Hey Nick,what's the rest of the vocal chain you're using? The preamp and compressor used makes all the difference with a dynamic mic.

Thank you Sweetwater for doing this video… came at just the right time for us. Will be making a few purchases … likely the Samson… already own one of the Samson and it is truly amazing for the price compared to many other brands.

Shure and Sennheiser were my preferences, they were different but they each had their strengths that were pleasing! Excellent mic comparison!!

I just love comparison videos. They are soooooo helpful and really can help save money by buying the right one. Wished I would have watched some before purchasing my cymbal pack lol. I am not a singer, definitely not a singer. My buddy thinks he is though so which one of these would help me prove to him he ain't, probably any right. That being said I like the audio-technica the best. Please keep these kinds of videos coming

You missed the most important things for those mics, which are all meant to be live vocal mics: handle noise and how feedback prone they are individually. Also, to really compare them you should have disclaimed more about the preamp gain settings. Did you gain them so they were matching each others input level or did you just set each one so it doesn't clip with a little headroom? They all sound just pretty normal like anyone imagines a live mic. Good enough designed pop filters for live, but nothing special. Freqency response pretty similar, except the Rode, which sounded noticably harsher and almost like it was clipping on one line you sang. Also, you didn't demo the On/Off switch on the one mic, is it silent or will it pop and click in the signal?

For Nick's voice, I liked the Sennheiser, the Audix and the Rode. The Shure just works for most anyone.

that was very cool. the variety of preferences in the comments is also cool. IMO, the samson and sennheiser did not agree with nick's voice. there was a harsh metallic flavor on the top of the loudest passages. the rest sounded pretty close to each other, but for nick's voice i would choose the AT or the E-V 2nd for richness and smoothness. (listening through DCM time windows and mission speakers which are both very detailed and clean). I think another valuable shootout would be to set up like for a real gig and have a feedback+handling noise shootout. i eventually got an E-V ND767 a while back because it is smooth and quiet. but i will also keep looking for something even smoother and quieter. some mics are screamers/noisy to handle and some mics are harsh sounding.

I guess I just have a thing for that Senheiser sound. It works great for group vocals, you don’t get that low-mid frequency build up that’s common with other mics if you are using about 10 mics at the same time.

I thinks it's a shootout between the SMf8 and the Beyer. The rest sound fairly similar at the mp3 area of comparison. I'd like to hear a comparison including some of the lower cost Behringer mics which except for handling noise sound good when mounted on mic stands.

For me, Electro-Voice and Samson were the best. I’ve been using Beta 58 and recently bought Beta 58 A which I haven’t test it against 58. I will soon. Too bad wasn’t included in the video. Years ago I tested the SM58 side by side to the Beta 58 and my choice was and still is the Beta 58 !!!!

I agree. I also chose a Beta 58 as my microphone. Unfortunately at $160 it doesn't meet the criteria for this video,

My top three favorites in this video are the Audio-Technica, Sennheiser and the Rode. AKG also makes a budget-friendly dynamic that sounds great.

Order of preference: 1. Samson 2. Shure 3. Sennheiser The Samson and Shure sound like they have nearly identical sound qualities. The Sennheiser sounds very crisp, and has a very pleasing tonal response, but sounds like it has almost a midrange “scoop”… which depending on the vocal / instrument can either be really good or really bad. But it’s a nice sounding mic. Thank you again for doing this comparison since it’s rare to ever hear mics up against each other in a mix and then solo. One of Sweetwater’s better vids (which is saying something since Sweetwater always puts out great gear vids… and is a great company overall for equipment)

I think that for recording ones singing the Q2U is better than the ROde m1 which many think is better than Shure sm58. I have the Samson and the Rode.

Workhorse or not, it just goes to show how muddy the SM58 sounds compared to a lot of dynamic mics today. The Audix OM2 and Rode M1 sound incredible. The Beyerdynamic TG V50d pleasantly surprised me.

I've found a lot of the vocal dynamics in this price range have a pretty hyped character. I think there's a reason for this, though. When I'm just plugging a mic into a powered speaker for rehearsals or coffee shops I use an e835 because it has a tailored sound out of the box. When I'm doing actually mixing FOH with a full PA, I use e935s because of their flatter, more neutral sound that I can EQ to taste. I don't find the e835 to take EQ particularly well. The SM58 sounds kind of muddy on its own but it does take EQ very well, probably why it's still so popular.

I'm showing my age,but "back in the day" I was a high school and college intern at King Records Studios in Cincinnati. Bud Hobgood (James Brown's producer) ,wouldn't allow James to use any of the Neumann's because he kept destroying the diaphragms. Most of the James Brown hits recorded at King were done with a Shure SM58 and a UA preamp.

@Stefano Pavone Screaming at ridiculously high volumes,not backing off the mics to leave a little "air" between himself and the mics. This was before "pop" filters came into heavy use. He was just as aggressive in the studio as he was live. Hobgood said he measured some of Brown's screams at 140DB! I don't know if he was exaggerating or if he was serious. I read somewhere that the late,great Luciano Pavarotti could get that loud also. Hobgood would always put a limiter between the preamp and the board.

Wow that’s really cool to know about James Brown’s recording process..!! Would you happen to know how many microphones they used for the drums? Thanks 🙏.
@NURREDIN
@NURREDIN 8 ай бұрын
@@adrianlyord5300 Yes! he used two AKG C414s( the old black ones) overhead in omni, two Shure SM57s on the snare(top and bottom,I don't know why) and an Electro Voice RE-20 on the bass drum. The drummer was always behind "gobos" so there was no "bleed through" to the other instruments. There was very little "overdubbing" done. If someone made a mistake,they started over until everybody got it right. I have no idea if he used any EQ because I was the "tape ape" and not allowed to touch the console! All of the outboard equipment at the time was UA.

@@adrianlyord5300 You're more than welcome. I play mostly guitar and bass. I have to assume that Bud put the mic under the snare to catch whatever sounds that metal thing on the bottom of the snare (don't know what it's called) made. His snares always had a "pop" to them,so maybe that is why.

The Sennheiser and Rode seemed to stand out to me. Electro Voice was also pretty good. Shure SM58 is overrated. All of the mics picked up some plosives, but I guess that's to be expected when singing loudly and right up close. Edit: listening a second time, I think I actually like the Electro Voice best. Pretty natural, smooth, and clear, with minimal plosives.
