The new 2019 Roush Stage 3 Mustang is an alternative to the Factory Shelby’s, based on the 2019 GT. With a 710 HP supercharged engine, coil-over suspension, and beefed up half shafts to hold the power, is it a Hellcat competitor?
Roush provided the vehicle and insurance for this review.

That should be roughly the equivelant of this car, and I think it was going to be $55k. I guess I'm mostly surprised by Matt's reaction. I wonder how he would compare it to a ZL1 in acceleration feel, which is similar in weight, and torque, but a bit less power.

Okay for starters you never put the car in track mode and turn the traction control all the way off which was probably a good reason why you weren't feeling everything the car had to give second of all you failed to mention the digital dash that also comes with the car which is an extra 2 Grand of that 79 third of all the shifter does not clunk every time you go into first gear it's usually when you go straight from 5th or 6th Gear to 1st and lastly I've never heard a grind going from first to second I think this guy was judging this car from previous roush's. I own a 2017 Roush stage 3 with 10,000 miles I only put an x pipe on it and it dynoed at 630 to the wheels yesterday and that was the phase one not phase 2 I only paid 65 for mine brand new and I'm in the process I'm putting a carbon fiber driveshaft Mantic twin disc clutch and a Barton hybrid 3 shifter I beat a 2018 Hellcat last Saturday and went door-to-door with two Lamborghini huracan's from a 50 miles an hour roll so don't tell me these cars don't have power evidently this guy does not know much about mustangs because every Mustang owner knows if you want to get the most out of it the first thing you do is put it in track mode and turn the traction control all the way off

I can't believe Ford is still using the MT82, its the worst manual gear box around and damn near ruins the Mustang which is incredible all around in GT form.... minus that pos trans. It grinds and clunks 24/7. Especially after all the complaints from owners, and I think almost every reviewer has mentioned it, its mind boggling Ford still uses it. The Tremec in the GT350 is leagues, leagues, better, it still clunks sometimes as well but not near as bad, nor the grinding and cheap feel and easily missed shifts like the MT82.

The reason Mustang HP always feels weaker is because Ford (and Roush) doesn't pay any attention to the massive weight of the wheels they put on them. When I changed the wheels on my '11 GT500, I weighed the stock wheels. They way 35 lbs each. I replaced them with wheels that weigh +/-20 lbs each. It felt like the car lost 400 lbs!! And that's probably also the reason some people complain about the GT350 feeling slow and/or weak around town. I have a GT350R, and I have zero complaints about its around town characteristics, and it doesn't feel like a slouch on the highway, either.. Lightweight wheels make a HUGE difference in how a car feels, especially in high HP cars.

Ya I feel he's turning bias to Shelby.Roush performance has made some of the handsdown best track handling and low end boom boost tunes in a warranty car ever. I seen this same model car destroy new Shelbys but I know the facts of the 2004 and earlier controversy that almost cost Roush the Ford partnership. The Roush New Edge we're dyno'd at the wheels and in 2004 the 380r and 440a got a tune so the supercharger came on a thousand rpm earlier, and the 440a ate Terminator and zo6 stock for breakfast in quarter and track. Then Ford made fake propaganda articles and videos to downplay the performance with fake test rides, videos of them roasting tires during performance tests. It was dirty. Those New Edge 360r, 380r and 440a changed the game for Ford, I truly was reason for Terminator. Then Ford didn't realize Roush was gonna last minute make 440a that dealership couldn't even test drive cause smaller pulley, exhaust, and cold air intake were installed after customer took car. So Ford had no clue the 440a spanked stock Terminator till it was too late. The 360r, 380r, and 440a we're personally my favorite Roush as they were such complete track cars and very few made, collectables now.. Anyways YES Ford makes Roush now DETUNE cars so they don't hurt Shelby sales, but that car has monster power to unleash with a few tiny tweeks

I agree with your assessment of the Roush in that it doesn't seem to put all that power down and the reason is two fold. First the heat exchange system used by Roush heat soaks very rapidly and second is the tune used is ultra conservative. If you drive it hard for a length of time the computer will pull timing and reduce the power output. I'm surprised Roush doesn't offer a better transmission for performance. The MT82 is just obsolete at this point. You should test drive a 2018/19 GT with 10 speed and a Whipple supercharger and have you mind blown it is the fastest Ford Mustang I have ever owned period.

