@@eloiseockert9233 I remember Madelyn Pugh and Robert Carroll Jr said they would look at life situations that gave them an idea for a episode, ie seeing someone in a Pizzeria toss the dough in the air. They would tell Lucy and she would say give me x amount of time I'll learn to do it. Madeline said Lucy would always say, Give me two weeks - like learn to roller skate, and she would not only learn to skate, but do the comedy bit on skates. When Madelyn was telling this on an interview, she had this smile, which you could feel her appreciation for Lucille Ball's talent.

Rick, also from the "Lucy Learns To Drive" episode, when the get in or out of the Pontiac, pay attention to the upper portion of the door panel where the crew has "powdered" the darker upper portion of the driver's side door to reduce light reflection. When Ricky touches the door, his fingerprints are visible. Regarding glass, in the episode "Never Do Business With Friends" after the washing machine sprays them in the Mertz's kitchen which leads to the fight and ultimately the Ricardos go back to their apartment, Fred slams the kitchen door closed and the glass in the door shatters to the floor. So that was one time where they actually DID have glass on the set!

Hey Rick, the missing windshield & vent window glass is very obvious, other shows like the Beverly Hillbillies & Green Acres comes to mind. "Rick nineg" was one of my first subscriptions when I joined KZfaq. Early episodes of "Leave It to Beaver" made me realize that the windows on TV series didn't have glass panes. The curtains in the window of the entry of the Clever's first house would always swing in and out of the window frame when the front door was slammed shut. Also, the Clever's cars were frequently driven without the windshields--I think this was the case during the opening for the last season when the Clevers were backing out of the driveway to go on a family picinic.

It's incredible how many tricks of the trade there are when shooting for TV or a movie. One of my favorites are the silent paper bags. You may notice when an actor is carrying grocery or any type paper bags they barely make a noise because they are made from a material that replicates paper but is almost noiseless. Also, clear silicone ice cubes are used in drink glasses to reduce noise. Most people would be amazed at how many "silent props" are necessary on set when filming.
@salvadorromero9712
@salvadorromero9712 Жыл бұрын
The prop cubes are used above all so that they don't melt! When you combine the hot studio lights, the need for continuity from one shot to another, how long it can all take, the extra convenience of being able to just assemble the prop and leave it rather than having to do it just before it goes out, and so forth...if just one of these factors were at play that alone would justify using fake cubes, which are used in still food photography as well. Noise factor is one reason silicon is better than plastic.

Great stuff, as usual, Rick. You definitely have "the eye". On a personal note, I am continuing to hold a good thought for you that you are slowly healing from the loss of your precious "baby". I know how tough it is to lose such a precious gift of love. You never truly get over the loss, but eventually the good memories replace the sad ones, & you end up smiling at those precious memories, instead of letting the mourning process dominate over those precious & irrepraceable memories. All the best to you, as ever.

On The Honeymooners, you can notice there's no glass in the window of the Kramden's apartment. Most noticeable, in the episode "Pardon My Glove", Ralph & Norton are hiding out of the fire escape & they're watching Alice talking with another man. When Ralph finally has all he can stand, he yells "Aha!" & then climbs through the open section of the window. However, he reaches his hand through the part where there should be glass to steady himself. He's also holding a white glove in the hand that goes through the window. It's a very obvious blooper.

An interesting concept on the Lucy Learns to Drive episode is that they had the actual vehicles on the soundstage but of course did not want to start the cars and drive them in an enclosed area. So every time you see the Pontiac in motion, you can see a cable coming from the front end of the car. This was used to pull the car along so they didn't have to actually start it and drive it.

Wow. Just found your channel. I LOVE "I Love Lucy," too. It is my all-time favorite sitcom and it was one of the first. I grew up watching the re-runs. There are a few I missed, though. And, now, seeing them complete, I realize how much was cut because TV kept adding more and more commercial time to their shows. When I young, like 7 or 8, I would watch it and if, for some reason, I had to turn off the TV before the episode finished, I would worry about it for days. LOL! Lucy would get herself into such messes! And I think I was deeply affected by her and her antics. Throughout my life, one of (what I consider) my greatest strengths is coming up with unique ideas to solve problems... not unlike Lucy. LOL!

Great video as usual Rick. Another thing you could have mentioned is the "fogging" of surfaces, such as the Pontiacs' body, so lights don't create a shine. Great episode, Rick! Filmways Productions, (Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres) would also remove car windshields on vehicles. They would also dull down the car bodies themselves, even the wheel covers, to eliminate reflections. I always cringe whenever I see what they did to Oliver Douglas’s Lincoln Continental on Green Acres. Also, Kami Cotler (“Elizabeth Walton”) pointed out on her channel that the glass was removed from the top of the candy cases in Ike Godsey’s store for the same reason, and I have to admit that I never noticed it. I guess there are all sorts of tricks used in the quest to simulate reality. Keep those videos coming, Rick!

I am amazed!! Your research into these details is mind blowing! Whether you did the research or researched someone else’s research doesn’t matter. They probably figured that no one would noticed a couple of seconds of a swinging shade cord/ring. I’ve been watching Lucy forever, starting on Black & White TVs with Rabbit Ears and never noticed any of these illusions. Thanks for digging thru and sharing all the details you find!!!!!

Great observation skills. Yes she squints her face before touching the “glass.”

Lucy looks like she wanted to parody Hedda Hopper with that outfit in the Tallulah Bankhead episode of the "Lucy/Desi Comedy Hour". Hedda was famous for her extravagant, broad brimmed hats.

Love your videos. You do a brilliant job. Would you do a video on Rickey's orchestra. Often you can see them enjoying the antics and the play marvelously. One of my favorites is when a few of the members pretend to be a girl band because of Lucy.

Hadn’t noticed that about the facial contortion before! You’ve really analyzed these in micro depth!
