3 жыл бұрын

In this episode, Little Wars TV revisits the Battle of Berlin 75 years later. Our special guest for this event is historian David Glantz, author of "When Titans Clashed" and more than a dozen other books on World War II and the Eastern Front. Colonel Glantz describes the enormity Soviet operation to take Berlin, along with the desperate German defensive strategy. After a fascinating historical discussion, six players fight a wargame on a 8'x4' tabletop using GHQ Miniatures. Who will win the race for the Reichstag? Can the German defenders hold out in the Zoo flak tower? Let's find out!
Our guest host for this wargame is Aaron from Project Wargaming. He built the entire table and 3D printed all the buildings seen in the game! In the coming weeks we'll have more videos with Aaron, as well as David Glantz. We want to thank them both for joining us in this fantastic series of videos focusing on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Berlin. If you enjoy the show and want to see us play more famous battles from military history, hit that SUBSCRIBE button!
And to visit Aaron on his channel, go check out his awesome work at projectwargaming.com/

Very interesting! I was aware of Konev and Zhukov "racing" to be the first to, and to take, Berlin, but I had never heard they went to the extent of intentionally firing on each other. As I've gotten older, I have gravitated towards larger figures, as they are easier to see; however, the beautiful board provides an example of why to stick with the smaller scales. Great job!

Mr. Glantz mentioned the use of searchlights in ground operations to fight at night in broad light. But as far as I remember, it didn't work out every time. I've read about some attacks supported by searchlights that were conducted to punch through the Oder valley. It was very foggy and the searchlights had two effects: 1. The Russian soldiers couldn't see anything and 2. The German soldiers saw the silhouettes of each and every Russian soldier. As I've read, it was a turkey shoot.

Last weekend I went to Berlin and walked this battlefield. It is well worth the visit as the Soviet war memorial is amazing. It feels like a long walk from the Brandenburg Gate to the Victory column via the Reich/Bundestag. Berlin has many long straight wide boulevards and it is not hard to imagine the bitter fighting. Also, the blue church is still there as a ruin, and here and there are reminders of the battles with shrapnel and bullet scars.

Can't believe you guys got David Glantz to do a custom history brief for the wargame. Glantz is like gospel for history buffs, his works on the Second World War are some of the most accurate accounts of the war, dispelling many of the ideas popularized after the war when the nazi generals were interviewed. I own several of his books, and they're awesome reads.
