That cuddly fact is one of my favorite parts of owning a conure. I have a female sun named Suzaku and she LOVES to cuddle. She loves to get right up against the neck and settle in, clucking and chattering, with kisses tossed in. She also picked up tricks really darn fast. They are a lot smarter than I could have imagined

My sun conure is just over 3. I got her as a hatchling. To say she’s sassy is an understatement. We love to dance and sing and shower. Every day she is cuddled into my neck while I work. One big problem- she randomly bites me severely. I mean blood, blood blisters and bruises. From what I’ve read she’s hormonal and/or fear biting but it happens regularly. For example, I cannot move laundry out of the washer. She will actually fly from wherever she is in the house and bite my neck! Her vet suggested a hormone shot. I hate the idea of giving her a shot, rather than behavior modifying.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kay, Honestly, I seldom disagree with vet advice but that sounds a bit extreme. Most hormonal issues can be solved with diet, managing sleep, set up and training. There is also the possibility that as you say it's fear related or that the trigger is subtle and not noticed! My partner Sophie has a good video on hormones on her channel! That would be worth watching! We also regularly do consults regarding hormones with clients, so that's something you could consider if you're really struggling and need one on one advice!

My Conure made me subscribe ❤, I was told “ he” was a boy but every sign points to “ her” being female. Anytime Shrek is around women “she” gets aggressive and quite chatty but around men “she” is more affectionate and friendly, I am a male and this bird has taken me for its partner , best wishes for the holiday season and I have to say that I have subscribed as well. Best regards as always from Lloyd. ( and Shrek).
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher Жыл бұрын
Thank you to Shrek for making you sub lol! Regarding male/female preferences in conures that doesn't always indicate gender in them! It can sometimes be down to the individual bird or how they were reared/weaned! You can also see intense "hate" from birds because of mistreatment from a certain gender in the past (one of our rescues took lots of work to get to like me!) It's awesome that they are strongly bonded to you and get on really well with you! I have some videos on conures if you'd like to learn more, but conures are definitely one of the tougher parrot species to identify gender in without DNA testing or checking when they are little!

We might be adopting a baby conure. In regards to them being cuddly and bonding closely with their humans, how do they deal with separation in times of holidays away from home etc?
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Karolina, They like attention and they like company. This means that if you do go away you'll need to make sure they have both while you're not there. It's best to see them like dogs - they need a sitter. You can mitigate this slightly by having a pair of them, but if you've put in the bonding/training work they will still miss you.
@macintoshimann9892
@macintoshimann9892 2 жыл бұрын
Ill second the response you already got! I think if it’s possible, look for somebody that would be a good sitter. We used my grandmother who had some experience with parrots. Eventually the parrot learned the routine and new we’d be back. Hed usually want to cuddle for as many days as we were gone but he didnt seem upset. Alternatively, if your able to travel with the cage, Ive gone from Pennsylvania to Tennessee with the same parrot and he loved traveling! I would definitely recommend a trial trip before you try this tho!

Hey Frank, Many people have cats and birds in the same household without issue. The fact you plan to have them separate is already awesome. They can co-exist in the same household but the issues usually arise when the parrots are out and the cats are about. It has lead to some major horror stories. Provided you keep them separate and try to ensure the cats don't jump up on the conures cages it shouldn't be an issue.

I'm new to owning Conures. I have two black capped conures that are going through their first molt, and are displaying some rather aggressive behavior. They have their own cage but are free to roam until bedtime While they're molting, should they be spending more time in their cage and separated from my other birds? I also have Cockatiels & budgies. Our Male Conure Grover has been getting bitey and snapping at our Cockatiels. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated! Love your video's by the way. I've learned so much from you and your flock 😊
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kakelia, Thank you for the kind comment! Regarding their behaviour it can be irritating during moulting. Feathers get itchy, skin gets irritated and they can be moody. Have you seen my help with moulting video? That may have some tips on easing it a little bit! Conures can be notoriously nippy at the best of times, but it can be a little worse during moulting. It could also potentially be the beginnings of hormonal behaviour depending on your set up and flock dynamic. I wouldn't say they should be in less as they still need the time out and to burn off any excess energy. But, making sure they don't hurt the other parrots is important too. Do you target train at all? It could be worth working on soft targeting with them to help them learn to moderate their bite force. I'd also look at diet, cage set up and other factors to see if there's anything there that can help!

The parrot teacher! I have a big question.. I'm currently buying all the necessities for my soon to be pet Conure bird! The person I'm trying to buy it off keeps saying that all the cages I've found are no good to a small / medium sized parrot like a Conure bird. He is insisting I buy a 50cmx50cmx70cm cage of him with 1.5cm gap spacings. In the situation I'm in, I understand he is the professional, but after all the research I've done I feel like I'm getting scammed because I thought that cage would be to small with too big gap spacings? The cages I've found are 65cmx65cmx80cm with 1.3cm gap spacings. I would rather put my trust into you because you are someone I look up to. So where am I going wrong? Or am I being scammed..? (both cages are stainless steel)

Hey there, So 1.5 is the biggest you can use for a conure so that’s ok, although 1.3 would be better! Regarding the cage you’re being recommended it does sound too small. If you take the Libertas we use (look at my cockatiel cage video for dimensions) the one you want sounds better as it’s bigger. It’s possible he just wants you to buy a cage from him.

