I live in Minnesota and have been on a few flights landing in a snowstorm like that. The pilots are always very skilled and I’ve yet to experience a bad landing in the snow. I think they concentrate harder then, unlike the 747 pilots on the first segment. We were on an L-1011 that must have gone around 5 times to get it right in a near whiteout. You couldn’t tell if you were on the ground or in the air. The snow was thick and you couldn’t see a thing out the window. When we finally broke through for the final approach we had some minimal visibility at about 200 feet. It was an impressive job.

meh. Sometimes when I'm landing my A380 on a snowy driveway I won't even bother to lower the spinny-underneath-bits. If the snow is deep enough I just set her down straight into it, belly first. It saves wear-and-tear on the tyres and it's like sinking down into a feather duvet with my favourite Bangkok ladyboy. There's nothing like that feeling after a long flight.

Who knows? could have chopped power a tiny bit early.
@spiff1003
@spiff1003 Жыл бұрын
@@jhill4071 if you chop power, you will loose speed and land even harder. Accelerating will help on the landing itself, but that goes against the point of landing in the first place. The correct thing to do is to lift the nose a few degrees so the descent rate is reduced. When to do that varies from plane to plane, as lifting the nose also lowers the airspeed and can result in a hard landing if you do it too early.

Pilots are actually told to stick it hard in a crosswind landing to dissipate some energy and prevent the drifting off the runway. Likewise in a snowstorm, you want to stick it good to turn that energy into heat. Usually you don't want to have a buttery landing in snow, as it doesn't help your stopping ability.

I know it's hard to judge distances on video but the F-22 seemed to be performing that steep takeoff quite close to the crowd. It was my understanding that after Ramstein much longer distances are required.

In the UK, CAP403 government standard requires minimum separation of 230 metres between the crowd line and the display line, extended to 450 metres for aircraft operating in excess of 300 knots, or reduced to 150 metres for helicopters and light aircraft. It would be very hard to estimate the distance between the F-22 and the crowd.

I wish they were still building the F22. I’m no expert on military aviation but I would rather my tax dollars go to that plane than the F 35 based solely on the fact that the F-22 is just so much cooler that the F-35. That a good enough reason isn’t it?
@gort8203
@gort8203 Жыл бұрын
No, that is not a good enough reason at all. You asked.

Anyone who doesn't know... A flare is the use of ground effect. A wing (aerofoil) creates lift by being curved on top, straight on the bottom. A longer air path results in lower pressure on top, high on bottom. This causes a higher pressure on the bottom dissipating below the wing into the surrounding air. When that wing gets close to the ground (or water) that high pressure is compressed by that ground causing increase lift. You can often see birds flying wingtips to the water, that's ground effect making it easier to fly.
@gort8203
@gort8203 Жыл бұрын
Flare is not the use of ground effect, flare is what the pilot does with pitch attitude to decrease sink rate and airspeed prior to touchdown. Ground effect may happen during flare, but it is not flare. A wing need not be flat on the bottom to create lift. Most of the wings seen on this channel have some curve on both top and bottom.
@brianw612
@brianw612 Жыл бұрын
But after the pilot pulls back, that ground effect is keeping that plane flying slower than if it were in the same configuration but higher. Ground effect does reduce stall speed.@@gort8203

@@hb1338 That also has nothin to do with ground effect.
@gort8203
@gort8203 Жыл бұрын
And while we're at it, ground effect is not due to compression of the air under the wing into some kind of cushion. It is due to the fact the flow around the wing must necessarily have less vertical component as the wing nears the ground. There is less upwash ahead of the wing and less downwash behind the wing. The reduction in trailing vortices reduces the induced drag of the wing, which behaves as though it has a higher aspect ratio. The wing produces more lift and less drag at the same the angle of attack it held before entering ground effect. That is why aircraft tend to sink and decelerate more slowly in ground effect. That's a simplification, but nowhere near as simplistic as the common 'cushion of air' story.

With the Raptor, it is ironic that the old bi-planes were slow and manuverable, fighter jets transitioned into faster and less manuverable, and then digressed into "slow" and manuverable. Is in tight dog fighting even a thing with BVR technology? Thanks for the insight on aviation, love the channel.

All the fan boys rave about how their favourite aircraft can turn on a sixpence and win any dogfight, whilst forgetting that aviation combat is no longer fought that way. The F-35 is not very manoeuvrable, but its' radars and weaponry mean that it is likely to win almost any encounter in which it engages.

(And the first video, the hard landing of the 744 cargo……How extensive of an inspection (or replacement?) or parts is done for something like that? It seems something would have to be examined closely by a microscope or similar to check the metal skin and the parts that took heavy hits on that landing?
