76-Year-Old Credits Instagram for Selling $1 Million Artwork

The power of social media made Scott Kahn’s paintings go from less than $5,000 to over $1 million. It’s something he never expected to happen at the age of 76. For decades his work went unnoticed. He credits his recent success to another artist, Matthew Wong. “He bought a painting of mine. And he put it on his Instagram feed. And that's what triggered this enormous interest in my work,” he told CBS News.

As a starving artist myself this made me cry, and really hits close to home. It's so sad that a human can be SO TALENTED, so unique, and yet can't sell their amazing work. I am so glad this dude got what he finally deserved before his time is up. Just amazingly detailed paintings, truly awesome. I would love to have one in my house. Life and the real world is very very difficult, and the older I get, the more I realize money is the most difficult thing to attain (IF it wasn't just handed down to you from your family or just got lucky) WHO knows....

Art supplies cost $$$. At least his work required a lot of effort, time and details. Unlike lazy modern art or abstract.

As someone said, the cost of art supplies, plus the demand of the art and as they said at the end, he couldn’t keep up with it. Also, some paintings can take months to complete.

Yep I'm an artist, I quit doing it years ago because I have to live and pay bills. Must be nice... I sold my first artwork in kindergarten, everyone wanted me to keep at it, and I did until I turned 18 and moved out and realized I needed to make real money, artwork is so time consuming and time verses money didn't equal out.

Matthew Wong was also an amazing artist. For anyone who hasn't seen his stuff I highly recommend looking it up. Unfortunately he committed (sui)cide in 2019. RIP Matthew

I got interested in why his work got interested by someone’s else instagram so I looked it up. “Matthew Wong was a Canadian artist. Self-taught as a painter, Wong received critical acclaim for his work before his death in 2019 at the age of 35. Roberta Smith, co-chief art critic at The New York Times, has praised Wong as "one of the most talented painters of his generation." Wikipedia”

He reminds me of Van Gogh, but glad he got a huge break that he can see for himself unlike VVG. Just proves nothing is too late with the help of social media and that social media is not always destructive.
