Following on from a private charter worked by Vintage Trains in November 2022, it was discovered that gauging Tyseley's GWR 4073 Class 7029 'Clun Castle' along the East Coast Mainline from Kings Cross was not too challenging; it could be done. So for the first time since 1967, and only the third time ever!, a GWR Castle Class rolled into Kings Cross on the 7th October 2023.
After a noisy departure from Kings Cross (see ), 'Clun Castle' would travel along the ECML to Peterborough, where it would pause for water prior to running along the Great Northern Great Eastern Joint Line through Spalding and Sleaford to reach Lincoln. The return run went via Hykeham and Collingham to Newark. From there the train followed the ECML back to Kings Cross with another water stop at Peterborough.
