7029 Clun Castle Shatters the Calm over the Devon Hills. G.W.R. 1Z48 10May24

It is 10 years since this Vintage Trains Tour ran over the Devon Banks to Plymouth, a celebration of a celebration of an historical event i.e. the re-run of the 1964 1Z48 run which commemorated the unofficial 102.4 m.p.h. record set by City of Truro in 1904. The tour of 2014 was headed by 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and turned out to be the last time an ex-G.W.R. Castle graced these hills; a long time to wait..... but well worth it!!
From here on I will let 7029 do the talking.
Turn the volume up and enjoy the sound of a steam locomotive, designed for the job, climbing Tigley and Rattery Banks.
Pure heaven!

Ah, Alan - you've done it again! Another treat for us 'foamers' (N American term for steam enthusiasts). You always find great locations to film from... that Rattery pan is superb, so too the way you pull the shot back to give a better idea of the distance covered. With the exception of a few modern vehicles towards the end, we'd think it was still 1950 with the Clun just out of Swindon.

Nothing wrong with this engine as the safety valve simmering all the way up both climbs! Thanks for a great video that is worth bookmarking and returning to!.

Nice bit of editing of 7029 climbing to the top of the bank. Enjoyed our chat yesterday waiting of Clun to appear. Just got back to Bath now waiting for the run from Bristol TM to Paddington. Hope you were able to capture the events of this morning.

Well @Steamclips I think the 2014 Plymouth tour or they call Remembered Z48 it was hosted by clun castle and Earl Bathurst sister 5043 Earl of Mount edgcumbe and 5029 nunney castle but with different railtours for 5029 it was anniversary limited and for 5043 it was the same railtour that provides one Zulu that operated today

Great shots 😊. Looks like, from the dirty exhaust, the quality of coal is a bit questionable. I can imagine a smoke box full of ash by Plymouth

Kazakhstan, bit smoky but absolute rocket fuel, note the safety valves feathering the whole time on both climbs.

@@cedarcam It’s not Welsh steam coal but it’s much better than the Daw Mill or Rossington we used to have back in the day. Check out some videos from the 90s if you really want to see some clag.

@@robertleah1410 I know not all our coal was really clean, and it also depends on which area it was mined in. Welsh was best and GWR locomotives design got the best out of it while our Yorkshire coal was best in LNER locomotives. Tangmere leaving Carlisle recently was filthy black which worked out well for me as motorists on a busy road slowed wondering what was going on on the railway below giving me time to cross and see her on both sides of the bridge.
