I personally asked Eddie Kramer in the year of our lord 1991 at a symposium Sponsored by Gand Music ( Chicago north shore ) at the purple Hyatt " Why are the Yamaha NS10 Monitors the 'industry standard' my interest being that I was using these in my home studio for monitoring, I continued " when they sound so bad?" His response was . " if you can make them sound good " then your mix will sound good on any speaker "

Mitch, you always put together great videos. You wave your hands around like my Italian Aunts. That’s fine. The important thing is your presentation and speaking are outstanding and could not be improved. Thanks for putting all these great videos together. It’s great, given the sea of horrible videos on KZfaq, to have nicely done videos.

Very nice overview. What DAC do you recomend for the Yamaha HS series?
@sweetwater
@sweetwater 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! It really depends. We carry tons of different DACs that all offer quite a bit of different functionality. Here are some questions you may want to consider when looking into different DACs... 1. Are you going to need ADC (analog to digital conversion) as well? If so, how many inputs are you going to need? 2. What kind of conversion quality are you going for? Is this going to be for hi-fi listening, are you going to be mixing, or are you going to be just producing with the monitors? 3. Are you going to be running a sub with this system, as well? If so, are you going to want to have a separate output for that sub? These are just a few questions that are worth considering before purchasing a new DAC. Feel free to give me a call if you want to dig a bit further into what might be the best fit for you! Nick Pasquino, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 3230, nick_pasquino@sweetwater.com

The Yamahas Hs' series don't sound even nearly to the Yamaha Ns10m Our next Monitor will be the Focal evo or Genelec 8020. Just for music playback instead of the KrK. And Yamaha ns10m for mixing, get yourself a pair! It translate so pure and perfect to all different devices !!
@wheelheart

They don't need to sound like the old Ns10, thats the point. Todays modern music requires different speakers for monitoring specially in the low end. Ns10 is great but for most home studios for modern music, ns10 is not ideal at all. U can use them but you have much better options. In Good condition Ns10 also not cheap...
@WMCMUSIC

@@wheelheart I've never said that they need to sound the same. They're selling the H' series like it's the "new" NS10. I had the H'series and have the NS10, I speak about facts, when I say they don't sound nearly the same. But it's like a marketing strategy, because it's cheaper and the NS10 aren't made anymore!

With the Yamaha hs7, is it advisable to purchase a single monitor now and then purchase the other down the line? Or will I run into phase issues?
@sweetwater
@sweetwater 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Mos! You likely won't have any type of phasing issue if you purchase one now, and one down the road. But, for any type of mixing purposes, I would certainly advise to purchase 2 right away. Otherwise, you aren't going to be able to do any type of full stereo mixing. You'll have to either run everything in mono, or just receive one side of your mix (left or right). But, for any purpose beside mixing, no you won't have any issues with purchasing just one monitor now, and one later. I hope this helps! Ive heard all of those and owned some of them except the ilouds. The best studio monitors for under 500 which surprisingly are not here are the KRK RP7G4s. Infinitely better than the previous gen and better than all the monitors in this video in my opinion. My least favorite were the tannoy gold 8s I owned. That tulip horn was just way too direct and extremely bright at the top end of the treble. I think tannoy should have just left them as a farfield home audio speaker. I owned the jbls. The kalis and jbls have a similar sound do to using the same tweeter and both have a strange top end response with a huge dip at the crucial 10khz range. Never loved the jbls. I listened to the mackie mrs at the store, all 3 sizes and actually owned the xrs. MRs were kinda disappointing. Didnt like my xrs, sloppy sounding aluminum tweeter. Presonus eris were pretty good. They dont seem to do much wrong but are not super exciting. I prefer the older eris over the eris xt. Eris would be my second choice after the rp7g4s. Most people I believe would prefer the yamahas and adams on this list. Yamahas have the mid boost people like and adams have the most detailed tweeter on this list. To me theyre ok. Yamahas lack bass and the aluminum tweeter is mediocre and can be headache inducing. The adams are ok as well. The amt tweeter doesnt blend well with the woofer for me.

Very professionally scripted as usual. Bravo! One major suggestion: mention single driver speakers...if you're audience is who you think it is, they most likely don't fully understand why single driver speakers exist. The problem is that all these speakers have crossovers around 2kHz...mixing for the masses takes more effort than mixing in single driver speakers.