Hey Lexii, Some people do have 2 cages for their parrots, a daytime cage and a sleeper cage. It works for some birds, but not for others, it really depends on the individual parrot! Personally I feel it can be a little disruptive to have two, as they don't have a clear "this is my bedroom/safe space" BUT I can definitely see how it works for some people and their situations. Regarding the biting, it's really common for conures to do that, especially younger ones or rescues. Olive is still exactly the same, so we don't allow her to cuddle on the neck or hair at the moment. Scampi and Pickles are completely fine however and routinely love to cuddle. Generally the tips for neck biting are the same as in my videos unless there are any special circumstances. It'd be using redirection, not reacting (difficult I know!), training an incompatible behaviour when she gets bitey, not allowing her there!

Currently considering adopting this cute little pineapple named Ramey. I work at a pet store and a woman had to part with him because she worked from home and apparently she was getting in trouble for him chattering in the background (but he doesn't seem particularly noisy tbh?). He's really cute and cuddles so much with me and every time I pass his cage he hops into my shoulder and just wants to snuggle... I'm just a bit nervous because I'm staying with my parents until my condo gets fixed from a fire; currently my sennie Papaya is staying here too. She won't go after my dad's cockatiel, Nanners, so that's not really what I'm worried about (and I'm already aware of keeping them separate). I'm more worried my family might become upset about me bringing home another bird. Unfortunately, they're not very understanding people and we butt heads about everything under the sun. But I'll be moving back out from this temporary stay to go back to college in January (my own place, not a college dorm). I'll have plenty of time to spend playing with both birds, I'm just concerned about my family's reaction for a bird temporarily in the house (they're older so they really don't like change). Anyone have any advice on how I should approach the subject to them? Little Ramey has been searching for a person to love him for several years now, and has been in and out of shelters and new homes and he's been really cuddly to me.

Hey there, Sadly that's one thing I can't offer much advise on. I usually approach such situations with honesty. It's tough if it isn't your own place, so you could be diplomatic. Conures are awesome but don't forget while he may be awesome in the store he may take more effort/training at home, especially with other parrots about. If you're prepared for that then that's half the battle won!

@@TheParrotTeacher I introduced my dad to him at the store, and he thought he was super cute. I also partially introduced Papaya (my Sennie) to him and they seemed to not hate each other (will obviously monitor closely and not let them too close) so that's a win. I have a lot of experience caring for birds from raptors to parrots of all shapes and sizes, and I've got all the training tools and resources ready to go for him. He's so cuddly and friendly with everyone and I know he'll help me with cuddle breaks in between studying. :)

Can i ask why my conure squeak sometimes when he's sleeping or trying to sleep? I'm worried of my conure everyday to the point i can't sleep comfortably (and im a beginner too;;)

Hey there, Conures can squeak and squeel when they are relaxing or getting ready to rest! If he isn't showing any other signs of distress I wouldn't worry! If you haven't watched my other conure videos it might be worth taking a peek if you're a beginner!

I’d love a conure some day, but I live in an apartment, and the vocalizations are too loud. They’re so cute and sweet tho. So I will live vicariously through you and Sophie, and enjoy my parrotlet and budgie.

I believe pineapple green cheeks are much more quite than their louder counterparts and suitable for apartments.

Legit never heard of a conure before August. Met my little guy by fate the day he got put out on the floor. We "dated" in the store for a month before I brought home. He's a cat with wings unless it comes to training. Cats with the tweets, dogs with the treats. Not to mention how much more portable lol. But I had to leave a bad review for the store and the breeder because he's defective. He only knows how to moan and quack. So, cats with the tweets, dogs with the treats, ducks with the meets 😆

My Josie is a green cheek and she is rehomed I have had her now for 4 years and she is 8years old now going by what the former owner said from the time we got her. I handle her quite a bit she is very lovable bird and she goes everywhere with me, even church..lol.. she has started what looks like suckling on my hand/finger, toys. she is hormonal right now and use to regurgitate or what looks like feeding. she would feed my shirt, carpet my ears.. I and my husband would stop her with giving her a toy and play with her and this year it seems like she isn't feeding everything as much but suckling or licking. should I be worried?! I had other bird owners say she is just showing affection by licking.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lisa, It isn't an uncommon hormonal behaviour. We don't see it much in our conures, but they do like to lick and "taste" everything. I would just manage the hormones and provided she isn't making any obvious gestures just let her do it!
