Discipline may be the most important thing in poker. I’m not very good at the game but the last time I played I really focused on staying disciplined. I was playing with four other guys from work, none of whom are very good either. I wasn’t catching any cards and my stack slowly dwindled early throughout the game. I outlasted the first two players and was in 3rd place out of the three remaining players. But I stayed disciplined and was folding when I was supposed to and eventually started making some hands. I outlasted the next player to fall and was heads up but down in chips at least 2:1, may have even been closer to 3:1. I was able to grind my way back and win the game. I was lucky to start getting some cards, but if I had made bad calls/raises early in the game I never would have been in a position to win later on.

If you're card dead then you should mix in a bluff here and there so that way you can catch your opponents off guard and you may win a mid or a big pot sometimes.

Number 3 literally happened to me 2 hours ago. I have pocket jacks so I 3-bet and the flop was A K 6 rainbow with 2 players. I check and the guy bets 3x the blind and I call. Turn comes 9 and he c-bets. I folded, since I believed it was a pretty bad for me all in all.

So, question from a not so good player: I feel like with the first two examples that betting is a form of pot control. In the middle pair example, I feel like I'd bet often thinking, for one, that it shows strength and could scare off some hands, but then also, I'm worried about if I check and the person makes an oversized bet with a possibly worse hand or a high drawing hand like KQ in the first example then I'm in a really tough position. But if i bet, I'm often getting called and maybe improve my hand on the turn, etc. and I have thus controlled the pot by betting. What do you say about that?
@Piglover1221
@Piglover1221 4 ай бұрын
Just listen to the advice check/call fold if you get a bet against you !! You need too stick around for the flush and straight draws middle pair can only turn into trips or two pair at most !! Which is still very un likely to happen
@maulrat588
@maulrat588 6 ай бұрын
Nine way, with preflop raise callers, middle pair is almost always dead. Check or fold. Calling only if heads up. Maybe. Also it takes a lot of experience in seeing thousands of hands to react the same way to AA as you do to 2,5. Practice looking at the cards, sliding them in front of your stack, and leaving them there until the hand is over. The same exact movement every time.

when you say you dominate the low stakes games, how low are we talking? i will play 5-10$ tables and when i raise pre-flop with ace/queen people in those games people have no problem calling . and then i raise after the flop to show my aggression. then i continue to show my aggresssion like you say and im just left with ace high after the river and just end up losing to a pair or folding that ace and losing those chips.

Very common. Biggest leak I see is going on "winners tilt", i.e. playing too many hands, calling with mediocre hands, etc. after you win a couple big pots. I used to have that for a long time until I fixed. You could also be card dead too, or just whiff a bunch of flops. Usually that's when it's time to wrap it up and call it a session, before you give all your winnings back.

You should literally play the exact same way. If you're deeper, then you can play more aggressively preflop and post flop bc other players will want to put in their stack with less and less hands, but the amount that you're up or down shouldn't dictate how you play whatsoever

But not all fish are the same I don't like how Nathan groups all fish as if there all the same. There's fit or fold who are bluffable and calling stations who will call triples with bottom pair and if you have 20 hands on that fish you have no clue that they'll call you with. In the particular example we can still win at showdown and bluffing on that runout is probably going to be -EV the fish is going to have worse missed draws that we can win against. If you have 8 high by all means you can bluff you're not winning at showdown anyway and the fish might fold because the flush came in if he's fit or fold. If he's a calling station you don't even bet the flop, turn and river.

You dickheads, poker should never be a career, it’s a pastime like a hobby, I play here in Australia, we gamble about two flys, our official game is two up, and I play several pub games a week, I don’t care for winning motza money because I’m f Inacially secure but I’ve won many more nightly tournaments than you wish you were here, entry usually $20, end up winning 2-3 hundred a night , win some loose some, I see the same players at different venues across Sydney Aus. Make the same predictable by the book moves, never bluff never straddle, and yet again all the young buck say come play the casino. I don’t need that thrill, just happy to play socially, but then again you do come across Aholes, so I do lift to the challenge to break them into bankruptcy, , so snow flakes will never win because gambling is a risk, you morons all have turtle shells on your backs, so as far as I’m concerned, pull your heads in, TONY H
