Converting your room into a minimalist bedroom doesn't mean sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor. It means you reduce distractions so you can optimize rest and calm.

It's hard, society is totally geared to make us buy things. We try really hard to teach our 6 year old daughter to be as minimal with her possessions as possible, she usually only asks for one or two things for Christmas, but other well meaning family members always go overboard 🙄. She is also being taught the difference between wants and needs, but it's a very conscious and constant effort from our side.

If you live in a tiny apartment with other people so you only have your bedroom, you can still do some of this with the zoning of your room. Do all of these things for the specific part of your room that your bed is in. If your room is your whole space, put your bed in a corner so you can zone more easily. Then create your "sleep zone", "work/study zone", and then your "relaxation zone" where you do fun and relaxing activities. Yes, you can do this in a TINY ROOM! Minimalism helps with zoning because you dont have too much crammed in each zone

1. Clarify the purpose of the room in your mind (the purpose of every room is to accomplish something for us). The bedroom is there for rest and intimacy. --what items don't contribute that? 2. Relocate things that don't belong in the bedroom. (Old boxes, books on your nightstands, weights, computer) 3. Begin by clearing the floors (look in visible areas: boxes, clothes, toys..) 4. Clear surfaces (countertops, dressers, shelves). What has collected there: decorations, coins, receipts, keys..).order them. 5. Decide how you're going to use your storage spaces: e.g. this drawer is for this, that shelf is for that (assign items to destinations). 6. Pare down the decorations in your bedroom (reduce; throw out things that don't need to be there or mean anything). E.g. get rid of some shelves with nothing meaningful on it. 7. Pare down furniture: it frees up space. After you've got rid of clothes and items, then you will need less storage and can get rid of it. 8. Consider how you're using the space under the bed (doesn't need to be empty, but not full of junk and dust).

$eller$: “Ooo it’s a season, let’s get them to spend some $$$$$$$.” It’s stuff or inventory to take care of and rebuy at least 4 times a year. We don’t need decor inside to know what the season is. Hope fully you have doors and windows that give clues! Holidays are the same. Even if you love decorating for a particular holiday no need to rebuy it every year.

I’m a single parent. I don’t have a bedroom. I live in a 2 bedroom apt but gave the bedrooms to my kids. I just sleep on a comfy couch and have a desk. I created an area for myself in what used to be the dining room and put a room divider up. I got rid of the dining room table and chairs because we never used it. We just sit at the bar to eat. I keep my clothes in the closet in the bigger bedroom. That’s it. I just don’t really own anything myself.

I had moved back to the US for a bit, and without credit and having bought a reasonable car for cash, I was in hog heaven. I wound up making a list of must haves for me, and the largest bunch of stuff was the kitchen because really when it's all boiled down, are we not in "the business of eating" after all? It is freeing to know that without all that stuff, I wonder if you sit there sometimes and just relish all of the time you have with your kids. Good for you. They will always love that if not now, eventually. My kids are grown, and they loved the time with us.

We have enlarged them & framed them and display them throughout our home as they bring us deep joy . We are very intentional about living a purposeful, low stress , high joy life and have long been committed to keeping our bedroom a sanctuary for rest and intimacy . We are blessed with large windows that often gift us a special view of visitors such as the many deer that stop by our farmyard which we really love . Thank you for sharing another video of fantastic & meaningful content . Continued blessings to you and your family . 🌷🌺🌷

Thank you. I'm so happy I found your videos over a year ago. One helpful thing I did before I tackled the bedroom was to have my empty boxes ready plus 2 clothes baskets and every empty hanger ready to go. And a box of trash bags. Reason? To deal with it "now" and not just tuck it in another room to decide later. That's how our bedroom got messy and cluttered in the first place. As I uncluttered other rooms anything I wasn't sure about got stacked in the bedroom for "later" of course "later" never came. The task is easier with everything in place. As each box was filled, I sealed and took it strait to the car to drop off at goodwill. Do not stack the boxes in another room. I promise you'll never miss it. Trophies my husband had was the hardest to part with so I lined them up on table and took a picture of my husband with the trophies. It hangs on the wall and looks nice. Much more enjoyable. I smile each time I walk past it.

