Nagarathpet is supposedly the first and oldest food street in Bangalore. A small narrow road that starts near SP road goers on for more that a kilometer, intersecting Avenue road. Some of the oldest and best food stalls/street food carts can be found here. Since it is mainly a market area, it will be crowded always, with incessant honking and erratic vehicular movement. Though it is not organised, the food or snacks you get here is unparalleled. From the multiple options available around, we visited the following eight food spots in Nagarathpete:
1. Rama Vilas aka GUndappa Hotel - Their Dumroot, Mixture and Hirakai Bajji are must haves. Go before 5 PM, otherwise Dumroot and Bajjis will get over.
2. Lakshmi Prasanna Bakery - The best bun butter jam, one can get in Bangalore. The buns are horizontally sliced into half and filled with pineapple jam and butter. A delight.
3. Raju Tasty Vada Pav - Visit this place for a Mumbai style Vada Pav, the Vadapavs here get as close to the one that we get in Mumbai.
4. Indian Coffee Day - For a lip-smacking Fafda Jalebi treat, this is the place. The pickled/fried chilli that comes with Fafda will increase the heat and spice quotient.
5. Bhagvat Kichiya/Masala Papad - A different take on masala pappad with the pappads, roasted on hot coal embers. The toppings and garnish on this roasted pappad are the highlights and this is the most healthiest street food, one can get.
6. Badam Milk - You will find a few Badam milk stalls on the road, in this entire stretch. Light but flavourful, is a good alternative to tea/coffee during in the middle of a tiring shopping.
7. Annapurna Chats - Rajasthani Kadi Kachori is the signature snack here. With multiple snacks and condiments like Kachori, Palak Pakoda, Kadi and sauces, this will be a treat for your taste buds.
8. Raju Sweets and Chats Corner - Wrap up your meal with a yummy Dahi Vada and a decadent Gulab Jamun with ice cream at this 40 years old hole in the wall eatery.
Tips:
1. Go on a weekday, the crowd will be less.
2. Take an auto or get down at Cubbonpet and walk from Avenue road to Nagarathpete.
