I really like how Volition is portrayed in Elysium. For most visual novels, this trait is often overlooked because common sense either flies out the window or is the key to victory. Here it's shown to be like a shitty superpower. In the description, it's described as a party pooper and it's only cool for Sane People. In Harry's context as an alchoholic suicidal, it's almost as if it would *hold him back* from exercising his superstar cop abilities. And everyone else who is saner seems to not solve cases as well as you. But look at Volition! It's always there. Mingling with the other voices. Not subjugating but helping soothe them, interpret for them and reading them for you. Volition will call out your other voices when they get too afraid or instinctual. That voice was with Harry even when he was high and drunk and crazy. It's the real superpower that helped him stay alive through heartbreak and all the traumatic crime he witnessed. I also really like how Volition isn't written as ultra-competent either. He's like a very understanding and compassionate brother. But his words always have a tinge of Harry's own self-deprecation as well. He never really gives absolute positives unless he's very sure of it. He's realistic but not sociopathically logical. He's... sober. I love the writing on this guy so much. He's such a good embodiment of how you might dismiss or look at your own very real emotional and logical fortitude when you're ill or want to be ill.

Volition did feel like a stick in the mud at the start. But at the end, I respected "him" a hell of a lot. Some of his lines gave me hope, in-game and even out. I wouldn't want Harry's fragmented mind, but I almost wish my own "volition" would speak to me like his does in critical moments.

"sociopathically logical" isn't a thing for a lot of reasons.
@ArkayeCh6 ай бұрын
@@Handles-Are-A-Stupid-Idea I'm reading your comment with some reach. I meant that as in archetypal logic that's written with zero emotional consideration. The cold calculating logic type. But real life logic is very emotional and good logic must be very aware of how important emotions are and it positively as well as negatively affects things.

I also want to share a moment I had with Volition: Electrochemistry: You have to find some drugs, yesterday they just got you but the effects are fading away slowly, don't you just wonder how did you manage to get up at 7.30? @@AtomicBlastPony The Deserter is basically the opposite Harry should be: hung up on the past, extreme among extremists, hateful, and high as fuck from bug fumes. Try to see yourself outside of the unconfortable situation you are currently experiencing, and imagine yourself consoling a friend that is experiencing your exact situation, then write the thoughts, the conversation, that you would have to reassure your friend hat everything is ok and that in the end he would be ok. Then read the text you wrote. Volition is inside all of us, the world is very complex and complicated, and existed even before we where here, with our dreams and desires, so we are going to be dissapointed many times in our lives, but we are strong, and even though all around us we see strangers, we are not alone, and we can do this, god speed.

What is so unique about volition is that it is the one skill that will always be on your side. This is shown by the interaction with Oranje Dancer, where he tells you the others are compromised. All other skills can be depressive, impulsive or both, but Volition truly just wants you to be your best you.
@Dreamfillah9 ай бұрын
What makes the Oranje Disco Dancer scene even more brilliant, is that Volition overcorrects in its unadulterated devotion to you -- it wants to punish her for trying to manipulate you, even if Volition itself doesn't realise it.

@@DreamfillahYeah, I see a lot of people who talk about Volition in this scene who to me miss the deeper subtext- Volition is on your side, you’ve been wronged by pretty women, it reacts with extreme vitriol to being tricked by another pretty face- even though looking at it logically Klaasje was doing her best to save her own skin, and not manipulating you in an especially cruel way… while she did lie to you, Harry’s own feelings did most of the work, and so Volition majorly over-responds as if *she’s* at fault for not just her own lies, but your internal urge to think of her as perfect, and her failure to live up to that.

I'm a psychologist in training and would like to use these lines as a source of inspiration to reassure patients who struggle through it. The Volition scripts are absolutely on-point regarding a therapeutic journey. It happens so often that people give up, even after doing tremendous work. I remember when in-game, you develop a thought, I think sobriety, and the result is "this is how normal people are". I remember how that hit me like a brick wall. People have the capacity to work through absolute hell, absolute bottom, claw their way up to the surface just to be met with the realization that many others never had to struggle like that in the first place. That this amount of intense pain, dedication and will-power puts others in positions of power. Meanwhile, "all" it did for you was reset you to the normal, default position. And yet, without that sacrifice, you would never leave that dark place. Now, you have opportunities like you would never have had. So, it's just a bit further now. It is possible, because *time* is possible.

Stop arguing with idiots on the internet, you have nothing to prove to them, they will only further bring you down. Stop playing Noita and Rimworld all day, yes its fun I will admit but you aren't going anywhere with this, you can put it down for a couple hours, you can already do that NOW. If you can't do this for you, do this for the people you care about, do it for the world, do it to spite the evil in this world, tap into your inner humanity and get up. You aren't worthless, you are alive aren't you, that is something and value is a subjective measure anyways, to be worthless to the systems that grind your soul into a paste is an incredibly freeing experience, it means you are winning and they are losing even by a small fracture. Let the bourgeois starve, help your fellow working folks, help them see the world you see and keep marching forward, that is all we can do we cannot afford to stand idlily by." Hope it helps.

Do you know what the best part of Voition is? It is with us. With all of us. In the brain of each of us, in a lobe somewhere semantic and scientific, and existing at the same time, is Volition. You may not acknowldge it, or recognize it, bu it is there. Whispering to us, almost like a Guardian Angel, but it is no supernatural, nor otherworldly. It is a part of us, just like a shadow, and just like a shadow, it can never be eradicated nor erased, not even in darkness. We always talk about the devils on our shoulders as a collective and conscious speices and society. I believe it is high time we talked and understood these angels on our shoulders. Because even the most suicidal of us can dream, and even the worst of us have these. Volition.