Hi Joshua. Sue calling from the uk. Just to say I love your videos. As an older person, I wasn't sure about minimalism and wondered if it was just a trend. But it makes so much sense in our troubled, stressful world. But your videos are so lovely to watch - you aren't shouting at me from the screen and everything you say is put across in a thoughtful and easy to process way. Thankyou.

Our bedroom is large and 3 years ago we purchased a beautiful custom made cherry bedroom set for our 41st wedding anniversary. The only thing that doesn’t contribute visually to a calm relaxing space is a 7’ cat tree in one corner. But we have 3 cats and that’s where they hang out because it’s next to the sliding glass door looking into the backyard and it’s under a heating vent which they love. So we have to compromise so the cats can also feel relaxed and happy in there also 😸

Living in an efficiency apartment ("bed-sitter" for those in the U.K.!) that's smaller than a hotel room my bedroom, office and library are all in one space. What I can do is keep the bed neatly made with nothing on it so as to have a peaceful area in the room. Sometimes, though I do put papers on the bed as I don't have a regular desk. Joshua, I want to add to your comments about having the floor cleared. Not only do I believe in having as little as possible touching the floor because such an arrangement looks good but it's a good safety practice. I want to encourage people to have nothing between you and the windows and doors so that you can get out however you need to in an emergency. If there's something by the window maybe that item can be on rollers so it can easily be moved to the side but nothing at all there is best. Also a reminder: no thing or object in your house is worth dying for. Too I want to also encourage people to familiarize yourself with your surroundings so you can get out quickly. Best of all: being so familiar with a floor plan that you can get out in complete darkness. Not exaclty decor but having flashlights with fresh batteries near at hand should be part of the household. Too when you remove something that has been with your or around you for a big part of your life, you are still you. You are not diminished as a human being. If anything you may be enriched and added to by the removal.

I love your perspective on items in a room needing to contribute to the purpose of the room. THAT made a lot of sense! I needed to hear that. For example, if you go to a car lot, you find things that pertain to the purpose of a car lot--cars! Not crafts, woodworking tools, etc. Your way of explaining this has certainly spoken to my heart. Thank you! We recently had a huge change where our office is now our nephew’s bedroom. Our apartment, though spacious enough, there’s not another place for our desk/office supplies so I’m creating a corner of the bedroom office nook. I know it will be hard to segment the room for work and rest (feel like I’m back in college!) but still trying to create a calm space in one half and functional office in the other 😂 We are looking forward to purchasing our first home hopefully next year where we can spread out, but this event has us more conscientious of what little space we have. Downsizing/decluttering and organizing feels so good creating order out of the chaos!

A note from an old Lady (me, I'm 65). Our Grandparents (or Great Grandparents) either lived through the Great Depression, or were at the tail end of it. That was a time where EVERYTHING was saved and reused (some how). That mind set was taught to our Parents just by being in the family (and companies capitalized on it - a great marketing ploy). That next generation was taught to save everything, the generation also had the ability to buy new. When my Mother was alive our Family had a running joke about her utility room. She still saved everything, even broken things, and we'd tease her that the broken things weren't going to fix themselves. After she passed my Brothers and I did throw away the broken things she saved and laughed one last time. We did however have a hard time getting rid of mementos (and a lot of that was saved). That was emotional saving. Now I look at my Children (and Grandchildren) and realize I've taught them to emotionally save things - like my ski boots because of the fun memories. They don't fit me, and (at 65) I'm probably not going to go skiing. Today those dusty old things went in the trash. If I ever get a wild hair to go skiing again, I'll buy new ski boots!

