June 2023 found out about this cartridge - Mossberg Patriot was reviewed well so I bought that and a Burris Veracity PH. The rifle couldn't group well so in February I sent it to Mossberg. New barrel (no charge) - now I get .6" groups and ring the 8" gong at 500 yards every time. Couldn't be happier!

I also bought a Mossberg just to find out if the 7mm prc was as good as it sounded, and it is! Put a radial muzzle brake on it and it shoots really light, loud but I take my hearing protection with me anyway.

I know this is old but I thought I’d throw this out. I bought the least expensive 7 PRC I could find. A Mosberg Patriot. It shot so well I went and bought a second one for my son. 65 grain H4831SC. Tuned that load to .25 w 175 Berger. 2nd Rifle like RL 22 64.5 grains. Also .25 moa. Best $425 I’ve ever spent. Twice. It’s cold out. I’m getting 2915fps out of both loads. 24 inch barrels w EC Tuner brakes. Thanks Eric Cortina! I usually do a seating depth test then tune that in w the tuner.

It really does look like the best of the 3 PRC but I already bought a 6.5PRC and have very little need for it here in the midwest. I'm looking at building a .375 Raptor or 8.6BLK ,Ar10 and Rem700 for large game right now. Both use .308/6.5Creed brass and .338 or .375 bullets to shoot sub or supersonic. Uses existing mags and boltcarriers/bolt faces just a barrel swap. 7MM PRC will be looking really good out west if it takes off, and brass is everywhere in a year or 3. Right now its about finding and using existing supplies for me.

Nice review Gavin. BTW, at 01:46 you mentioned the 30-06 is slightly shorter, but that is also 3.340" so with a bolt face change it will fit those actions too. I would love to hear a side by side comparison of this to the 7 LRM or the 7 SAUM when not constrained to SAAMI throats.
@jamesmooney5348

Slightly longer then 30-06??? -is what you meant to say? This 7mm prc is going to be bigger then the 6.5 craze. Well, I think so anyway.

I’m hoping this bad boy takes off like mad. It’s hard to find .30 Cal projectiles because of the 300 prc craze so this will take the edge off and make the 230 grainers more plentiful. On a side note, I’m more inclined to look at the 7 prc then the other two. It’s just an interesting cartridge with some stellar ballistics. Keep up the great vids. Love the technical stuff you present.

Most practical would be something in 22 inch integrally suppressed barrel (suppressed but no can sticking out), with a folding stock... it would make a rifle that fits into bagpack. Probably 7-5lbs when fully equipped and loaded. Shooting either 180 eldm, 190 berger hybrid or 195 berger hunting pill. Out of 22, 195 should definitely be able to push in mid to high 2800s. Lapua brass and temp stable powder.

I noticed you’re a buy the book kind of guy, but I only use a magnum primers in the winter time. If I shoot in the summertime, you should try a regular large rifle primer. I use them in my big 300 ultra mag with 245 grain bullets and they’re way more consistent than the magnum primers.

I would most be interested in the 195 Extreme Outer Limits (EOL) bullets as I had sitting in my shop a 7mm Practical (out of New Zealand based on a 300WM case necked down to 7mm). The 195 is heavy for caliber and the long and ultra long range target shooting that I want to do will use that pill to its extreme... Given what you have already shown of the cartridge, I may scrap the 7mm Practical and go straight to the 7mm PRC!
@SaneAsylum
@SaneAsylum Жыл бұрын
Cartridge design for hunting should start with understanding bullet design. Hunting bullets are designed to expand from 1800fps-3000fps (some claim slower or faster few reliably deliver). The longer the bullet the more potential for penetration it has (SD). The higher the BC the flatter it will fly thus extending your range. So you should look at a bullet like the Berger 195 grain EOL Hunter bullet as long for caliber with a high SD and BC, get a twist to stabilize it and load for a muzzle velocity around 3000fps (faster and you risk it blowing up on close up shots, slower and you lose effective range). That does the most that can be done with what we have available to us. The 7 PRC fills that niche nicely, with some room to grow. The 6.5 PRC does it pretty nicely too in a "short" action. It however is too long for many short actions to see the best performance since it needs 3".

Since it’s the same case but shorter a 300 prc necked down to 7mm wildcat would be awesome. My big gripe with the 300 prc is that those 230-250 bullets are just a bit slow in them but they would make screamers out of the heaviest 7’s like that a tip

Nice vid (as is all of your content). I'm curious, if loading for 7MM PRC specifically and you had a 24 and a 20 inch barrel (or were considering cutting the 24" down to 20") would you tend to want a faster burning powder for the shorter barrel? for instance, H1000 or Retumbo for the 24 inch and something like H4531 or 4831SC for the shorter barrel? or even 4350?

I would love to see how it does with the lighter bullets 140 grain range. I think the super flat shooting 140 out of 7 mm would be fine for me for what I would be using it for. I don't really need to have heavier bullets for longer rain or game larger than deer. What is your opinion of the Bergara in 7 mm PRC I may be looking at getting that rifle. Thank you 👍

Great video as always Gavin. other than Hornady providing brass to yourself and other select high profile KZfaqrs, this brass is unubtanium. Just like the other Hornady boutique rounds introduced lately, it is just another boutique round "designed around a long for caliber bullet" and "long range blah blah blah" that really doesn't do anything half a dozen other widely available rounds won't do. It's cute and gives my favorite creators more content opportunity, but until Hornady puts some serious support behind it, and gets other ammo manufacturers to support it, it might as well not exist.