I had a first gen S197 GT (2011) for a few years. I made sensible mods and took it to a few tracks days at Summit Point WV. Once above 3500 RPM, I was never wishing for 300+ more HP. I would be dead if I had it. Plus it returned me 21 mpg. The one problem I always had was the Getrag MT-82 and it's remote shifter. I change the clutch line from rubber to stainless, new remote shifter from Barton and even contemplated a Tremec T56 trans swap. I had had enough and sold it before 35,000 miles or right before some Ford cheapness was about to rear it's head. Out the door for $38K with heated seats and Nav was not too bad but it was all about the Coyote. That thing is so rev happy that a blower just seems senseless unless you were on a strip. Even then that bottom end better be built.

I'm not defending that package, because I think 80k would be better spent on the GT350. A lot of the 23k for the stage3 isn't performance oriented, but cosmetic upgrades. But still, you drive it like a 5.0 Windsor car... that coyote engine needs to be revved... you say your going to drive it fast, then short-shift it at 3 or 4k rpm... drive that road without letting the engine rpm drop below 6k and get back to us.

At the dealer you can play with the price of the Roush vehicles a lot. There's a lot of room for negotiation. Most people don't realize that you can option the stage 3 with the Ford Racing Aluminator motor a.k.a the stage 3 phase 3 option. Those are the Roush vehicles you want. The only downside of course being the fact that it still comes with the MT82. When it comes to the Aluminator package you CAN NOT do it cheaper yourself. The motor would run you 20k by itself and then tack on the blower. The 13-14 Stage 3 Phase 3 Roush cars were monsters. Not sure if the packaging works the same for the 19s but as far as I know know 13-17 all had the same stage 3 phase 3 as an option. Sad to see the prices on these have really gone bonkers for what you're getting. In 14 we got a stage 3 phase 3 out the door for 60k brand new. Worth every penny back then since it was all forged with the downfall being the MT82.

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned in the comments. The thing about the Roush stage 3 "Supercharged" cars is that they come boosted with a warranty. They dont want any headaches so they give the car a super conservative tune! I'm talking super conservative and safe! Weak throttle response, high rpm gets ton of timing pulled especialy when warm. Smaller pulley and tune would wake the car up and make her feel so much more aggressive! I prefer Saleen over Roush if I'm going specialty mustang's.

Just a note on the butt-dyno assessment. The Camaro SS comes in around 3,700, probably mid 3,700s with usual options. The Mustang GT is 3,800 and this one is likewise mid 3,800s with options. If you look at the weight of the added supercharger, liquid intercooler, beefed up half-shafts, big wheels, suspension, etc. that could easily add 150 lbs. So realistically, this is a 4,000 Lb. car, which will feel more sluggish than a 3,200 lb. 911, or a 3,400 lb. Vette. I'm sure that doesn't account for all of the missing horses from the stable, but that is certainly some of it. I wonder, how does it feel relative to a 707 HP Hellcat Challenger, which is a few hundred pounds heavier still?

Matt cleary you do not know how to drive a Mustang so let me help you. First, where are your driving gloves?(takes 1.5 seconds off 0-60). Second, being that it's a STAGE 3 ROUSH it has more HP than advertised, each roush emblem adds 15-40 HP, the smaller emblems are 15-25HP and the bigger ones are upwards of 40HP, possibly more. Also I noticed you didn't feed the car before opening it up... non roush Mustangs need 2-3 innocent pedestrians and stage 3 roush Mustangs needs at least 6 pedestrians to really get the full potential out of these crowd fed beasts. Refer to page 31 in the manual, you'll see instructions on how to properly hit, I mean feed the car. These three tips will not only summon the true potential but also will automatically turn the driver into Ricky Bobby

I haven't (and probably will never) driven either Mustang, but I think it will be really hard to justify buying the Roush name over the legendary Shelby name (which will come with more durable components).

Red_Bearded_Dad For the first few years, the GT500 is gonna have massive mark ups, so the price difference between the two will probably become bigger. But the GT500 is more than likely the better overall car