I love this! In 2008 my husband and I each got new dressers. I tended to have a lot more clothes so I got a huge 9 drawer dresser and he got a three drawer that was about half the size. In all fairness we had a huge walk-in closet that had shelves for his other clothes which is why he opted for the smaller dresser. When he passed away I moved into a condo and I both dressers in my bedroom. The big one is MASSIVE and takes up an entire wall, so about a month ago I decided to get rid of it. When it's gone I know I'm going to have a ton of space. I've already envisioned what it's going to look like but I love these tips as well. Thanks Joshua!

I’ve been working on this very concept for some time. I think of it as a storage plan in our home and storing things where we use them. I keep a room-by-room list of every drawer, cabinet, closet, shelf, floor space, wall space and tabletop or flat surface - with the contents assigned there. It’s certainly made me more aware, Each decluttering round has me releasing more stuff. As more goes - more items become more visible. 🔲One day I hope to clear out some furniture. My 9 drawer dresser has empty drawers. 🔲One of my goals is to not store anything on the floor of closets, under beds or sitting on the floor in general. I want to vacuum these spaces with no need to move things.

Cool video. I've started decluttering by going through the kitchen and removed half of our crockery, a set of cutlery and over half our Tupperware. Feels so much better, next step to clear out the bedroom though I will have a challenge to rehome some sentimental items :D

Our bedroom, I feel, is calm and inviting. We have various textured cushions on the bed and a soft throw. A lamp each & a Buddha either side of the lamps. I feel the Buddhas promote calmness for me. I also have 3 smaller ones. I’ve tried to keep everything chilled in there 😁

I have been on the minimalist journey for a few years. I noticed that as we declutter, my anxiety and my children's anxiety decreases. They also have an easier time concentrating.

When I first moved to my place I am at now, the cable company hung up my tv across from my bed but needed to put the wifi and all the wires under my bed. Every thing controlling my computers, tv was all under me while I slept. When I took a look at all those wise I had them moved to the living room and wow, I slept better, I felt better. It is good to clear wifi out of your bedroom too if you can.

I'm getting there. Interestingly enough, I have been working on my own journey of minalmism , my daughter who lives at home ( spec needs adult ) wants no part although she gave some stuff away ....You're not kidding, I decluttered my bureaus things I had on them for years like old fashioned perfume bottles ,,, a music box my grandmother gave me ...I put a lot of special things in my China cabinet im keeping. The rest went in boxes in our walk on closet or my closet...Oh my goodness....Such a sense of calm .

I'm experimenting with different things ....Yes !! When I do my family room over , I'm only going to have a television , a couch , and one wooden vintage chair that my neighbor gave to me which is beautiful embroidery. I decluttered so many things under my bed , I have only two clothes boxes, seasonal ect ....

We use a kallax ikea unit for most of our clothes I find it very helpful to section clothes. We went down to one wardrobe (we don't have walking wardrobes in the UK) 100% more space!!

Yes indeed! I do not have anything under my bed.It makes cleaning a breeze. For me,minimalism is a journey and a real eye opener as one transitions through different eras of his life.I discovered a book about minimalism by Dominique moreau I think, when I was eighteen.i do not remember its name, but I immediately signed up for it in my head.I decluttered too much, too fast, not knowing exactly why at the time.I do not regret anything. I am almost 36 now and I have understood so much about myself and am still learning everyday. Minimalism is intentionality and what it means to each one is deeply personal and different. There are no rules. This is one of the best things I ve ever done for myself. When I fall into the "more is better" or "I need it now" trap", I feel it.I get stressed out and impatient.I do not beat myself up.I do make my list of my wants,I even budjet, but then I pause for a few days.Usually, I naturally come up with alternatives and cross off lots of items or things to do off this list. For me,the cursor is how I feel. Minimalism is not a magic pill,it is a philosophy to be adapted to one's soul. Thanks for your videos,I like watching them and I like the simple and direct delivery of it.