Here we are, a year or so later. I'm seeing a fair amount of factory 7PRC 175 ELD-X Precision Hunter and 180 ELD-M ammunition on the store shelves, plus Hornady Brass, Peterson Brass and ADG brass. In fact, I just received 6 boxes of 175 ELD-X from Midway. I already have Magnum primers and powder, so things are looking better now than a year ago thankfully. Most of the factory rifles on the shelves in 7PRC are sold out though. Hopefully, more hit the shelves this late spring as they are apparently in hot demand.

Just got a Bergara Premiere Pro HMR in 7 PRC, bought 3 boxes of Hornady 180 ELDM Match ammo to break it in with & so I would have some cases to reload. About 26 rounds of factory through it, seeing pressure signs on the cases & the groups are around 1 MOA at 100 yards. Not impressed to say the least. I have cleaned, annealed & loaded 7 rounds with 180 gr ELDM's with 63 gr of H4831SC, CCI 250 primers & COAL of 3.3500. I hope this shows some improvement.

6.5prc, 280Aai, 7mmprc? I'm leaning toward the .284's. I have to ask for a new rifle where I actually prefer weight and barrel length and I hand load so ammunition availability is not a concern as long as I can buy brass. Is 7 mm PRC going to be that much better then 280AI both with a 1 in 8 twist barrel. I'm looking at the Browning x-bolt long-range or Western Hunter long-range both right about $1100. Both 24 or 26" barrel. I'm hoping stock they've planned on this handling a 195 grain Berger but I'm going to be focusing around the 175 to 180gr bullet weight I'm just wondering if the hype around the seven PRC is going to be superior to the 280 Ackley giving that they're both going to be running the same twist. It for a target North American medium to large game rifle. I thought about the 300 my concern is recoil. I was looking at the 6.5 PRC but inside 500-600m I think he's larger diameter heavy your bullets will just be. Honestly I don't know would love the advice

As a duel purpose rifle standpoint. Wouldn’t the 8.5 twist make it more versatile with whitetail bullet weights, 140-160 where the 7 mag has entrenched itself for so many years? Just for pure long range, I’d agree that the 8 twist and high bc’s would rule, but I honestly see that losing favor to the 6.5 prc if deer size game is the primary interest.

It's accounting for chamber pressure for each bullet. The 180 ELD-M is just a few feet slower than the 175 ELD-X. But, when it comes to the CX the bullet causes a higher pressure, so it's loaded with less powder for the same speed to maintain the same pressures.

Seems everyone is covering the PRC line up. While the longer profile of the projectile has good BC. Doesn't that increase surface area drag inside the barrel and down range? And doesn't a longer bullet have the tendency to be more prone to side winds? With approximately 300 fps separation between the 6.5,7mm, and 300. A shorter projectile would benefit all of them.
@cheatinggravity173
@cheatinggravity173 Жыл бұрын
You would think so- it sounds counterintuitive- but alas, the longer bullet with higher ballistic coefficient is affected by the wind less. Im not smart enough to explain why. There is a range at which fast time of flight and light bullets vs long time of flight and high bc favors lighter bullets for the same cartridge. Now that said, a longer bullet with the same weight (lead vs copper) will have a lower b.c. because the sectioal density is less, and it will be blown by a sidewind more than the shorter bullet becaue if the larger surface area.

@@cheatinggravity173 I could see that being the case at over 1800 fps. Above that the nose of the projectile creates a sonic wave that deters friction until it slows down. The rear bevel reduces drag on the projectile at all speeds. I also understand that a lighter bullet will drop less because of a few reasons. But air direction and deflection would effect the side to side trajectory. Not as much above a certain fps. But gradually over its entire flight path. A longer projectile would also hold in more of the chamber pressure in the barrel, but you also have more friction on the acceleration down the barrel. It's a horse a PC no matter how you look at it I guess. My point is that we can already achieve these same results with the already popular .30 calibers. Plenty more of them available! .308,3006,300, and 338. Why create more tooling and manufacturing when you can already do it with what you already have.?!!!

Oh snap! Let's have your parts list on both of your 7mm PRC builds. I wanna be a copy-cat. How about that X10 press from frankford? We would love an update if you have one.

@@ja0298 yeah but it's a hunting cartridge not a paper puncher. 1000 rounds will definitely last some years it the average year has a couple dozen rounds down the tube

@@cademarti1365 100% agree with you, for most it won’t be a issue. But for those that do shoot more than average deer season though it is something to keep in mind. I look at the 7 PRC as an updated 7mm rem mag. No belt, better case design, better chamber design (essentially a match chamber) and designed for efficiency. I think that for the majority of the hunters, who may not take advantage of the 28 nosler’s extra speed and energy transfer, the 7 prc is a better fit.

The big question: what new edge does it offer over cartridges with similar powder capacity?
@ja0298
@ja0298 Жыл бұрын
From the podcasts I’ve listen to on the PRC line, they essentially gave it a match chamber from the start. That and not having a belt.

I had one in 7 still have one in 300 RUM . Personally I think you have the better hunting round. 7PRC components are going to be hard to come by. Just my 2 cents

@@paulmeek7964 Hey Paul, when you had your 7mm RUM. Was there any specific round/load that you found that gave you consistent accuracy. I have only one box of 20 round of the Remington 140gr. now. So going to have to reload them in the future.
