed the video.

@@Milepost90.25 4-6-0's are less prone to slipping than 4-6-2s when pulling away because the weight tends to press on the rear wheels of the locomotive which are driving wheels on the 4-6-0 and not the trailing wheels as on the 4-6-2

I am lucky to remember that as an everyday event. It wasn't just the engines that made each journey an adventure but the compartment corridor carriages and plush seats with prints of the highlands on the walls. Before the journey there was always the waiting room with, in winter, a well banked up coal fire, and as a child with one's mother access to the Ladies Waiting Room. Then if it happened to be dusk the porter/lamplighter went around the platforms lighting each individual lamp from the pilot light.

I'm not sure the 47 pushes at all... It's all the steam loco - The 47 is there in case the steamer fails... But I agree I bet that was an amazing sound to hear live...

The sound was the main reason I went to Kings Cross. I wasn't disappointed! 47773 was only idling. With 8 coaches, the GUV water carrier and 47773, 'Clun Castle' was well within its limits. In 1925 a single chimney 'Pendennis Castle' took 16 coaches out of Kings Cross unassisted, without slipping! I hope you enjoyed the video.

The 4-6-0 wheel arrangement allows for pretty much the entire weight of the boiler to sit on the driving wheels giving loads of adhesion. I hope you enjoyed the video.

I haven't seen King's Cross for over 43 years, and how clinically soulless it looks nowadays! Lovely Clun Castle probably couldn't recognize where it was!

I suspect the main difference from 43 years ago is that it's much cleaner! Clun Castle only hung around for about 10 mins so who knows if she had enough time to work out it was King Cross! I hope you enjoyed the video.

Listening to those even beats you can hear the advantage of inside valve motion as against trying to have inside cylinders driven by external valve gear. The Gresley pacifics were a particular horror in this respect with the long links to the inside.

The LNER certainly learned a thing or two about valve gear when 'Pendennis Castle' paid them a visit in 1925. Both methods of drive have their pluses and minuses, but a Castle sounds better! I hope you enjoyed the video.

This is some terrific footage - thank you so much for sharing! This video actually reminds me of one thing I'd love to tick off my bucket list: to ride behind a GWR castle class locomotive on a mainline rail trip! As much as I love seeing and riding behind different GWR locomotives at various heritage railways, I've always wanted to ride behind a GWR locomotive on the mainline but just never got the opportunity as the timing has never worked out for me. I've also never heard of Vintage Trains until very recently. Do you know if this is the only company that has GWR locomotives as their motive power or if other companies use them as well? I'm I've sure other companies must use them as well (not that there's anything wrong with Vintage Trains), but I am unaware of GWR motive power used with other companies, so I'd be so grateful if you could provide any more information for me. Thank you so much for sharing once again! Fantastic video!

Thank you very much. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Currently, Vintage Trains are the only operator that use GWR locomotives. Locomotive Services/Saphos Trains have got a Castle currently being overhauled, not sure when that'll be ready. So if you're after GWR mainline steam, at the moment, Vintage Trains is your best bet!

Beautiful steam engine both my grandfather and my uncle were steam men both mainline drivers I ended up as my uncles fireman working out of eastfield traction depot springburn Glasgow 1974 I would have loved to have fired a steam locomotive but I got to drive the best diesel the class 37 fantastic locomotive

Thank you very much Phil for your very kind words. I use a Panasonic HC-X1500 with an AudioTechnica AT8024 microphone. Not sure if either are still being produced anymore. I'm not at all used to filming handheld as I did at the Cross that morning, so I'm very pleased you enjoyed the video!

I am always amazed by how many different trains there are around the world. We love our train videos in Clemson, SC. What part of the world is this filmed? The 7029 is slick, we never see anything like that here.

This was filmed at Kings Cross station in London, England. Clun Castle is an excellent engine! Although not native to the line out of Kings Cross, she looked and sounded awesome! I hope you enjoyed the video.

Between 1958 and 1963 I was at Hastings Grammar School, right beside the Ore to Victoria line (between Ore and Hastings). One favourite occupation was to rush over to see which Pullman car was attached to the passing train - they all had names like Barbara, Jane, etc. I noticed in this video only one has a name, and a non friendly name at that - Eagle. Where has that all gone? Is it no longer PC to give Pullman car a girl's name? Another of life's joys gone.

The Belmond British Pullman carriages mostly carry girls names so I don't think it's unacceptable. I think the named Pullman in Tyseley's rake was originally called Eagle. I hope you enjoyed the video.

The diesel at the back is there to shunt the stock at the ends of the run, as seen in the video, to provide electric train heating and to give an extra push from the rear if the crew on the steam engine asks for it. I hope you enjoyed the video.

It's the sound of the flanges on the wheels scraping along the side of the railhead. Normally this makes a squealing noise, not sure what changes the sound to lose the squeal. I hope you enjoyed the video.

There is always one self interested barsteward who steps in front of the camera then looks airily into the distance as if indicating that he cares about others. 👹👹👹 So glad to see a British loco starting without huge unnecessary blasts of steam from the steam chests. It never used to happen so why has it become so infuriatingly common in recent years? It used to happen with Continental locos but nowadays they have largely stopped the practice.

It was a bit irritating, especially after he'd spoken to me whilst I was knelt down on the platform. Ç'est la vie. I was surprised by the lack of steam from the cylinders too. Normally this happens to expel any water from the cylinders that might have been carried over from the boiler while stationary. As water doesn't compress, if any did carry over, it would blow off the cylinder heads like what happened to Blue Peter in October 1994. Perhaps the water level was sufficiently low that the driver and fireman weren't worried about this? Just a thought. I hope you enjoyed the video.
