I was fan of Minardi when Jos verstappen was there. With the slowest car he managed to take an average of 5 cars at the start because they had the only car of the grid without all the electronics. He had to start with pure racing. At the end of the first round he was last again because the car was too slow. And in the rain he was able to take a few also. The problem with Jos is that he didn't have money. That's why he never got a real chance. Good to see he made sure his son did.

Schumacher changed his story several times regarding that race's ending; he also claimed at various point that he'd been trying to engineer a dead heat, something that was thought to be impossible with modern timing equipment. one of my best memories of f1 when i was young was the backflip, also that era of cars early 90s just look amazing, can we mandate simple wings like that again, bet that would reduce the dirty air and how much dirty air affects the car.
@filmandfirearms
@filmandfirearms 3 жыл бұрын
It would also basically eliminate aerodynamic innovation. Those wings were so simple, there wasn't much you could do to improve them by the end of the simple wings. With all the information they have now, every team would be at basically the exact same level in terms of downforce and car performance gaps would be entirely dictated by engine
@GlaucusBlue
@GlaucusBlue 3 жыл бұрын
@@filmandfirearms theres still the rest of the car, but simple from wing would be less affected by dirty air and a simple rear wing would produce less dirty air. Would be better of spending the capped budget on battery and other tech, than just tiny aero details most fans won't notice.
@filmandfirearms
@filmandfirearms 3 жыл бұрын
@@GlaucusBlue The wings are the main thing when it comes to downforce what with ground effect heavily restricted these days. The differences in car pace would be milliseconds, and there wouldn't be any real way to improve the car besides the power. 4:16 what many people don’t know, the river of rain water was actually the sewage of the sinks from the paddock club. Italy - can't remember the precise year. 5 cars within a gnat's crotchet. Peter Gethin won? Monaco '96 - the "Who wants to win this race?" Part, the Second. (I cried when Damon's engine went kaput. I knew that just one win at his Dad's circuit would have been epic for him.) Crazy Canada 2011. Nuff said. Spa '97. Not only the most chaotic start but the most insane middle and determined end - well, it was incredibly wet and if Eddie wanted a one-two, keeping Ralf in his place was the most sensible thing to do. Yet more tears from this Damon girl and Jordan fan (everyone was a Jordan and Minardi fan back then. Why aren't there more Williams, Haas and Alfa Romeo fans now?).

I remembered two more: Hungary 1997 - When Damon Hill would win with an Arrows, just to be stopped by a broken washer worth 50 pence three laps to the end. And yet finished 2nd. Brazil 1993 - The finish was easy, but the mid-race... Senna and Schumacher had 10-second penalties, it starts real raining, Hill, Senna and Schumacher change to rain tyres. But Prost, no... Rain will stop soon... 2 laps running in heavy rain with slicks. Fittipaldi spins and stops in the middle of the track, just to Prost hit his car and put the safety car out of boxes. And again... Damon Hill losing to an unbelievable overtake by Senna, just in the same lap he changed tyres.

How about the 1975 Austrian Grand Prix? Like Brazil '03, it was soaking wet and there were a lot of accidents. The race was halted on lap 29, and as leader Vittorio Brambilla came up to the chequered flag, he spun, hit the wall, and crossed the finish line backwards. Then, while he and his team were celebrating, some of the other teams were preparing to line back up on the grid because they thought the race was going to be restarted! It wasn't, and Brambilla, the oldest driver on the grid at 37, took the only win of his career.

Got into the stand got out of the car, removed his gear and stood next to his team leader Ken Tyrell, to watch the end of the race. He had arrived around 4 minutes earlier than the second one ! Because of his knowledge of the track, and the fact that the weather was foggy.

I don't remember which race it was--definitely in the "wings and aero" era--but I saw footage of one race that ended with three cars coasting toward the line, zigzagging like mad to move fuel into their fuel lines to get the engines moving again. If you could find that and show it I'd love to see it again.
