This is a very rare DL-3422 intelligent alphanumeric display: it seems to only have been produced for a couple of years in the early 1980s and there is no information about it on the internet.
This is not a 16-segment display: it's a 22-segment display, possibly the only one ever created. The extra segments are used to show lowercase letters: the DL-3422 has an 7-bit ASCII decoder and full uppercase and lowercase character sets.
I found it in a box full of other displays at a surplus store, I have no idea if they can be bought anywhere else. I scanned the datasheet from a book and posted it online, because if it's not on the internet, it can't be true! www.msarnoff.org/datasheets/DL...
Here's a closeup photo of the characters:

If anyone has more information about this mysterious part, I'd love to hear it!

Well, *NOW* Googling "22 segment display" comes up with this video as the primary result! Thanks for the video, you rock!

Fascinating. Thanks for posting! I picked up a handful of these at a local electronics swap meet (TRW swap meet) and mine are DEFINITELY different: The majority of upper and lowercase characters are the same, but the capital "B" you have has an extra segment on (the dangling down on the left top one), my "V" is angled the other direction (towards the left instead of right), the lowercase "f" isn't using the descender segments (and is thus taller than the "e"), the lowercase "t" is not using the descenders either, and "v", "x", and "y" don't have that extra blip. And the "v" is also slanted in the other direction (left). And the "w" isn't slanted on mine. I wonder if you got a prototype or early version of it, which makes it even MORE interesting! The datasheet seems to describe my version of it.

Thank you for the video. I used to work for Litronix/Siemens and then for HP for over 3 decades designing test systems for testing LED displays. Inorganic LED displays were at the forefront of digital displays, but soon taken over by LCD...but, Organic LED is now making inroad into LCD. It seems that soon LED will reign again, in information displays and lighting.

Yep, as somebody already commented, now googling for 22 segs gives your link. You rock. However, I would mention that there is no bug (with the stressed chars), but a sync issue. If you run the video frame by frame, you will see that the diacritic apostrophes disappear in a couple of frames (and they also appear on "a", "e", etc). I had this issue with a 16-seg about 5-6 years ago, where a parasitic diagonal line was occasionally blinking, regardless of the char it was showing. The real reason the 22 segs didn't "catch" was the fact that immediately after their apparition, the 35-segs dot matrix controllers became available for very cheap prices. (Edit: here, designing LCD displays and controllers for industrial use, hardware and firmware, since 1998).

Excellent demonstration. The extra segment makes it look more sci-fi, like those alien languages in Star Wars and other space movies.

I was inspired by this video and started a project to make a 22 segment display with LEDs and an Arduino, EEPROM and several shift registers. I think it will be cool the whole thing uses an 86 3mm LEDs. When I finish it will show a video response

You could get a 1 or 2 line, 16 or more character LCD display that could do a lot more, and for not much difference in cost. And it would be visible in direct sunlight. I don't know if they had back lighting back then. I have the DL 2416 displays, that's what I was looking for.

@@HiatusDueToBlueMinhCartoon Yeah, he said so! The v, x, and y all have that extra segment (it’s the same segment).

I got around trying the DL-3422, the characters does show according to datasheets. You can try to lower the VDD to around 3.5V to see if the characters show. One display I bought did not like working at 5V (missing chars). It was OK at 3.5V. Got the PD2816 data. Thanks again Tom .

thanks for sharing the info of this display and also importantly the datasheets. I did manage to find some in the local store ! I will buy some and try if the "bugs" are there. BTW, do you have Siemens PD2816 data? This is an 8 digit with underline . Thanks Tom

Very cool! I can imagine better (cheaper) display technology was emerging in that time period, maybe that's why it had such a short life?

Do you still have the datasheet for the DL-3422? The link in the description is broken.

You said "ASC values over the Data bus", can you please elaborate? I just got an old HDSP-6508 and I'm having a hard time to understand how I'm supposed to send data without controlling each segment individually. Can you advise?
@AureliusR
@AureliusR 3 жыл бұрын
I hope you figured it out.Those 6508 displays do NOT do any decoding for you. You have to individually drive each segment, from what I can see in the datasheet.
@richfiles
@richfiles 3 жыл бұрын
He said ASCII. The parts he has have a built in decoder chip. The pins of the part communicate with the decoder, and the decoder drives the LEDs. The parts you have do not feature a decoder. You must multiplex your part using segment anodes, and digit cathodes.