The music also adds a lot, but sometimes we just need to hear a supporting sentence from another person. Human beings aren't meant to be all on their own. Wether you have friends to support you, or a KZfaq Video with snippets from some video game, both of these things are real. Both of these things can support you. So, as Volition said in this video: Don't give up! You can do this! Remind yourself of this, return to this video as much as you need to. You CAN succeed!

I'm a first generation immigrant from a poor country. The only child of a family with issues connecting emotionally. Completely disconnected from my society of birth due to how much bullying I suffered as a child. A few years ago, I finally managed to make it and became a citizen of a better place. This video was like hearing, for the first time in my life, someone speaking with, at times, the very exact tone; the exact same voice; that has spoken to me for the last however many years that I can remember. The voice that comes to me from the inside. I didn't expect to start bawling over a random video that KZfaq recommended me. I only played a bit of Disco Elysium and realized that it was one of those great games I needed to play properly once I had the time. I hope I can remember a little bit in a few days or weeks how this video made me feel and actually make the time to play the game.

Sometimes you just need to purge to reset your brain. Ain't nothing wrong with that. For max efficiency taking a shower, eating something nice, drinking a cup of tea (if you're into that), or all of them will get your head on right. GL

His dialogue feels like a therapist, challenging your negative perceptions of yourself, not letting you give up on life, praising you when you succeed, even if its in a small way. He's my favourite voice in my head (or Harry's to be exact)!

VOLITION [Medium:Success] - You can do it. To live is to suffer, but it is also love, hope, laughs, overcoming. You can't stop pain, but you can choose how to react to it. Like a hangover, this will also pass. Ride the wave, you will be okay. Trust me. Don't listen to your pain, listen to your heart. Your life has not ended. This is just the beginning.
@derpherp18109 ай бұрын
To be human is to suffer, things get better slowly over time. The bourgeois will fall and we will all be free one way or another, even in the hell they created we can still find beauty in life. We won't let them break us, we are not their thralls, we are humans and they are not.

My favourite quote from disco Elysium is a volition check, “The road to healing is going to be a long one. Stay the course. You will make it, someday. Just remember that you’ve made it this far and it’s just a bit farther now. Let’s finish this. I’m on your side.”

15 seconds in & my Electrochemistry is screaming at me to take something, TAKE ANYTHING, to stop feeling the way I do. When your life is poised to go down the same path as Harry's: you can't help but feel like there's no point to even TRYING anymore. The aspect of Volition's quotes that hurts the most is the fact that they're ALL reminders that there are others out there rooting for you... Regardless of whether or not they CAN help you, other people WANT to help you... And man... I don't care about hurting myself, but people who care about me? Fuck that. I can't keep hurting them by hurting myself... It doesn't matter if you have all the valid reasons in the world to stop trying & stop caring... *There will still be reasons to care.* And you CANNOT ignore that. You can try to drown out that fact with booze & drugs... but you & I both know that you're hurting the people who care about you every time you stop trying. Whether its anorexia, alcoholism, depression or something else entirely: YOU ARE NEITHER ALONE IN YOUR STRUGGLES OR IN YOUR RECOVERY. You are only as alone as you choose to be & if you want to get better IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SEE YOURSELF IMPROVE: You cannot push away those that care & you have to keep caring & trying, for their sake, ESPECIALLY when every fiber of your being is telling you to stop trying. You can get better, you WILL get better. The first step is strengthening that commitment to improvement. You'll never be able to resist the negative forces if your Volition can't bolster your resolve. So save this video to a "Bad Day" playlist like me and let it remind you that: "This too shall pass" & you don't have to have hope for a better future to improve today, you just gotta be sick of allowing the status quo to continue. ✊️ And remember it'll all be worth it once you spin-kick your first racist square in the chest. 😂❤

@Tapahtumahorisontti7 ай бұрын
During those long years when I struggled with trauma, anxiety and depression (and I still do to some extent), I had hoped to find someone that I could love and someone who could love me. It was only recently that I truly realized that there is one such person in my life and that's me. I hadn't extended the same love and compassion to myself that I was so ready to expel outward, to others. After realizing this, my own Volition had "woken up". Sure, I've always had it in me, but I felt like its strength has been somewhat renewed. I'm still a mess and I might always be like that. I may never heal completely, but unless I can love myself, my life will remain miserable. Volition represents healthy self-love that doesn't sugarcoat things, but also doesn't poison them with unnecessary pessimism.

my favorite part about volition, is that sure all the skills are in one way or another a piece of harry so fragmented that it became its own person, but volition Is harry himself and his own motivation, sure its probably detached by 1 or 2 steps of reality from the real him, but its literally by definition his Own Will, and he always has harry's back and best intentions

Volition with low morale be like You are a worthy, perfectly okay individual. Your life literally is as valuable as all the others'. I'm just gonna support you and you're gonna keep coming back, imm'a give you the strength you need, you're gonna keep coming back. Why? Cause you keep taking magnesium! You worthy man destined for great things! You gonna stay on the force until you die. You serve this purpose in life. Your purpose in life is to be on the force cracking tough cases daily. Your purpose in life is to be in that field cracking a case daily. Your life is valuable, you serve a purpose. You should heal yourself, NOW. And give yourself a piece of that oxygen, and ozone layer, that's covered up so that we can breathe inside this pale trapped bubble. Cause what are you here for? To give up? HEAL YOURSELF! I mean that, with a 100%, with a 1000%.
