I found the easiest way to get old pistons super clean is to soak them overnight in a can of Berryman's Chem Dip carband parts cleaner. That carbon in the ring groves will wipe away with a shop rag. No harsh abrasives needed.

...For the ring compressor, if you turn it over, you will see 3 little outdents, Those are there so that the compressor sits flush on the piston deck. With your method of putting the pistons in from the bottom, it should work the same, and help with getting the piston in squarely.

really awesome video and i really needed this to work on my 83 DOHC cb750sc and i really needed a guide on how to do this. the only thing wrong with mine is that it needs new piston rings and this showed me for the most part how to do it. I was wondering is it absolutely nesscary to remove the connecting rods from the crankshaft to do this or can it be done by just removing the head, cylinders and pistons while leaving the connecting rods in place?

Hi :) I have a question... Why you don't lube a cylinder surface before you will put a piston? I saw that you lube a piston rings but cylinder was dry... And second question.. Why most people use "assembly lube"? Is better than normal oil - for example 10W40?

Are you absolutely sure, that those piston rings are not the other way round? I would say, that the darker ring looks like it could hold the heat and compression better.. Also, those two angled edges in a ring transit oil for coolant.

Those piston ring will eat the walls quite fast. He didn't even gauged the piston rings to match the cylinder walls. Never seen pistons being installed from the bottom of the cylinders either.
@JCcanU

Yes he did , After he showed how to instal rings on the piston , he showed how to gap the ring in the cylinder . Most bikes you go from the bottom of a cylinder up in , Car you go top down to crank . that little piston and ring I used my fingers to get the rings in the land to cylinder .

Hey Deano, absolutely love these videos! I am doing the same with an 81 CB 650. I bought the same piston ring compressor but will be installing the pistons the old fashioned way. Is it possible to use the tool since it does not come apart and it is already connected to the engine prior to fitting the piston into the cylinder? In other words, with the rings compressed and you get the cylinder down on the piston - how do you get the compressor off?

last time I was putting pistons in I used an empty drinks can, cut to size, and a pair zip-ties that were used backwards so they didn't lock. Worked okay, just gotta watch out for the can getting stuck inside the cylinder.

Hey David - about to do reinstall my cylinders the old fashioned way on my cb750 K3. Any advice?
@daviddubuque1457
@daviddubuque1457 7 жыл бұрын
I ended up just pushing the rings together with my fingers as I slowly lowered the cylinders. I also used the hose clamp method on my first attempt, but had to take them back off to fix a gasket and a broken ring. I've also heard of using a soda can cut to size and cut lengthwise secured with a zip tie. One of these should work for you.

He made a serious mistake at the 3-piece oil ring installation !! The correct installation should be as following: Install firstly the spacer ring on the piston and put its 2 edges at piston's pin side no matter L or R and the spacer edges should not jump each other !!. Then starting opposite of this "ring spacing", place one of the two (thin rings) by turning spirally until seated properly and 1cm offset of this virtual axe !! Now place again the one of the two (thin rings) by turning spirally until seated properly and 1cm offset of this virtual axe, but not at the same side as the previous ring. So finally the 2 thin rings should be at the 150 and 210 degrees (opposite of) the spacer ring's clearance. Now install (spirally) the 2nd from top compression-scraper (dark color) ring and finally install (spirally) the top compression (chrome edged) ring!! Lubricate with plenty engine oil and turn them around several times to insure lubrication goes into rails. Now turn them to their final positions before inserting piston into cylinder, ensure all ring edges should be at left or right of piston pin and not at the same side of piston pin !! by this way you can have the best compression sealing and oil scraping back to crankcase. Never put a ring clearance at 90 degrees of piston rod (because these sides have the most gasses pressure). I hope this will help a lot, those who aren't professionals, but enthusiasts to learn more !! Have a happy and succeeded installing, if you follow my given steps !! :-D

overall great series - however you make an absolute critical error and promote that through your "advice". You MUST have a machine specific Service Manual, guessing and "same-as" stuff is dangerous - ie piston ring placement - 100% incorrect for other machines, you must have a manual and follow it. No excuses these days, all online.
@DeanSegovis
@DeanSegovis 9 жыл бұрын
Oden Eaters That piston ring placement is from the factory Honda CB750 manual (hard copy) and I quote "Space piston ring gaps of all three rings 120 degrees apart and then install the piston into the cylinder". I don't know where you get the idea that this is wrong. Perhaps for "other machines" but hey, this is a Honda CB750 last time I looked.
@odeneaters779
@odeneaters779 9 жыл бұрын
you are correct - I just wanted to emphasize that everyone needs a service manual, see far too many tubes of "DIY hipster rebuilds" that suggest it's all the same. Seeing a lot more local ads for "project bikes" these days, DIY'r basically made a bike into a pile of parts that "just need to be assembled", YT is partially to blame IMHO. Thanks for the show, again just wanted to emphasize the need for the correct reference information before starting out.
@DeanSegovis
@DeanSegovis 9 жыл бұрын
Oden Eaters Agree. Way too many bikes out there getting trashed by someone doing a "build" on a running bike. How about you just make it run first and ride it? Yes a factory manual is essential! Cheers, and thanks for watching. :)