I'm sorry but just no on the KRK's. I used the 8" version for about three years and I didn't realize how insanely boomy and boxy they sound until I upgraded to proper monitors. IMO having an AMT tweeter for $500 is amazing value and I've heard really good things about the Kali monitors.

How was your room treatment? What size speakers and what were your room dimensions? I've had good AND bad experiences with many brands of monitors, KRK included, and in almost every case of poor performance, the room was the dominant factor
@shoey6123
@shoey6123 2 жыл бұрын
@@mgmg116 tbf it wasn't great treatment but a pair of HS5's in the same room sounded worlds better. While some of that boxiness in particular came from the room the KRK's didn't help. Out of interest a bit ago I did a Sonarworks measurement for them to see what they sound like in an optimal scenario and I was not impressed with the results. +12db at around 100-120hz while my mains get around +3-4 at worst. KRK does at least look like it's going in the right direction with the g4 line but I'd presonally wait a generation before I'd trust them.
@mgmg116
@mgmg116 2 жыл бұрын
@@shoey6123 If a pair of 5" drivers sounded better, and a pair of 8" drivers were pushing that much low end buildup in the room, then that's your fault for using far too large a driver in a room that doesn't have the dimensions to justify the driver size. That 100-120Hz buildup you're describing is caused by standing waves, where the wavelength is so long that it doesn't have time to dissipate before it hits the far wall, and so the energy gets trapped in problem areas of the room and just builds up exponentially. There's not a single KRK model whose frequency response denotes a 12dB boost in the low end, so it is clear from what you're telling me that this was caused by two factors; 1. Your room is way too small, hence the buildup of standing waves 2. Your monitors weren't nearly far enough away from the closest wall - in a home studio in which you're using monitors with 8" drivers, you ideally want the monitors no closer to the nearest wall than a meter to a meter and a half. Any closer, and standing waves form between that wall and the monitors and you get even more buildup. Just a small room size shouldn't be enough to generate a full +12dB boost in the low end, possibly 6-8dB at best, but placing them too close to the nearest wall would certainly make up the other 4-6dB. Myself, I've been in properly-designed and treated studios that used KRK's before and while I wouldn't say their performance blew me away, I could definitely see them being used effectively and they certainly wouldn't have been a handicap to a skilled engineer.
@shoey6123
@shoey6123 2 жыл бұрын
@@mgmg116 I don't think this argument works given the price range the KRK's aim for. Almost nobody buying Rokit 5's is going to have proper acoustic treatment and so I more focused on the usability in a bad environment. also when I tested the KRK's at flat that was in a properly treated room and I still got a large 100hz spike and boxy low end. I think it's down to the porting but I could very well be wrong. Also thanks for assuming my conditions were bad so your ragument makes sense. I'm, just a name on a screen, it's not worth four paragraphs so respons to me.
@mgmg116
@mgmg116 2 жыл бұрын
@@shoey6123 I didn't make ANY assumptions about your conditions, you TOLD me in your first reply that your room was untreated. And KRK makes studio monitors, and everyone knows studio monitors don't perform as advertised unless they're in treated rooms. This is not only common knowledge, but common sense. The underlying assumption is that if an engineer considers themselves professional enough to upgrade from headphones to monitors, then they're also serious enough about audio quality to invest in treatment. It makes no sense to market a set of monitors that are intended to work without room treatment, because rooms can be so vastly different that there's no suitable average to target within design specitications - therefore, monitor manufacturers, even KRK, MUST assume the best-case scenario, and therefore assume the engineer who purchases their equipment is going to pursue room treatment, which is something the design CAN prepare for, to a degree. Also, if you know what you're doing, room treatment can be done very cheaply. I made a few absorption panels myself, and the total cost per panel was something like $30 after taxes. All you need is some mineral wool, a few sheets of fabric, and some 2x4s to act as a frame. Very easy, there's probably 100 KZfaq guides on how to build these at home. Also, I don't need to know every specification of your studio to know your acoustics are causing your issues. Regardless of the bass porting, you can very quickly obtain the frequency response curve of these monitors from a quick Google search, and there's absolutely nothing in these response graphs (from KRK themselves) nor in my experience, that would indicate a natural 12dB boost between 100Hz amd 120Hz - this would be ridiculous. Therefore, the low-end buildup is caused by external factors, standing waves being by far the most likely culprit. Or you're making it up and there isn't actually a 12dB boost? I've been mixing for 15 years, and I've been around many studios, and not a single one carrying KRK monitors has ever had such an issue, at least none of the properly-treated environments.
