Review of the very budget friendly (around 150.- usd) 7ARTISANS 60mm macro, that i used during 1 year, before buying my new Laowa 65mm Ultra Macro 3 months ago.
So i am testing it on my R7, with photos samples, in my favorite wild field in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, The Philippines.
For this review i did not use any extension tube or other magnifier.
i am talking about the specs, the pros, and the cons.
There is a little comparison with the 7ART and the Laowa, showing photos with both lenses with and without my 31mm of extension tubes.

Fix: When I say gasquet, I mean mount. This lens has no gasquet... 😀

Thanks for the review. I've had this lens just 2 days now and I'm having fun with it on my Sony a6000. It's my first true macro lens (1:1 magnification). The build quality is excellent and it seems very sharp. The focus ring is very smooth and precise but not easy to focus near infinity as you said. I'm using a DIY flash diffuser I built for it and the results are amazing. Regarding the lens cap other reviewers also don't like it but I actually prefer these slip-on caps over the pinch style caps. I have some vintage Yashica lenses from ~ 1980 which also have these caps so it's not an unusual lens cap style. It's much easier to remove and attach than the pinch type in my opinion. Great photos. I hope I can get some even half as good.

Thank you so much for your comment Patrick! It sounds like you are geared and ready for macro. That lens is all you need, and 30mm of cheap extension tubes can bring you very close to 2/1 if you need it in the future. Of course you will get the same kind of photos than me, in macro you can get results kind of quickly. I must say that there is also a bit of luck involved. The more magnification, the more luck you need, haha! But keep in mind that some photos that you saw in the video are cropped. And with the 33 mega pixels of my R7, i can probably crop a bit more than with a A6000. Good luck 😀

@@Chrispitchwildlife The depth of field is so shallow with these macro lenses even at f11, I was wondering if you ever use focus stacking. Have you tried it? Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

@patrickmckeag3215 I think with Sony you can try F16 or more, and try to find that sweet spot between quality and DOF. But here is my video on Focus stacking. I am certainly not the best at it, but it will give you an idea to start with. Look at other people videos. I dont really like focus stacking because its really time consuming. But sometimes a 2 or 3 stacks can help. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nclzmM-WuJy6iaM.html Here another of my newest video as well: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/att7rNh8tODVgYk.html Here another guide from another youtuber who do very good stacks: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNiKmMhjztWvdo0.html One more thing, if you saw my video about focus stacking: I am using more the method C now. It render the background better with less artefact. Goid luck! 🙂

Are most of the images you took in this video taken with the extension tubes fitted, or just the lens itself? Fantastic video thankyou

Olá Chris Diga-me essa versão é 1 ou a 2? Adoro as 7artisans Tenho a 35mm 1.2 para sony e acho fenomenal. Mas queria adquirir uma macro, mas dizem que a segunda tem algumas melhorias. Obrigado

Hi Dani, in my video I show the version 1. 👍 I think the image quality is pretty much the same on both versions. The mark 2 is 50$us more expensive, more recent and smaller with internal focusing. Here is a nice short video that I found: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oshlZZCfyq_ap5c.htmlsi=3Ud-rnuPd6yUkYxt Cheers! 😄

Thanks Chris. I can get a used one but version 1 in good condition for around $90 and I think I'll give it a try. I really like manual lenses, and we have manual lenses on the market with good value for money, to spend on our hobby. 😉😉

@@danibastos1 correction Dani, I do not have the version 1, I have the mark 2. But the version 1 is good as well. I would go for smaller and lighter though. My personal choice... Good luck Dani!

DANI! look at the price of a new 7attisans mark 1 before you buy your used one. It should be pretty close to 100$us! And the mark 2 around 150$us.

Mr. Chris, is that possible to use this lense on a canon eos r6 with out using the apsc function? thank you in advance.
@Chrispitchwildlife
@Chrispitchwildlife 18 күн бұрын
Hello Carnes! This lens is made for aps-c. I don't own any full frame like the R6, but technically it would fit, and "I guess" you will have a strong vignetting. So it's up to you to crop in post or to use crop mode to remove the dark circle. But don't forget to change in the menu the option: shoot without lens. Cheers! 🙂👍

Hi I am a beginner in Macro photography. i am using Fuji x mount. Which lens do u suggest for me Laowa 65mm or any other cheap lens ? Please help.
@Chrispitchwildlife
@Chrispitchwildlife 2 ай бұрын
The Laowa is all you need, light weight, small, sharp, nice focus ring, and go to 2x magnification. The 7artisans is 3 times cheaper, and good for a beginner. It go to 1x magnification. But also very sharp in the middle of the image. I can not tell you about other lenses. I just have those 2. And I use only my Laowa. Did u watch my video about the Laowa that I made 1 year ago?

Thank you for your comment! 😀 It was a long time ago and on an Asian online shop... Look for Meike extension tube for RF mount (or whatever mount you use). Mine was a combo of 18mm + 13mm. Try Amazon or eBay. Good luck! 🙂

@@Chrispitchwildlife Thank you! I use Fujifilm. I bought Meike 60mm Macro lense and it is almost the same as the 7artisans 60mm , so the Meike ones should fit even better.

Alright, I shot macro with X-T5 since 2 months , I love it! I saw a few Meike ones for Fuji X mounts on Amazon. Keep in mind that you will lose a bit of light and a bit of working distance. You will lose infinity focus. The all process will be more shaky as well. 😁 But you get a lot more magnification. Good luck! 😀

If you have a full frame, you should buy a Laowa for full frame (I think there is an 85 a 100 and maybe others... , but do not buy any of the 2 lenses of my review! And be careful also about the mount. You have to buy a Laowa with a RF mount for EOS R. I know some people who bought the wrong one.

I think there is also a Laowa 60mm and 90mm for full frame... 😄

To summarise, you should check all the laowa full frames, 100mm, 85mm, 60mm and 90mm. Check that they are for full frame, and have the mount that can fit your camera. Cheers! 🙂👍
